I don't know if I agree with most of these. I guess I'll agree with waterfall cardigans, and maybe cargo shorts on men. Never been a huge fan of cowl necks although I prefer them over turtles. I can't really picture the square toes and I think the ones DJP posted are quite nice. And Cynthia, you made me laugh with your description of the plastic necklaces the newscasters are wearing! I have thought the same thing many times!

I have several of the large necklaces and still wear them with certain outfits I see J Crew is still selling these. I like my infinity scarf too for all the reasons stated by earlier jabbers.
Finally GOT my husband to wear some on trend shoes rather than running sneakers with his jeans lol. I read something by a mens fashion "expert" that unless you are actually running you should not be wearing them haha.

Hmm, this says distressed denim is continuing in 2017.

Back to not trusting my eye! Maybe I was in a rush for the extreme-distressed denim to be over. Fraying, I'm on board with.

My husband's cargo shorts are hand me downs from our son. I think he was in high school, and he's been out for ten years, so they're at least that old.
My husband buys nice shorts too (it's regularly in the 90s here in the summer) but wears the cargo shorts around the house, mowing the lawn, etc.

There was a whole media thing about "men most stop wearing cargo shorts!" last summer, but I took it as filler content looking to stir up the comments section rather than actual life advice I'm with rach that men shouldn't really wear shorts much (just personal preference - and frankly I don't wear them either), and think they're really for casual settings - beach, park, cottage. In those settings my husband does actually use the cargo pocket for his phone, sunscreen, hat - basically anything that he might need to stick somewhere and free up his hands (like a purse really!). I can agree that there are more streamlined and stylish shorts out there and my husband does have some, but realistically if he's dressing up AT ALL, he's not wearing shorts anyway! I don't think he's actually bought new cargo shorts in years, and maybe that is the crux of why the fashion world is trying to kill them off - urban/office dwelling men wear non-gear shorts so rarely they probably aren't buying many, and the thick fabric and sturdy stitching mean that cargo styles tend to last, and last. I think my DH's could easily be 10 years old, actually.

Yay for statement necklaces! They have been a part of my wardrobe for decades... long before they were on the radar... so they are staying. But yeah, the bubble necklaces were never quite my thing. I have to agree with Janet that there is nothing else like skinnies and tall boots in dressing for the dead of winter snowy/slushy mess, even though I get bored with the look by February 1st. I am going to try culottes, tall boots and fleece tights this year -- but I just know I will still be reaching for my skinnies on the coldest days.

I love a good statement necklace, just was never fond of those bright colored bubble style ones.

I still love the look and feel of skinnies tucked into tall boots when it's cold and wet/slushy/snowy. I realize the look is so ubiquitous that it's become tiresome to many, so I try to style my top half in a bit more unexpected way when I wear the skinnies/tall boots combination. I would love to do the OTK boot variation, but alas, OTK boots are a tough fit on me and generally don't flatter my legs very well.

Great question TG!

For me, the only thing on that list that screams dated would be the square toes of the 90's. I quite liked that toe shape at the time, as my feet are kind of square too, so they were very comfortable. But they have all gone. I think, as you said, the rest can be worn just fine if they are authentic to the style of the person. Except bubble necklaces. Always hated those - I think they are cheap looking. Statement necklaces - bring it on. Just not the bubble ones.

Can't actually put my finger on anything horribly 'out', but I can name some trends I've loved and would like to see continue!

-cropped flares (loved my white CF's from Anne Taylor)

-frayed edges (vs distressing) black jeans that were a closet orphan went into heavy rotation after being cropped and frayed. I'm still wearing them, with high shaft booties

-silky embroidered bombers (my unplanned Zara purchase is a wardrobe work horse)

-Marsala/wine/maroon (a Panatone colour of the year) turned out to be versatile and flattering - I have tops and accessories (purse, belt) and wish I had more.. Easy to pair with grey, and navy. Fabulous with white.

-slip on sneaks - just love the ease and comfort of this style of footwear.

Hmm, I don't really wear a lot of these things anyway! Cowl necks, IMO, completely depend on the item. I see them in slightly different versions every winter season, so I don't see them as dated unless the rest of the item is somehow dated.

As for "long cargo shorts", I must be misunderstanding. DH wears cargo shorts, and they sure aren't short-short. They aren't culotte length or anything, but they come maybe to the knee or barely above it, and I think they look fine. I'd much prefer those over, say, the cut-offs from decades past.

My mind keeps straying to non-fashion items.
Fashion wise, shredded jeans are the only thing that I feel have been overdone.

I'm adopting Kaelyn's idea of a CHILL area instead of trying to apply IN and OUT labels.

My CHILL area will include anything that makes me yawn when I see it in the shops or on a fashion blog--shredded jeans, platform sneakers, and statement necklaces. My THRILL area is for trends which make me feel excited about fashion again--sweeping, mid-length culottes, taller boots, and structured wool coats. My FILL-'TIL area is for items which I'll happily wear 'TIL I find something better to replace them because they FILL a need in my wardrobe--oversized cashmere wraps, fashion sneakers, and anorak-style jackets.

Thanks Kaelyn, for getting me sorted.

I have a pair of those hidden-platform round-toe booties, like them just fine, and have no plans to retire them.

Skipped shredded jeans entirely, and they looked dated very quickly to my eye. Waterfall cardigans were always only loungewear and only on strict probation.

A well-meaning but somewhat $#!+-stirring aunt left me everything, including her hoooo-boy *extensive* collection of dramatic statement necklaces bought during travels and from favorite local artisans. The bibs and, hmm, are some of them in the bubble category? are selling very (through a service with outlets on etsy and ebay) at very solid prices, so I'm glad that the memo that they're passé hasn't circulated. (Clarification: none of these were sentimental; at least, nobody in the family had seen her wearing them.)

Thanks for posting this, torontogirl. It's good to take inventory and re-evaluate with a critical eye, and keep what we like decisively.

I dunno about cowlnecks deserving to be on the list, even though I much prefer either a turtle or crewneck collar.

OVER-sized cowls were the collar is actually larger than the rest of the jumper/sweater is a bit much.

Hmm... As for my vote Jeggings, " distressed " jeans and muffin tops !
