I like this point by unfrumped

And sometimes the color itself isn't right, not because it's by itself, but because it distracts from the other pieces, or is the wrong intensity or clarity or even fabric or something. Like a red jacket doesn't look right but bright pink does. That sort of thing.

I have a red jacket now and sometimes another color (like an orange or blue) won't work as well with it because the hue/saturation is too similar even though they are different colors. Sometimes if the paired color is a little paler or darker it suddenly really works.

Oh boy, I'm in trouble. Does everyone count their colors? Seriously, even after a year plus with Angie, I still just put together things that feel right. "Book ending" is the only real "rule" I've managed to internalize, and I don't always do it. But then, I've never been a matchy-matchy type. This kind of thinking seems just the height of fashion tyranny.

How strange! I've never heard of a "rule" like that.

What an odd rule to live by! Does the woman never wear prints with more than two colours in??

Yes I thought it was an interesting comment and I wondered if I was off track somewhere. Particularly for someone who looooves wearing bright colours. Hot pink and red look fab for example. Anyhoo, there you go...

I have to think there's a big difference between "can't" (which just gets me revved up, anyway!) versus "what has some merit in the art of outfit creation".
Meaning, it is really cool to have the red jacket and some tiny echo of red somewhere--lipstick is the obvious, if one wears red well anyway, or some clever bit somewhere, tip of a belt, or earrings, or whatnot. Sometimes there is something like that going on in an outfit and it's almost subliminal--it's there and it provides cohesion, but it's very subtle, but was intentional by the wearer. But that's only if it makes sense, which it would not, in some outfits, or maybe I just don't have that item, so what, I'm going to stay home?! Lots of times, the "perfect clutch" would be a certain color or metallic but guess what, nothing I had in that vein looked good, but I had black, so black it was.

To me there's a lot more to fuss over if the proportions of items don't mix well, or the cut or fit is off. And sometimes the color itself isn't right, not because it's by itself, but because it distracts from the other pieces, or is the wrong intensity or clarity or even fabric or something. Like a red jacket doesn't look right but bright pink does. That sort of thing.

Jen, OF COURSE you can add a third colour in an item on its own. I echo what Rabbit suggested too.

That sounds like very silly advice. If I could only wear two colors at a time, I'd feel like I was wearing a uniform. Perhaps your seamstress has a military background?

not Angie, but what? no

Sometimes I do use shoes or a bag to tie in another color, but as long as the shapes, colors and patterns work together in general, especially with two neutrals in the mix, a third color on it's own should be easy. Heh, you can even tie in red just by wearing a bold lipstick.

Yesterday I was getting my new black and white dress taken in and I popped my red jacket over to look at lengths. The alteratuons lady said no you can't mix the third colour unless you add a scarf etc. I thought 3 was the magic number. Angie, your thoughts on this...
