Angie and Greg, thanks so much for sharing your ideas for future YLF expansion. I've been thinking about this for a long time, and I wish I could contribute more ideas. As for now, this is basically how I feel: I'd really like YLF to become a viable venture for Angie and Greg (I already feel bad Angie is doing so much for us in her free time), but I also really appreciate being able to keep YLF separate and private.

Most importantly, I trust you. And thank you for making YLF such a unique online community.

In the meantime, I should remember to shop through YLF links (in addition to the YLF store).

Interesting thread. I am an avid blog lurker and I think YLF is definitely the best that is out there - specifically because of Angie's unique approach to all things 'style' and secondly the forum which has a great diversity ( in thought and fashion/style)

I'd definitely pay for more personalized shopping recommendations or for answers to ( what do I wear for xxx event) type of situations. My everyday life does not justify hiring a stylist but for certain events, I have wanted a professional's expertise.

What would I pay a premium for? That's a good question as a MOTG with a limited budget it would have to save me time. I love the idea of subscribing to a receive a more personalised service, for example by completing a questionnaire based on body shape, colouring and style persona I would receive an e-book which was pre filtered with the advice which suits my needs.

As an international forum member I'm unable to use the store, but again as a subscriber I would love e-mail notification of new items to the store which are best suited to me based on my past purchases, body shape and style persona.

Finally and not really online connected I can see the see the store forming the basis for fab home parties, where an army of mini Angie's loaded with her advice sell the products from the store whilst giving the full YLF experience, this would hopefully in turn provide greater footfall through the blog, forum and store.

Well there are my thoughts for the night, probably not worth a penny but I thought I would throw them out there anyhow.

Depends what the subscription fee is, but I would consider it because I have the impression that the ads slow down the loading of the site. If I ever get my iPhone, I would love an app! It would be nice if there were some way to incorporate an international shopping experience, but I imagine that is tricky because I have the impression that Angie has hands-on experience with most of her recommendations, which is of course part of their value. Also with the store section I am not sure if you are only supposed to review the item if you try it out or whether it is also welcome to comment on the item.

londonkiwi, we haven't thought hard enough about the international aspect. But we should -- thanks for bringing that up.

medusa, we LOVE discussions about topics like this so you shouldn't feel at all bad about starting the brainstorm. :)

Angie and I are passionate that the site should be free to all -- helping as many people as possible is what this is all about. But we have talked a lot about what premium features might look like.

One very simple example -- what if premium subscribers could decide whether or not they want to see the ads on the site? Would this justify a small subscription for some people?

Another idea is an eBook -- it wouldn't contain information that isn't already on the website, but some people might like to purchase a conventional book to complement the site.

A third example is an iPhone app (as has been discussed in the past). The value of this one may be limited by the number of people who have iPhones.

If people have additional ideas, or variations on the ones above, we'd love to hear them.

I keep thinking this over, because it's such an interesting dilemma: how do you help a business grow while also keeping a close-knit, intimate community? I wonder if others would be interested in discussing ideas for how to do this. (Greg and Angie, I'm sure you're thinking about this and have a lot of thoughts, but if it wouldn't bother you I also think it would be really interesting for us to discuss.)

The forum is an interesting mix of general discussion and specific questions for Angie. I wonder if it would be useful to have a way to mark or denote threads to make that distinction clear - would that make it easier for Angie to decide what to read? I'm thinking of something like a way for a poster to label a thread as general discussion/question for Angie. This sort of exists right now with the "Ask Angie" feature but it isn't really something that happens with every thread.

I also wonder whether some type of subscription service might be valuable for the site. Subscriptions are always really tricky - on the one hand, it seems like a good idea because it would make the site a more viable business, but on the other hand this site brings in people on a huge range of budgets and it would be sad to see people excluded if they couldn't afford a subscription.

I'm really interested in brainstorming and having a discussion about this. I hope this doesn't come off as me telling Angie and Greg what to do. I'd be really curious to hear what others think.

I think that one of the aspects that sets YLF apart is that Greg and Angie are running it as a business - it is thought through well at every level - a lot of blogs aren't like this and they grow too fast for the originators to control. They are often a hobby rather than an aspect of that person's own business.

I think that because of this forethought, when YLF attracts the growth that it really does deserve they key aspects of the community will not be lost.

From my perspective as a "international" customer, I would love the YLF shop to extend to items in UK based stores, or at least Nordstroms to offer better international shipping rates! I am thinking that is a while off yet - but I do love the idea of "foreign fashion correspondents".

Thanks for that post Greg - clearly put and I'm excited to see the changes you'll be making and trust you to do it right for yourself (financially) and to maintain the 'right' intimate and encouraging atmosphere that makes YLF special.

Had to share one comment from Medusa's original linked post because it made me laugh. The poster was being quite positive (unlike the others I read) but then went on:

'Dig the floral, I'm fine with loose tops as well, especially since you are just chilling out and not interested in displaying your tatas and constricting your torso. Or maybe you are, in which case this is not the best shirt for that.'

