I feel like I've bought a lot of clothes in the past year, but nothing stands out as being so fabulous - with the exception (still a bit early to assess though) of 3 Quince sweaters that are wearing really nicely so far. But clothing in general is getting SO costly, that I can't figure out which lane to take.

Interesting that so many of you love Levis. We have 2 stand-alone stores here but they are dated and uninteresting looking and I've never been in . Very mid-market and mainstream in their merchandising , which holds zero appeal to me . I haven't owned a pair of Levis since I was in my 20's but am really drawn to the vintage Levi look (509's I think) right now. Vintage Levi's pricing is insane though.

We used to have a Lucky Brand store or 2 here - one remains in the outlet mall, I think . It's not at all my look though and I've only taken a cursory spin through the store once years ago.

I usually do well with BR too, but their fits are SO inconsistent and without a store here, it's a risky purchase. I feel a little lost with clothing these days, to be honest .

Columbia for outerwear - coats, fleece jackets, gloves.

Kohl's for knit tops and sweaters (I like Croft & Barrow.) LL Bean has some nice knits, but the tees run short and right now I'm between sizes.

As for the dressier items - being mid-sized and living in flyover country, until I find good sources I have to make it myself, drive to Illinois or take my chances ordering online. Keeping my eyes open.

Interesting about Lucky Brand! I’ve had success with them in the past, and my leather fisherman sandals are Lucky Brand. Don’t see it much at retail these days. I wonder who carries it, since I’ve never seen a stand alone store.

Thanks for all the recommendations!

I've always had great success with Paige denim. They don't bag out, usually fit true to size, and last a long time.

I can't ignore graphic tees, as I'm a huge fan, and no one beats Life is Good. They wash and wear very well and I own them for years.

Solid tees, I really like LL Bean. Nice supima cotton and also wash and wear well.

A recent denim purchase that's been a home run for me is Lucky Brand Stevie flares. The short length is perfection with my cowgirl boots and my 5'3" height without having to deal with hemming them. I have them in two washes and they have been a delight to wear.

Jaime, I love the Isabel Marant Etoile cotton shirts too (bought second-hand, of course)! I seem to have acquired a whole array of them. And Roberta, I love Lucky Brand. I have that same utility jacket and I like that quilted one - it seems practical and cute! Other recent successes:
Hudson jeans fit me perfectly and are often available at Nordstrom Rack at a good price (or I sometimes buy them second-hand as the sizing is very consistent). The Rosalie wide legs are my favorites.

Old Navy jeans are surprisingly great. I think I wear my Wow Wide Legs more than any other jeans.

Im not a big Quince person, but their leather bags are pretty great.

Naadam cashmere sweaters, if you can get them on sale! Even their lowest price ones are really nice, come in gorgeous colors, and don’t pill!

Factory stores can sometimes be pretty good. J Crew Factory has a certain cut of pants that fits me nicely and looks surprisingly cool. Ditto for some of the jeans at Gap Factory. I’ve tried to love Banana Republic Factory but their fits are too odd on me.

Otherwise, I’ve been enjoying thrifting more than anything. There’s nothing like the feeling of success you get with a great thrift find!

So there are certain labels that I end up finding and wearing a lot:
Birkenstock and A.S. 98 for shoes and boots
Citizens of Humanity, Levis and Gap for jeans
Isabel Marant Etoile for thin cotton tops
Daniella Lehavi for bags
Since these are all second hand they do reflect what is available locally but all have proved hard wearing over years.
Shout out to my one regular new purchase: Chantelle bras.

Interesting Joyce! My sister who lives in England who has just gone back told me that she really likes Toast. I don’t think she has mentioned it before. We don’t have similar taste in clothing although sometimes we are surprised at wearing something a little bit similar to each other. She does tend to wear a lot of sack-like dresses, as she wrote once “but I like sacks”. I must look Toast up. I was worried about what to give her for her 60th as our tastes are so different that I am scared of giving something she won’t like and need to get her to be involved in the choice. So something like a gift voucher for a favourite brand would be useful. But in the end we found some artwork that she loved and I gave her that.

Another hand up for Uniqlo merino, never disappointed and multi seasonal. Wasn't as happy with the consistency of their t-shirts and pants this year. Everlane basic white T is a winner in fabrication and fit.
Missing Toast from England due to the extreme tariffs added in bringing their goods to Canada. The quality and styling of shirts, dresses, sweaters and pants is extraordinary but at this point not worth it.
I've gone back to Old Navy and Gap for basics like jeans, tanks and sweatshirts; still great quality lasting years at a good price point.

I was just thinking what great purchases my various Lucky Brand items have been. I wear them a lot, they're all machine washable, and their prices are reasonable. I just got a fantastic quilted jacket at Nordstrom that has been my go-to since I brought it home. It's warmer than the utility jacket, which is useful in chilly lakefront weather. I don't have finds for all the LB tops I own, as many of them were second hand.

