FWIW, Relagen is an arthritis drug. Why it works for my sciatica pain, I'll never know. Just thought I'd mention it in case you ever need to start taking medication. I had to try several medications before my doctor found one that worked for me. Frustrating, but worth the trial to end up with something that keeps me walking and going about my daily business. I seriously hope you find solutions, and that your toe won't become deformed. I have a bunion on my foot, which my daughters have nicknamed "Bob." That lightens things up a bit for me, but I completely understand your concern about how your toe is going to look. I have somehow managed to find stylish shoes that hide Bob so nobody know's he's there, LOL!

Mander,
I'm so sorry about the arthritis! My twinnie has it in one of her big toes and I just hope I don't get it too. I have heard that the glucosamine mentioned earlier by BiscuitsMom does help a lot and the chondroitin also.

Aww, thank you for the sympathy! It isn't actually all that painful at the moment, only when I wear (or rather, attempt to wear) certain shoes or if my foot hits the ground in a particular way. The doctor said it was just the beginnings of garden-variety osteoarthritis, and that I shouldn't wear tight shoes. Since I can't stand shoes that aren't comfortable anyway, it's not really too much of a problem. I just hope my toe doesn't get deformed over time!

Bless goodness! I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I guess it's good to know exactly what it is, but I hope you get your much-needed pain relief. If you don't mind, I'm going to share my story with you, in hopes it will help you (see below). As bad as things seem right now, hopefully this is a condition you can manage so you don't suffer.

I went 20 years with leg and back pain that gradually worsened over the years until I was in constant pain and could barely walk. I went to various medical doctors, and none of them knew what the problem was. They would just tell me to put my legs up and rest. The problem was that putting my legs up and resting did not get rid of the pain. When it finally got to the point where I went 7 days and 7 nights with pain and could barely walk, I went to a new doctor and begged her to help me. She did an MRI, which revealed I have a bulging disk on my lower spine that presses on the sciatic nerve and sends pain down my legs. She put me on Relafen, and I've been taking it ever since. Yes, it's an NSAID, but without it I'm in a lot of pain, so it's either take it and accept its risks or live with chronic, disabling pain. With medication, I'm practically pain free, though I do have to watch how I move my body. There are certain things I can no longer do without causing pain.

Like I said, I hope this helps. Please explore all measures that you think might be helpful, until you find the answers and solutions you need. Good luck. I'll be praying for you!

So sorry to hear about this, Mander. I do agree that there are helpful measures you can take to reduce the pain and swelling, if you are lucky. Hope that is the case for you!

So sorry you're in pain, Mander That really sounds like no fun, but judicious exercise *will* stall the progress considerably and certain diet guidelines can help too, depending on the kind you have. I'd ask your doctor about options for controlling it.

(I come from a family where most of us women develop arthritis earlier than the boys, and I've had stiff knee joints since my late twenties --- but it's actually better than when it started now, having lost weight, getting some gentle and supportive exercise in the pool, and eating healthier.)

So my foot has been bugging me for a while and it felt like I had a lump on my toe. I happened to be at the doctor's today so I asked about it, and lo and behold, it's arthritis! Dang it!

I guess on the bright side I never was one for heels, but it's kinda sad to think it's only likely to get worse.