Very funny. I'm glad YLF is not like that but it has to move with the times and grow itself and I'm pleased to see that happen.

Greg, I wanted to thank you for your comment. I was actually thinking yesterday about how much time you both put into this site and forum and that, as of now, couldn't possibly be making as much money from it as your truly deserve, for lack of a better word. I hope I do not speak out of turn here, but I think we all trust your judgment, ideas and plans for this site because you have been so remarkable to us all. It is sort of like your favorite undiscovered band - you want to keep their brilliance to yourself for as long as possible because they are so special to you, yet you truly want them to achieve the success they have earned!

This is an interesting thread, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to say a few things about our goals for YLF as a business.

Of course, we do YLF because we love doing it and because it helps people. That is enormously rewarding in and of itself, but we also want it to be a sustainable business. Right now, it isn't that. It does make some revenue, but not a level that can support our investment in the site indefinitely. So there is no question -- our goal is to grow the number of readers and members significantly. This will allow us to continue investing, and to invest more. For example, we would love to hire a few people. Right now, between my other project and Angie's stylist business we are both completely maxed out. We *love* doing it, but the level of intensity just isn't sustainable.

Our priority is to grow in a way that maintains, and even enhances, the community that YLF has become. We have a lot of ideas, and we are actively working on some of them right now. We aren't ready to talk about them, but suffice it to say that during the next 6 months you will see some new things around here. Some of the features we are working on are specifically targeted at allowing YLF to maintain the current intimate feel even when there are many more users.

Regarding those sites in the NYT article... as many people have pointed out, they are doing something different. They offer an experience that is extremely focused and simple (post picture, give feedback), and feedback is "crowd sourced". This definitely has its own appeal, but we are passionate about offering an experience that is much deeper in terms of the feedback, advice and support you receive, and broader in terms of the extent that we can serve your style needs. Angie has developed a very special approach to style renewal and evolution and we would like the site to deliver more and more of this over time.

We're very confident that this has value, and that there is a lot of demand for it. Our challenge is to create awareness of this value (make no mistake, we are extremely envious of the coverage those sites are getting in the NYT). One thing we'd love to figure out is how to make YLF something that more people would recommend to others. This is tough, because we know part of the appeal is that for many people it represents a place to discuss fashion and style that is somewhat separated from the friends and family in their offline life.

I like quality over quantity here. All Internet communities tend to get worse when there are too many people involved. The best things about YLF are that the comments are constructive, there are no trolls and flaming, and every individual style is appreciated. And of course, we have Angie and Greg!

(such topics make me think of Stanisław Lem's quote: "I hadn't known there were so many idiots in the world until I started using the Internet." - idiots being of course everywhere but here :))

I'm selfish and don't want YLF to get too big. I try to stay on top of the new posts and forum messages now, I'd be overwhelmed if there were hundreds of new one's at a time.

I have a feeling YLF is exactly where Angie and Greg want it to be at the moment. Their ideas for expansion know no bounds but I believe they also have a time frame in mind.

The blog is very well trafficked and I fear this type of publicity is very rarely free.

I recommend the blog freely and really wish for the blog and it's components to grow at a pace at which Angie and Greg are happy.

Lynne makes a good point. The blog is the main focus of YLF (I think). The forum is the cherry on top, but the forum is much more than just a fashion feedback site! I would love for YLF to get much deserved publicity though.

I completely agree, Maya! I love the dynamic on the forum as we all get to know each other's individual styles and taste quite well, and yet also appreciate other people's outfit even if they don't fit with our own personal preferences. I think this dynamic is really missing on many other fashion forums.

Tara, thanks for that example! It is pretty harsh, and not that constructive. It is a good reminder of how constructive people are here.

Maya, exactly! Well put.

I don't mind the tone or bluntness of the comment Tara posted, but I do object to the lack of suggestions or constructive criticism.

I'm the same way as you Medusa. I love hearing about it when YLF receives some kind of accolade or publicity. But I always have a fear floating around in my head that all the things that make YLF special and unique are at risk when too many cooks are in the kitchen and it will become like any other fashion blog.

I actually checked out a couple of the sites...and while they don't have comments that are unnecessarily mean, they are for the most part overwhelmingly negative and judgemental.

Case in point:
http://www.gotryiton.com/looks/34A5BB8/

"No, no, a thousand times no. The shoes cut your feet off and make your legs look stumpy, the shorts are too short and too tight, and the shirt doesn't match in color, season, or fabric to the rest."

OUCH! No constructive suggestions, just "no no no!"

OK, well maybe that's just one example...it's not that bad all round. BUT I prefer YLF times 1 million. Here, you can get straight and constructive comments with some caring and respect thrown in.

I know what you mean. I like the level of ... accountability? (for lack of a better word at the moment) ... that a site of this size has. None of this random stranger leaving snarky comments stuff.

But on the other hand, I don't begrudge Angie or this website increased exposure, either.
