I agree, Las Vegas is one of the most over air conditioned places I've ever been. It's astonishing. If I lived there I'd get colds all the time from the temp changes. (What am I saying? I'd never live in Vegas, although the non strip parts of town can be charming in their small town way.)

Reno's not nearly as hot though, even in the middle of summer. I mean, it's proper desert heat, but it's not lay down and die Vegas heat. Nevertheless, I kinda agree with Rae, a mile one way is a lot to walk in the summer when you need to look presentable right after you get there. Maybe a cab is your best bet.

I am with Marley - the last time I was in Vegas, it was super shocking to go from the outside to the numbing cold of, say, an outlet store. If most of the day will be spent inside, I'd dress for the A/C. If you can't tolerate the heat when walking, a cab is an easier fix than being stuck in a talk with no way to warm up...

I just got back a few days ago from spending over a week in Vegas. I wasn't there by choice - who would choose to visit Vegas in July? But, I was meeting a sister and niece for some activities that my niece was participating in. Anyway - I knew it was going to be hot - and so I packed accordingly - and I ended up freezing 90% of the time! Seriously! The air-conditioning was jacked up so high that I was pretty much. We walked outside probably 2 miles a day - and in comparison to the frigid temps in the buildings, the outside temps (in the 100's) felt good to me! I wore loose fitting clothing and piled on the layers when inside - and took them off when outside. It was really confusing for my body - can't imagine living in that kind of climate full-time!

It has been more humid than usual in Northern California recently, but 'more humid' for us is a lot of the country's 'wouldn't even notice', so...

Reno will probably be warm, but not nearly as warm as Las Vegas, and mornings and evenings will be cool. And the A/C will definitely be a factor. I would just go for layer able options with maybe some knit blazers so you can tweak depending on the environment.

I like Reno; it's a funny little town, and the landscape around is lovely. Hope your conference goes well, AG!

I am not sure what constitutes humidity. Here 75 feels hot and I tolerate beach humid much better than desert heat. Who knows? Linen and loose sounds good to me.

Deb, I'm gonna say "very humid" in Reno is "normal weather" in Austin... When I've been there humidity didn't even register on me. Also, it cooled off at night. So weird we have different experiences of the same place.

Reno is having thunderstorms right now and it is very humid. I am not sure how long they will last, have not heard. Shorts and tanks in the summer in Reno. It is the high desert and does not cool off.

Dry heat is a wholly different animal. I can do 100 degrees in dry heat--and Nevada is dry heat. I cannot do even 75 degrees in humidity. You will be fine.

I understand this dilemma well! I definitely do a stretch pencil skirt or VC tube with a nice tshirt, linen if possible, and an airy wedge. Linen has been mentioned, and if you do linen pants that is great too. One of my solutions is bringing a linen blazer for AC. It gives me a confidence boost for professional meetings when I feel not-professional coming in from the heat! Because it's casual dress, the linen wrinkles would be fine -- they're a feature, not a bug. :). Good luck and I hope the conference goes well for you!

Hey guys, it's pretty much Northern CA! It won't be really hot until midday. A walk in the AM when it's cool might be super nice, as might the stroll back in early evening. Sure, it may top 90 at its hottest, but it has some degrees to trawl getting there... Also, if you get even a little sweaty? The arctic AC will fix that in a jiffy, and you'll be very happy in your sweater.

I would just try not to combine the being outside with the being inside if at all possible. Wear toppers and summer or neutral colors indoors, and pay for the shuttle or whatever to get you to the conference each day.

Unless you are walking really early in the morning, for me a thirty minute walk in that heat if my body wasn't used to it would ensure I showed up wet and stinky, even if I was wearing the lightest hot weather gear clothes. If I wear in your situation I'd take some comfortable hot weather clothes to change into after you've left the conference each day and are doing your own thing.

ETA: after IK's post I think I might be off because I'm basing my assumptions on more humidity, I'm thinking of summers spent in Mumbai and New Orleans...

It's dry heat in Reno - it's right near Lake Tahoe. It will probably be amazing! Plus cool at night. Dress like you would for LA. Start with a light layer up top and bring a cardigan and a jacket. Capris or pants are fine. You will feel cooler in 90+ degrees of dry than you would in 80s and humid. It's totally walkable. It will be fine!

Wow. That IS a challenge.

I like the idea of the VC skirts. If you're going to be in frigid air con, definitely some kind of topper. And you might even want booties, even if when you're outside you wear sandals (if you have sandals.). You need a tote to carry topper and shoes to and from the venue.

Ugh, having to combine muggy 90 degrees with icy A/C, makes things difficult. Do you like or have linen? That's a comfortable and casual option if you aren't wrinkle-phobic. :) Today I'm wearing my white linen J. Crew pants and love them. Also, I think dresses, with layering, are also very good when it's hot outside. I've been wearing a cotton dress a lot this summer along with a sleeveless watermelon stretchy knit loose sheath, which is really comfortable. Have fun and I hope you get to meet up with Deb.

I have a 4 day conference in Reno tomorrow. How am I supposed to dress professionally for 90+ degrees? I think I'm going with VC tube skirts and dressy tees. I have not returned the Ted Baker floral tee so it may make an appearance. We will be walking the mile from our hotel to the conference (or maybe I will not be able to take it and will be doing a cab!)...

The agenda says casual dress and also that the facility is freezing A/C so I am bringing the HL sweatshirt jacket for inside. Talk about a wardrobe hole! I don't want to buy anything because it will be useless for my real life.

YIPES!
