Oh Shiny, I assure you the men who have made comments were not turned off by the thought of Shannon and I being a couple. Funny though, because it was much more common to happen when she and I first became friends. It does not happen as much anymore, now that I think of it.

I spent a good decade of my life focusing on my husband and kids, and really putting my personal appearance on a back burner. I look back at some photos of myself, and I just cringe. I don't ever want to be that person again. Today, I went and did some volunteer labor at our local apple orchard. Even though I knew I was going to get quite dirty, I still wore cute jeans, a colorful tank over a black v neck tee shirt...I put my hair in two cut side pony tails and wore makeup and earings. It's important to me now to look my best, regardless of what I'm doing.

I agree that cheating is the wrong term and that we're not even cheating. I dress well for myself first. But am I the only one who was cracking up by the end of the article (especially that last line)? So ridiculous I can't even take it seriously and I can't help but feel that the author felt the same way.

Tassajara - it really distresses me when I hear stories like this. WHY are women catty to each other? We shouldn't be. But, I do think it changes as you grow older, so hang in there.

Nicole, I loved your post!! Where to start... I think I need to number:

1) Men starting to clean up their acts: high-five sister!! My DH may prefer vintage preppy clothes, but he takes care of his physique, gets regular haircuts, and spends time on a skin-care routine. I may have told this story before... if I did, I apologize... but here goes:

We were in Miami and it was too cold and windy to hang on the beach. We spent an afternoon drinking at a bar with street-side view ... parade of tourists walking by. We played this game. Every time an attractive woman walked by, I'd give him a quarter. Every time an attractive man walked by, he'd give me a quarter. We both had to agree that the person walking by was attractive. Well, by the end of an hour or so, his pile of quarters was overflowing and I had a pitiful pile!!

Now maybe we were being catty ourselves, but the point was, women take care of themselves and men don't. My pile of quarters were all men who were in their 20s. :-(

2) "Go ahead and look at MY wife" .... awwww, your hubby is a total sweetheart, isn't he? I don't think that's bringing woman back 100 years... I think that is thoroughly romantic.

3) Your best friend and being mistaken as a couple: my friend from waaayyy back in 7th grade - she and I learned long ago when out and about to hold hands and act like we were a couple if we didn't want attention of men. She learned that trick in europe as an exchange student: apparently (I don't know if this is the case anymore) two women hold hands as a signal to men that they do not want to be approached. It worked back in high school/college here in the US, and like a charm, though I think for different reasons.....

*Unfortunately* .... men today would probably cat-call even louder!!

"May you live in interesting times"

I totally agree with Maya there. We can't win either way! I am so sick of people being continuously making comments on what I wear whether I dress casually for going to my uni's library or going out at night. I have came to the conclusion that I should only dress for myself and my own desire to express my mood and attitude through my clothing. I have given up dressing for other women or for men because you're always going to have someone who doesn't like what you are wearing. For example, I went into university the other day wearing a grey knee length skirt with a black jumper, pair of tights (it's cold here in Ireland) and a pair of Mary Janes. One of my acquaintances saw me and actually asked me why I was "so dressed up" while one of my lecturers commented to me that it was a visual relief to see someone for once who wasn't wearing sweatpants and a hoodie. I guess you can't please everyone.

Hmmm I don't consider it "cheating". I think women are encouraged by the media to wear undergarments that make them look thin, or use unusual make up tricks to make them look young.

Personally, I don't wear spanx--the closest I have to spanx is a one piece bra/slip that is made of gut sucker material. I wear it with clingy dresses for special occasions--like weddings. I wear regular underwear and regular bras. But I do try to wear clothes that make me look smaller. I do wear makeup to make me look better. I do color my hair, blow dry it and even spritz a little hairspray. I don't see any difference between doing these things and wearing a push up bra or girdle underwear. Women have always done things to make themselves look attractive. I'm actually happy to see men have been starting to do the same. (OK, not enough men, but SOME guys are starting to clean up their acts.)

