Tanya has a good point. 37" is a size 4, which is quite small, especially for your height. I have 36" hips but I am much shorter than you so my hips are probably curvier than yours even though they are smaller.

More importantly, if you don't feel comfortable in skinnies (even though I'm sure they'd look great on you), it's really not a big deal. I love how they look on other people but I don't like them on me, so I just don't wear them (with some exceptions), and stick to what I do like instead. Just because you don't like how you look in skinnies doesn't mean you're a failure and there is something wrong with your body. It just means skinnies do not suit you.

I really think you should try a straight leg jean. The ankle-hugging skinny jeans with a 12" or 10" leg are hard to wear for just about everyone. Straight jeans still give the same kind of look but will have a more balancing effect.

Sana, 37" is not much at all. In fact, and I think I have mentioned it, I have VERY similar measurements to yours (25" waist, 37" hips) and I wear skinny jeans all the time, and everyone here says that I look great in them. You can see a lot of my photos in skinnies under the " What I wore today" section.

Besides, a lot of people consider 12 " waist/hip difference ideal for many things ( health, fertility etc.). It is also considered pretty sexy, and men really like it. So I would just embrace it and show it off

No one here thinks you can't wear skinny jeans in the first place. The only person here that thinks that way is you. Lots of people who post here wear skinny jeans and their hips are fuller than yours.

You can try trouser jeans, straight leg jeans, bootcuts, widelegs, and flares. See which you like best. Straight leg jeans might be a good alternative to skinnies.

Try wearing your skinny jeans with longer tops and tunic length tops. If you can wear heels, that will also help.

The simplest thing would be to wear clothing that draws attention to your face and away from your hips. This season colorful long scarves are a big trend and will bring color and bulk upward to balance your hips. When the weather is warmer, try floaty long scarves or colorful beads.

For my highschool-young adult years and again now that I've lost most of my middle-aged weight gain I've had the same problem as you. Now at over 60 I'm grateful not to be saggy and look more youthful than my more endowed peers. Please don't waste half a lifetime like I did hating your figure. Go have a Nordstrom or other good bra fitting. These ladies see it all, so don't be embarassed. They can be a huge help.
Follow Angie's guidelines. You might also look at :

Hi Sana - welcome!

I have the same measurements as you, but I have about 39" hips at the widest. I'm five years older than you, and I struggled with my body just as you are, thinking my hips were abnormally large, and my chest was abnormally small. I wished I could shrink my lower half and enhance my upper half so I would seem 'even.' I've found a couple of helpful things that I'll pass on to you:

1. Find someone who has your body type that you admire, and wear the same types of clothing: fit, necklines, hemlines, and textures can be used to your advantage! In high school I was so depressed about my chest size until I noticed a very fashionable classmate who had a body type similar to mine. I copied her looks and they worked for me - such a confidence booster! I also looked for types of clothing worn by Kirsten Davis and Debra Messing, since they are pears with small chests. I scour YLF for advice on pear-shaped bodies, and other sites have been helpful.

2. Get a bra fitting. Even though I have a small A chest, a push-up bra that looked natural (not too perky and Barbie-looking) helped me feel better. Like Sarbear said, jackets will be your friend if you find the right fit.

3. When you go shopping or start to feel unsatisfied with finding bottoms, remember that the pant should fit YOU, not the other way around. I have had good luck with J Crew's bootcut jean because it fit my hip and waist - a first time I haven't needed to alter a pant! Just accept that you probably won't find something that fits off the rack, and find pants that fit in the hip so you can take in extra fabric at the waist.

4. Read Angie's guides for the Pretty Pear - you can even print it out and apply it to your current wardrobe or on a shopping trip - it helps!
http://youlookfab.com/2006/04/21/the-pretty-pear/
http://youlookfab.com/2007/08/.....r-in-2007/

Best of luck in learning how to dress your body! be sure to start a thread on the forum if you have questions or want feedback on anything!