I'm also a long time fan of Title Nine for casual wear. Only a few Finds, but I own t-shirts, sporty dresses, hoodies, and pants. They're eminently practical, with useful pockets, armholes that hide bra straps, etc. When I lived in a drafty frame house, I lived in their polartec pants in the winter. And women owned! They're the best example I know of how to use man-made fabrics and cotton together. I've honestly never had any T9 garment wear out. Their main drawback is that they are not very size inclusive.

Like Sal, my brands will be of no use to most of you. I remember though that when I was first trying to do the #30 wears in 2017 that I felt some items, supposedly good brands that I had got on sale or at outlet prices, were failing in a way after that number of wears, like getting floppy around the neckline or similar. I even wrote a post about it at the time, and was extremely happy that I had not paid full price for the items.
I am more willing to pay full price now but only occasionally if I really want something quite specific that I feel will easily pass the #30 wears. An example is my Verge white jeans. They cost $200 in late 2021, they’ve had 101 wears up until now. Just under $2 per wear. The pretty white flowers on them are coming off gradually however as I think they’re polyester (there was some recycled polyester in the fabric called Repreve) and so eventually they will not satisfy me but their basic structure is still excellent. Verge is regarded as a good NZ fashion brand, not “designer” but perhaps a “bridge” brand? Not fast fashion. But I think $200 is a lot for jeans, I have only paid that twice in my life, previously in 2000s for my only pair of bootcuts which again I wore for years.

I have been shopping online for the last couple of years. I have also been stocking up on my lounge and gear capsules. I realized that my life is mostly casual, so I may as well buy clothes for that lifestyle.
My successes have been with Lululemon. I buy all my Yoga and Pilates leggings, jackets and tanks from them. I also like their bags. I got a jacket and track pants last year, and they worked out well.
Lululemon fits me really well. They also have great colours right now. Lots of brown and olive. Perfect for me.
I added a sweatshirt to my wardrobe from Aritizia, and it has been a workhorse. I liked it so much I got a second one.
I have several Power of My People button-up shirts. I have been very happy with the quality of them.
All of my jeans are Citizens of Humanity. I have tried on Levi's many times. They do not work for my body type. C of H work perfectly. I have an old pair of Everlane jeans that are perfect, but the new Everlane jeans are a bad fit.

I finally made the leap into ThredUP--they curate their stuff, unlike Poshmark. The "success" would be that for your first order, you get 50% off everything you order. So I made out like a bandit with scarves, dresses, etc. The prices are reasonable, anyway, but the real deal is that first purchase.

My go to stores are the same as ever: COS and Uniqlo. I have Uniqlo tees that are 12 years old, and still in great shape.

Many of my COS items are just as old, especially the outerwear. The last two years I've been especially impressed with their brushed cashmere.

Ruti was a new to me vendor that I heard about from a fabber. While I don't shop there regularly, I do have two of the On the Go skirts, and a pair of the On the Loose pants, and all three are major players in my summer wardrobe.

I also had some nice success as well as a couple of fails with Zara items last year, but I always check them out.

It's been several years since I've shopped at Everlane, but I have many pairs of their barrel jeans, and all are going strong.

There is a Gap store near my doctor's office, and when I'm up there, I always check them out. I've made a few good purchases there over the last three years, including my burgundy high rise stride jeans.

I remember jumping on the Boden bandwagon ... a decade or so ago when Angie was so pleased with the brand. Purchased quite a few pieces including bottoms (Hamilton?), some patterned dresses, some lovely blouses. It has been awhile. BUT. I ordered last fall a leopard Emilia crew neck sweater. It has been a complete workhorse. Beautiful fabric, all cotton but drapes like it has something else in it, but it does not. Neck and sleeve cuffs have "intricate trim detail" (their words) that doesn't stretch or pull. After the leopard, I purchased Navy. Then black and also a trendy green cropped cardigan. The fabric is light enough weight that I should be able to wear well into spring; it does not read as a heavy winter knit at all. I pair the sweaters with new to me BaubleBar necklaces. Biggish beads that sit perfectly in the crew neck. These I now have in grey, brown with a single gold bead, and blue, and then another shade of blue (not the turquois shown, the blue I purchased must be sold out), smaller beads with a cute charm. Oh, and plus puffy heart necklaces, gold and silver because I wear both, but not at the same time (I don't mix metals). I get compliments every time - and I mean EVERY SINGLE TIME - I combine the sweater with the beads.
https://www.baublebar.com/prod.....ray-quartz
https://www.baublebar.com/prod.....-turquoise
https://www.baublebar.com/prod.....tigers-eye
https://www.baublebar.com/prod.....92&am

And oops, while I searched for the link, I accidentally purchased the ivory crew, which has been sold out, but was back in stock. You can see the sleeve and neck detail in the lighter beige sweater, like a pointelle almost, it is so pretty
https://us.boden.com/products/.....y-k1034ivo

These sweaters are amazing and I highly recommend.

My go-to's for some reliable quality would typically be Uniqlo and Muji. I love the Uniqlo U cotton crewneck tees and in general most of their pieces hold up well, but there can be some polyester in the mix with some of their items for better or worse. Muji has some really great striped Breton tops, 100% cotton that wears like iron, I adore mine and Muji cotton socks are fab as well.