As far as who I do it for....Honestly, I do like to look good to men and women. While Sihayas recent cat call experience is too far, I do feel good about myself when I catch a man checking me out. I even enjoy when my husband notices when another man is looking at me. He doesn't get jealous or anything--I don't get off on that kind of thing. But he'll make a point of patting my rear, holding my hand, or touching my back. To me he's saying "yeah, go ahead and look at MY wife". Maybe that is bringing women back 100 years--but honestly that is how I feel. I also like it when other women compliment me, or check me out.

But I like to good good for me too. I actually feel better physically if I am well dressed, have make up on, and have my hair styled. If I get caught out in pubic without being showered, dressed and without makeup--I feel, not sick, but not like myself.

My best friend is a very attractive woman. She turns a lot of heads. She does not dress provocatively (just the opposite actually). She is not tall, she does not have a knockout hourglass figure, she does not have big boobs--she has a small waist, small chest and a little bit of booty going on. I don't think she notices when men look at her. But there have been several occassions when men assumed we were a couple. My friend picked right up on it and even played up to their assumptions. She thoroughly enjoyed herself. I don't really know where I'm going with this story--It probably does not have anything to do with Shiny's article. I guess it's just another story of how women are judged by men and it's up to us as women to decide how we want to move forward with other's opinions. You can either be angry and insulted, or take it for what it's worth and be confident in who you are.

I have to admit I don't cheat at all, unless you count a minimizer as some sort of reverse cheating. I just fear that once you start, you won't be able to stop. If I wear Spanx one day, and leave them off the next, it's going to appear like I gained 10 pounds overnight. And not that I would ever wear a pushup bra or padding, but if I did, it would be so obvious as soon as I took it out. I'd rather just have people see me the way I am so there are no surprises.

I just can't do it. Women have so many body image issues already, and wearing these things only seems to encourage and legitimize that. I'm not judging anyone here who does it, but I can't do it myself. I wouldn't want to set the bar for myself so high that I can't even reach it. If I meet a nice and attractive guy, I want to make sure he likes ME the way I really am and not some Barbied up version of myself.

This reminds me of a discussion I had with a male friend a while back. Most guys I know seem to agree that they do not like makeup on women, but they don't seem to have a clue what the function of makeup really is. To them, it's only makeup if it's noticeable, clownlike face paint. They don't seem to realize that a lot of the women who they consider to be "natural" beauties are wearing makeup too. Just because they're not caking it on and painting their faces funny colors doesn't mean they're not wearing anything. Makeup is used far more frequently to conceal, enhance, and even out than it is to just completely alter a person's appearance.

Shiny, I completely agree with you. I do it too for myself almost exclusively, then for other women, and only at the end for men.

Maya, truer words have never been spoken. It seems that the expectation is to be super gorgeous and super natural at the same time. Lately I have been indeed felling that no matter what one chooses one seems to always loos on some level.

I had more of an amused reaction - I thought the article was going to say something about plastic surgery, which would have astounded and depressed me... but then it was mostly about undergarments!

Women have "cheated" this way for eons.... corsets and girdles and other body torturing instruments. I'll take Spanx anyday.

Philosophical question (which is sure to keep me from getting around to house-cleaning today):

Do you think women "cheat" like this - for:

1) Men
2) Other women
3) Themselves

Personally, I "cheat" for me alone, with #2 next, and #3 last (though that may be because I'm married) ... however I have long felt that women dress more for other women, than they do for men.

Discuss.

"Men meanwhile were asked what outfit they believed women to look sexiest in.

While women believed a classic black dress or snug fitting jeans was the best, men thought short skirts and low-cut tops were the way to go."

If this is really true, that's just depressing. Trashy wins out over classy once again.

Women seem to lose either way. On one hand, we're ridiculed when we're not natural beauties, and on the other hand, when we try to enhance ourselves, we're "cheating" and "trying too hard."

If the gorgeous, genetically gifted stars "cheat" then is our idea of beauty so skewed that it's impossible not to "cheat" and still be perceived as looking good? I agree, Kyle, that media makes it hard to be a woman.
