Elle, thanks for that really complete information. i need to look at my pants now!

Una, i know you've been shilling that lysse coated pair for the last 6 weeks! i have looked at it and put it in my cart, but i just can not pay that amount for glorified ponte pants. especially when the ag's cost me the same! i know, i'm weird!

Meredith, yes they can crease permanently. it can be attractive, giving the pants a lived-in look.

Gem, i'm counting on better production value with ag's compared to mango, but you never know, as Elle points out.

i will post the pants when i get home. i decided to keep the smaller size and

The ones I owned Meredith did not get permanent creases but mine are different to the heavier ones. By the way BJ I just received the Angie picks from the Nordstrom sale. I ordered my usual size & my bigger size from when I was 30 pounds heavier. Even the larger ones are giving me muffin top. I will post a K/R tomorrow as I have already posted a WIW today but am going to post the pictures here for you to see. Maybe it is just the deal with coated jeans. I think that I can't go bigger in these. They are loose enough. I don't think they would do a more relaxed skinny look well.

Another note about muffin top in general. I used to be in the rag trade (clothing industry) as a Quality Controller. I also studied pattern making & fashion design. It was part of my job to inspect the mini digital versions of what was laid on top of a "lay" of fabric before it is cut. The cutter had to follow the mini version to make sure nothing was missed & everything was cut on the correct grain. Cheaper clothing would sometimes cut the waistband going down the length of the fabric rather than across it. That way they could get more garments per roll of fabric. Now even non stretch fabrics have some give but they have more give across the fabric, from selvedge to selvedge, than they do lengthwise. When the body of the pants has grain going one way & the waistband the other you get different amounts of stretch, with less in the waistband. This can cause muffin top in pants that fit everywhere else. Unfortunately it isn't only the cheaper garments that have this problem sometimes. It is easy to see on twill & denim. The diagonal lines you see in the fabric should be going the same way.

I have some that stretch and some that don't (AG similar to these). I find my coated ponte leggings from Lysse to be what I reach for the most - same effect, but so much softer and comfier.

Bj1111 I have no experience with coated jeans, probably because it's a textural, "feely" thing for me, but I love the look and am fascinated reading others' feedback. I would think, with the coating, there wouldn't be too much give.

I've noticed that different coated jeans are different fabrics & coatings etc so I'm not sure how much yours would stretch. I have a very lightweight pair of & 7 For All Mankind that would stretch a lot to accommodate weight fluctuation but still showed muffin top. They also shrank down to fit me when I lost a lot of weight, no bagging. But they were very thin & light, not like the stiff heavy coated ones. Perhaps I originally bought them too small because they were so stretchy & I was able to squeeze into them lol.

I have a mango pair that grow from way too tight to way too big over the course of a day's wear. Irritating stuff. It's my last purchase from mango - I do like their styles but I've been very unlucky with purchases there - they just don't have the quality I demand

Recently I decided to buy some jeans in my smaller size, and although I like not having to pull them up constantly, instead I am finding myself unbuttoning the top button in many sitting situations. PIck your poison.

Can you wear the smaller ones around the house for a few hours? I think that is the only way to be sure. I have a pair of coated denim (Citizens of Humanity), and they stretch. I'm a little leery of your keeping the larger pair because of the drooping panel at the crotch. I don't think you'll feel very fab in those as time goes on.

Is it possible to try on duplicates of these sizes at the store? There is often some variation from item to item within the same size. Perhaps trying on more of the same sizes would give you a better fit.

I have coated jeans in two different brands that I have worn a lot and neither stretch or, if they do, it is very minimally. To keep the coating, I try to avoid washing them very often, choosing to air them out after Fabreezing or a day in the freezer. Even wearing multiple times, they haven't stretched.

I have some coated AG jeans from two years ago, and they do not stretch much at all. It doesn't look like they're the same pants, although the fabrication sure sounds similar. MIne are 80% cotton/15% modal/5% PU -- they're "The Legging" "super skinny." Mine have real pockets though -- labeled as jeans, not leggings, FWIW. I hope that helps!

does coated denim stretch?

i got two sizes of the ag leatherette jeans. the larger size front panel droops a smidge at the crotch but the legs fit. the smaller size give a bit of a muffin top and the legs are SNUG. if they stretch, the smaller size would be the ideal.

advice?