I echo Maya's comments. I was always overweight as a kid and only now (age 27) have I finally gotten healthy. What people said back then still haunt me today. But like Maya said, it's not worth letting rude people ruin your life. I'm sure you are quite pretty, and once you see yourself that way, you will feel more free to dress your body to flaunt your favorite features.
My younger sister is 5'9" with a size 2 waist and size 6 hips. She's also naturally a barely A cup size. She has found ways to balance her proportions and looks fabulous. Maybe try some cute jackets with jeans?

Hello Sana. Glad to see you back.

First of all, anyone who comments on your chest size is pretty rude and tasteless. I know it ranges anywhere from difficult to impossible to shake off what others say about you, esp. at your age, but please try because those people are not worth getting worked up over.

Second of all, there are lots of ways to deal with a small chest. Others will probably have better input than me since I have the opposite problem, but padded bras and "chicken fillets" are a start.

Speaking as a large-chested person, you don't know how lucky you are! You can wear all kinds of necklines, strapless tops, woven vests, woven shirts, ruffles, bows, tie-necks, turtlenecks, and all kinds of other tops that I will never be able to wear. If you are frustrated over your jeans not fitting, you would be even more frustrated if you were large-chested. Things that fit you in the waist would not fit you in the chest OR hips. It's a nightmare having a big chest. Embrace your tiny frame!

Finally, there are always going to be rude and stupid people in the world, and those people are going to make comments about your chest regardless of its size. The comments and creepy looks you would get with a big chest are doubtfully any more flattering.

Hey :)
Thank you everyone for the sincere advice
I have finally realized that no matter how much I try losing weight, my body structure shall remain unaffected. It is therefore useless to go on stringent diets.

However, what still worries me is the fact that I have a flat chest and (some) people tend to comment on it ever so often. It makes me feel bad about the body that I possess. I did not ASK to be born that way, did I?

Yeah, hips are in vogue but flat chest is always frowned at.

I second everything that has been said.

I'm 33, and while I've never hated my body at all, just recently have I completely embraced my body, and started loving it the way it is.

I changed my thinking. I realized that there are SO many different body shapes for women out there - who are designers & clothing manufacturers to tell us what our body should be? Seriously! Who are they to me? My body is a combination of the genetic makeup of my parents - two people who I greatly love & respect. Because I am a combo of my mom & dad, and I love them, why should I not love my body? My husband loves my body, why shouldn't I? And to take it a step further, why should I 'care' about designers & manufactureres when they don't know me, they don't know my shape, they are simply making clothes in an attempt to fit an 'average' woman's body. Do I really want to be 'average'? Not particularly.

I realized that it wasn't MY body that had the issues, it was the clothes that have the issues. And I agree, it is extremely frustrating to be unable to find clothes that fit your waist & your legs/bottom. I'm right with you there. I think you & I have similar body builds (you're taller & weigh less, though). But then I started thinking, my body is just fine the way it is. I'm not going to let those designers/manufacturers tell me how I should feel about my body. Just because jeans are hard to find that fit doesn't mean there is something wrong with my body. It just means there is something wrong with the jeans.

I also started reading more online & in books about fashion & style. Everywhere I look, it talks about finding a tailor. Apparently almost every woman, including those super thin models on the runway, need their off the rack clothes altered for some reason. It's not our bodies that are the problem, it's the clothes that are the problem. There's just no way that any designer/manufacturer can make clothes to fit every body type out there. Even within the hourglass body type (for example) there are different sizes & shapes of shoulders, busts, waists, torsos, etc.

I wish you luck in changing the way you look at your body. It's hard, and takes time, but will be SOO worth it in the end.

I have to second (or third) what Becky and Anne have said. Clothes help with body image, but only to a point. Your posts and username are worrying, and I would encourage you to seek help elsewhere along with seeking help from us. Your self image needs to come up, otherwise you'll never feel satisfied no matter how great you look.

