I loved the snark in that piece. I was never a fan of IT, especially for the prices.
I'm trying to get off the fast fashion train. I've found that, for my workwear, it's still the sane choice; while there is no goat at the new job, there is bleach. There is also the time factor: because I get so messy at work, I can't wear the same pieces over and over, I work several days in a row, I have no dryer so must line dry... so I stocked up on base layers at ON, got a couple of cardigans at the thrift shop (I literally work in a refrigerated room), and got all my pants from thrift or fast fashion stores. Because they will get ruined. I've already destroyed several garments and it's only been 6 or 8 weeks.

However, because of the closet edit, SYC, and no-buy I've signed on for, I seem to be reaching for the same garments time and again. It's helping me zero in on what I really and truly love, and as these items wear out, they will be replaced by high quality versions from ethical/sustainable lines. I believe that I should be the change I wish to see in the world; and it appears that enough people are feeling the same, that it's actually affecting the industry. Awesome!

Absolutely. The more we know the easier it is to make choices we can live with. Thanks for sharing this, Elizabeth. It's heartening to think we can make a small difference.

Exactly, Bijou. Sometimes it's hard to "put your money where your mouth is", but the more we know, the easier it is to make those choices.

I hope consumers can force companies to become good corporate citizens. One thing that really annoys me is when companies charge premium prices and then you find out that they exploit their workers, mistreat animals or have terrible environmental impacts. I am glad that these items are getting reported to help us become more savvy shoppers.

I agree, rachy. For a while H&M seemed like something unique, a designer perspective at fast fashion prices and accessibility, but for the last couple years it's just seemed like a badly executed version of Old Navy. Maybe it's remained more 'arty' in Europe?

That’s interesting. I stopped buying H&M because the design aspect has fallen off IMO...

Laura, I think you are absolutely right about IT, but that article mentioned quite a few "fast fashion" chains that were seeing reduction in sales. I'd love to see better quality and less waste!

True that consumer behavior can shift purchasing and thus suppliers eventually, but I don’t think the Ivanka Trump boycott was primarily about quality or worker protections.

I do see a lot more brands being transparent about their sourcing and more talk about reuse and sustainability. It’s a process.
