I'm a fan of the bevy and white striped pants also! They seem very "nautical" or "maritime", just like the painting.

The navy pants are fantastic. It’s interesting that you are making black/navy a signature - very nice. Well done with the challenge - so thoughtful! (I’m a big fan of the Vivienne files too....)

Really enjoyed reading your thoughts with these, even if it didn't end up going quite where you'd planned! I hope you do get a chance to experiment further with this, and that you're able to articulate the mood you feel from the painting. To me your second outfit picks up on several elements from the painting; in addition to color, this looks like something one could easily wear out on a boat/marina or even simply relaxing by some water (lake, river, bay...).

We all see things differently and we all have different items in our closets. I think the stripes definitely pick up the feeling of the strong yet delicate white elements of the painting.

Katerina -- Your version is gorgeous beyond all words.

Thank you, Sal. When I selected this painting, it was my goal to practice combining black and navy each and every day. I want to make the black/navy combination a signature.

Thank you, Barbara Diane. It is always nice to see you. Hope all is well with you.

Sterling, thank you for sharing you process - interesting how we all go about it in our own way. I am planning on trying the balcony too and tried to put together some items yesterday. Just pulled some stuff from my closet and played. Not really happy with the combination yet. I admire your structured approach.
I think the striped trousers are perfect for the outfit combined with the white top. I look forward to what you come up with next!

I like the stripes too - I think they echo movement.

There is no right and wrong - we all see things differently. I would love to do the Gauguin but it is very chilly here and I can't capture the mood now:)

But I think when you have time you should try black and navy for a day. If it feels wrong then nothing is lost.

Thank you, Joy!!! I thought I had missed the mood of the painting, but maybe the stripes speak to the linear element I saw in the painting. YAY me.

Sterling, those are fabulous choices for that picture. I especially like the navy with white pinstripes. They really capture the painting for me.

First, I want thank Sal for starting the July Art Challenge.

I was torn between the Whiteley and the Gauguin. The Whiteley spoke to me because of its depth of beauty and color scheme, which closely matches my own color palette. It would be a wonderful exercise in coordinating black with navy.

However, I wondered if that would be too easy. I seriously considered the Gauguin as my inspiration. The Gauguin would force me out of my comfort zone and make me use some less worn pieces of my wardrobe.

I used The Vivienne Files to develop color schemes for both paintings. Below are the two schemes I developed that would work using my existing wardrobe. The first color scheme is more authentic to the painting than the second version. The second color scheme challenges me to a greater degree.

I finally decided on using the Whiteley. The color scheme is more faithful to the painting than the second (i.e., it was a stretch to pull black into the Gauguin color scheme and I don’t own grey work pants).

I didn’t just want to use the color scheme. I wanted to embrace the feeling of the painting in some way. I thought of using rose gold jewelry, but I don’t own any. The white jumped out at me. The bridge, the balcony suggested iron and steel. I decided to focus on sterling silver jewelry. Jewelry with a harder edge than I normally wear. Silver cuffs. Long dangling silver earrings.

Today’s outfit was not what I had intended or hoped. The previous week had been off-the-rails busy. I only had Sunday to catch up on all the errands that had been previously postponed. I started the day with a Weight Watcher’s Weigh-In and then scurried to the gym to get my workout done. That meant black/white so I managed to be true to the color scheme at least.

Later I managed to change into real clothes. I didn’t have time to put on jewelry or give much more consideration to the challenge than that. My ensemble was true to the color scheme, but it certainly did not capture the mood of the painting.

I am wondering what that mood is. I plan on talking to some of my artist friends tomorrow at work. They will understand the mood and help me. It always helps to have friends that have your back.