No matter what extreme measures you take, or how much weight you lose, you will always be the shape you are, just a smaller version of it. From your measurements alone, I can tell you have an enviable figure, so it's unfortunate to see some of the things you're saying about it. A small waist and curvy hips is consistently rated as the most attractive body type to have, and you're actually very lucky that no matter how much weight you gain or lose, you will still more or less retain a tiny waist and a feminine shape.

You do not have to come to terms with the problems you have with your body: your body has no problems. It's just a matter of changing your thinking, which is easier said than done. Everyone here has things they don't like about themselves and god knows I have done my share of complaining, but the key is to ultimately just move on and focus on the good things. You keep saying you are very slim on top, so focus on your tiny waist. Tanya does a fantastic job of that, and I also think she looks great in skinnies...and believe me, I have VERY high standards about who I like in skinnies. It's just not a look that I think is flattering on most women, but if she can wear them then I'm absolutely sure you can, since you have similar body types.

And even if you can't, or don't feel comfortable, it's really not a big deal. Certainly nothing worth being embarrassed over. I was like you for a long time--dying to wear skinnies but just couldn't because of my bottom half. Well, eventually I just came to terms with the fact that not all jeans were meant to flatter all body types, and I just focused on getting more bootcut and trouser jeans, and found ways of wearing skinnies that hid my hips or balanced them out. That's what this forum is all about: finding what works for you and accepting what doesn't. But I am still almost positive that you can wear skinnies.

I hope you find it helpful to be here, but like I said, changing your clothes is just half the battle. Hopefully we can help you with that, and in turn, help you change your attitude.

Thank you everyone for the help.
I have been trying very hard to come to terms with the problems that I have with my body.
It is difficult and, at times, I keep reverting to restoring to extreme measures to change the way my body is built.
I have seriously given up on trying finding jeans of the right size.
It is too much of a hassle and I find it embarrassing to admit to people that despite being slim I still cannot fit into a pair of skinny pants due to the large bottom.

Sana,
You have been on my mind since you first posted so I hope you are still checking in on the forum.

At certain points during my teens I had similar weight andmeasurements to you. I was annoyed by my big bottom and A/AA cup breasts. And I used to think that if I couldn't get a bust I should take the weight off the bottom half. IS that how you have been thinking?
Because the difference is that I am 4 inches shorter than you and by everyone count I know about that height difference means you are unhealthily underweight. I don't say that lightly, because we don't usually make comments like that on this forum - anyway I figure people usually know that about themselves.
But that in combination with what you have said about your feelings of deficiences that you have been on and off diets and your user name really makes me worried for you and I want to second what Becky has said explicitly and encourage you to get some help.

As for jeans not fitting - it is a pain isn't it? But even people with totally different figures find that hard. My sister is quite opposite to you - an inverted triangle with slim hips (she is slimmer than me but not underweight) Anyway she was bemoaning the fact that she can't get jeans to fit her because she has no waist and no hips.

I hope you will let people here on the forum will be able to help you with dressing for your body type - they are really helpful and kind. You will also get ideas from other people with similar shapes
all the best

The jeans issue is easy to solve. You need to have the waist tailored to accommodate your petite waistline. There are MANY women on this forum who have that alteration done. Myself included.

Hi Sana, we all have flaws or parts of our figure we don't like. I have honestly become more comfortable with my body the older I get, and looking back, I had a great body. (I wish it is easier to teach those younger than me to enjoy their young bodies, but I didn't believe it when I was told back then.)