Also, like CARLA and KKARDS, I'm a huge fan of Levi's. I have at least 6 different pairs. All are 100% cotton and just can't be beat for their quality and comfort. I also shop at Simons at lot, but each house brand item has to be assessed on a case by case basis. Some items are top quality, while others not so much.

So far my success was mostly at Poshmark and a bit at Urban Outfitters . The jeans from UO wear well and still in heavy rotation.
I may check Uniqlo in the fall - thank you for recommendation, Carla!

Patagonia is a great company. Their products are thoughtfully designed and very well made with good quality materials. And if they need repairs, they repair them for free. We’ve wrecked several jackets with our binoculars (the split ring catches on stitching) and they have fixed them, making them as good as new. Yesterday I wore a three in one coat that I bought over ten years ago. It is still going strong. I can’t recommend Patagonia enough.

I mostly purchase clothing from Massimo Dutti and COS. Natural fibers when properly cared for, last long time. I wear 6-7 years old items from these brands and when they stop working for me, able to resell them. I also buy them second hand because I know their quality. This is my most successful strategy.
Also, Heattech line (including fleece lined pants and knee high socks), U t-shirts from Uniqlo are my favorites, proven in their quality and longevity.

Eileen Fisher’s silk, linen and cotton woven fabrics wear like iron. Prohibitively expensive to me at full price but on sale or second hand is a great option.
The rest is chancy - my Uniqlo cashmere is not great, light merino sweaters from BR got unexplainable holes, Everlane is overpriced for their quality, Gap cotton pj faded in a couple of months. But I don’t get upset about it, it’s unfortunate but I knew I’m taking a chance on these.

Glad you're doing well at Uniqlol, Carla! Their items work well for you and your style - milk it!!

What Suz said - minus the bit about Simon's since I don't live in Canada J.Crew is unappealing at the moment. Boden and Anthropologie are too flouncy, frilly, and patterned for my own style (although that can change). BR is looking AMAZING. So is Ralph Lauren, COS, MANGO, Zara, H&M, and parts of Nordies, Bloomies, Dillards, Aritzia, and Macy's too. I'm having an excellent shopping season here in the US!

As for Levi's - HUGE FAN!!! The in-store experience is the BEST. I take all my clients, friends and family there now - all season long! The SA's are extremely knowledgeable. The assortment of sizes, washes and silhouettes is diverse. LOVE THAT. The in-store alterations and customization of product beats them ALL. More on that in a blog post next month.

Last, I've become a big fan of French inspired Los Angeles company Clare V! Their messages and colours are aligned with my own. We have a brilliant store in Seattle and I milked it! I find the handbags overpriced at full price - although worth it on sale. Their clothes are right up my alley. Bought two fashion sweatshirts (orange and tomato red). They work brilliantly for my style. We used to live in France soooooooo they make a lot of sense! Honest and authentic slogans that I much relate to. More about that in a separate post.

+1 on Levi’s. The 501s are my #1 worn jeans. The dad barrels are slowly turning into my #2s, easing out the cropped ribcaged.
But I’m also finding a lot of success with smaller brands, unfortunately these brands also tend to be spendy. But Frank and Eileen French terry has been a winner for me. Imogene & Willie has never let me down, I try to wait for the once or twice a year they offer 25% off. For bags, I’ve been wearing the 2 finds from a French brand Jack Gomme for the past couple of years, they are light but hold the essentials and are wearing really well

I have successes to share, for sure! Some coming up in my Fabiversary posts.

I am finding that my preferred brands/ stores are shifting, however. For example -- I used to do very well at J. Crew. This year, I haven't found a single thing that I liked and that worked on me, either online or in person.

Whereas Banana Republic, which for about five years was an almost total loss for me, to the point where I'd stopped even looking, has, in the past two years, netted me many successes, and all at sale prices. True, not everything I've ordered has worked. But the items I have kept seem to be holding up and are serving me very well.

I'm also doing well at Simon's. Again, I do not keep every item ordered. But this is to be expected when shopping online.

I totally agree with LJP the challenge of sourcing really good fashion finds is getting harder and harder. As we all husband our fashion dollars more closely, are there any successes stories to share? Favourite brands, and winning items?

Uniqlo is fast becoming my first stop when I cruise the mall. Every other year I add one of their merino wool crew neck sweaters to my collection. The 6 yo red one has 65 wears, and looks as good as my newest brown one - with 18 wears. Half-moon bags, joggers, thermal wear, puffers - all get top marks from me. Recommend, recommend!

Levis - their denim never lets me down, and they have some other interesting garments - usually natural fibres. Though I had to reattach a button on my new cropped trench, I’m quite pleased with the style and comfort of the piece - with an excellent price point.

Naturalizer footwear. Leather! Low heels. Interesting styles. The perfect last for my foot.

I only have two items from Anain - a Canadian brand. Their Cashmino knitwear are the warmest items in my closet. Not particularly fashionable, but I love my older tuque, and my newer ‘boyfriend’ sweater. Worn 27 times and washed once (cold water, delicate cycle, laid flat to dry). No shrinkage, and no pilling yet.)

Over to you…