My recommendation is to concentrate on your positives features and emphasize them in your style choices. Without pictures, it sounds like you might be a pear shaped (I am a pear). Angie has said that pretty pears don't become hourglasses with weight loss. Besides, curvy hips are so IN right now. Look at Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez - beautiful! I digress...Angie has done several blogs that discuss how emphasize a pretty pear's best features with clothing. However, it you post a pictures, the experts on the blog can confirm your body type.

but it gets worse once i analyze my body in the mirror and
become aware of the flaws
i do not ever find jeans of the right size
if it is large enough to accommodate the hips
it is way too loose at the waist

Just wanted to chime in here to say that there are all ages, body types, and body issues here. Some of us have had more time with the bodies we have and so have learned to accept them and dress them so that we aren't as preoccupied with what society often says are flaws or inconsistencies! But we all still have struggles. You aren't alone in that. I actually did suffer from anorexia as a teenager...it was the early 70's and it didn't even have a name yet :)! Since no one knew what the "problem" was, no one seemed to be able to offer me a solution either. But now there is help if you need it...and friends!

p.s....I had a revelation after I wrote this. Recalling those times, I realize now that the day I went to my mom and told her I needed help was the day my recovery began. The professional I saw offered me a safe place to explore feelings...and that WAS the solution, even if they didn't have a "name" for what was happening with me yet.

Just wanted to let you know there are others of us out there with similar measurements; I also am an hourglass with a small waist, a larger hip measurement, and a small bust (32AA). I admit I don't *love* being flat-chested, but I am coming to terms with it! :-)

At the risk of overreacting or sounding like a "shrink," your user name and the fact that you say have major body issues concern me. Please consider me a friend who urges you to seek professional help if it is needed.

The lasses have made great points. Your body type depends greatly on your shoulder width in relation to your hips. I’d love to chime in again once you’ve posted a visual.

Well, if your shoulders are relatively similar to your hips, than you most likely are a hourglass with a small chest. Hourglass is theoretically the ideal shape, so it's not nearly as bad as you think.

As for your chest, that's probably the easiest thing to balance with clothing. You can try wearing moderately padded bras ( have you had a fitting recently, I thought I was 34A and it turned out I am 32C); and than tops in lighter colors with a lot of details such as breast pockets, ruffles, rushing etc.

As mentioned, I have very similar measurements to you, and the same weight as well ( but I am 2" shorter, I am 5'6"). So I'll try to give you some more pointers once you post a photo.

thank you all
i shall try uploading a photo as soon as possible
i weigh like 50kg/110 pounds
in the meantime, i want to make it clear to everyone what my REAL problem is
i seriously have not much of a bust
i wear size A
this really does not bother me because the size goes well with the upper-body thinness
the thing is : it looks horrible with a 36.5 inch booty!
my butt isn't big, it does protude: it is WIDE!!
and this is the answer to tanya
my shoulders are broad, quite broad and bony
basically, i have thin broad shoulders, a narrow waist, wide( not big) hips, and a small bust!!!
life is very unfair at times

Your measurments do not sound as bad as you think of them. If you take a picture of yourself and post it we can give feed back. Even if you do not want to post the picture, I have found just taking pictures of myself in an outfit and posting it on my computer to look at helps me see myself in a very different light, somehow. You might try that for starters.

Hi and welcome! It is always easier to tell one's body shape if you post a photo.

My measurements are very similar to yours ( 34-25-37) and I am a hourglass. My guess you are either hourglass or pear or something in between, but it will depend on your shoulder line, that's why a photo is very helpful. Do you wear the same size on the top as on the bottom?

I do not think your lower part sounds big at all. I wear skinny jeans and body-hugging tops all the times.

hey

i have major issues with my body
i am 5'8
very thin
bust: 32inches
waist around:25-26 inches
hips between: 36-37 inches

what the HELL am i supposed to do with a body like that?
my butt is nearly ten inches larger than my waist
ideally, i should have had 34-35 inch hips
i cannot wear skinny jeans or body-hugging tops
the upper part of my body is ultra-skinny with my collar and shoulder bones jutting out and everything
but the REAL problem lies in the lower part
it is just freaking TOO big for the narrow waist
i have long thin arms and medium legs
i carry myself with immense grace and femininity to hide my physical shortcomings
i can't wear half of the things i could have worn had i had a slimmer butt!
just WHAT exactly is my body shape?
it is not hour-glass,it is definitely not pear as well
skinny leather pants, mini skirts, velvet trousers.......sighs
HELP! HELP!
