Lara:
I hope next time you do get the best fit for you, good luck (y).

Josie411:
The "reshaping" issue is so interesting. I wore bad bras almost since I hit puberty. So my breast are a little bit saggy. I'm 23 and I've worn a 34DDD for about 1-2 years, and they used to fit me well at the beginning (I think). I've actually lost weight and a few centimeters but I'm having problems with the fitting and thinking to move to the 32F. So if the reshaping thing is true it would be a bless, perkier boobs without surgery!

I thought of surgery before too but also thought that in my case it was a reflection of a bigger problem and I needed to solve that too, to love myself first, because if I didn't, it wouldnt matter if I got a prettier nose, smaller/bigger breasts, lose weight, etc. I wouldn't be happy. So loving myself is my priority, I'm good with my boobs, even if they're tricky to dress.

Dixie - I think there is some truth to the right bra altering your shape. For me I experienced a redistribution of some back and underarm fat to my bust. Did not change my size but over the months I have become more round, less deflated, and noticed less under my arms/back. I lost a lot of weight over a year ago so welcomed that as I was rather deflated lol. I don't think it alters the actual breast tissue, though I have seen comments to the contrary. Honestly I think it is fat, which can and does move about (think cinched waist).

I had often thought about reduction surgery over the years - for physical relief and yes, partly for vanity - in that order. Now I am clear I do not need or want it for either reason. I am still ample but it is comfortable, not a physical burden and I can wear most clothes.

Dixie, the 32A fits OK, but the underwires stick out a little too much on the sides of my breasts. After learning more about the proper fit of bras, I did order the same exact bra in a 30B, and I was able to compare. That is when I noticed that the underwires were too wide on the A cup and fit my chest better on the B cup. I could see how the A cups on my current bra weren't filling up very well, because the cups were really too wide to fit the breast well. I didn't end up keeping the B cup simply because it was an expensive bra, and I could see that I really needed another band size down in a C cup—which the company didn't make. The differences were subtle, but they were there. So I just figured I would stick with my A cup bra until it wears out and then try again.

The band on my A cup bra does ride up a bit, but not too bad. It's mostly the wideness of the cups that's the problem.

I actually saw that calculator but haven't try it yet as it seemed more complicated, but I will, thanks for the links. And yes, I'm obsessed with the wonders a good bra does! I read that wearing the wrong size of bra can alter your breast tissue... Perhaps it's just a myth, haven't done my research.

Echo:
I'm sorry, I didn't meant to generalize and I recognize not all people do it because of that, but I have heard of people that did it because of it and even in this community, I saw a post of a user that said she was going to get surgery because of back pain and asked about what size of breast looked better in a classic button shirt, so she would fit them nicely. I understand the surgery, but the part of looking for a breast size that fit that type of clothing... I thought, well, if she gets the shirt tailored and a good bra, the boob size wouldn't matter.
I'm sorry if I'm offending anyone, I just say if you're thinking of getting surgery only because you want to fit in a certain type of clothing, try a good bra and tailoring first, perhaps you would change your mind, because those two things make wonders for you. Some of the back pain can be relieved with the right bra. At the end, everyone is free to do with their bodies whatever they want.

There is a specialty boutique in a city near here that carries almost every size under the sun. Additionally, they are able to tell a person whether the band or cup size on a particular brand/style runs accurate, big or small. And, like there was recently a discussion here, they can recommend the proper style for one's shape (full coverage vs demi, for example).

And while I am not in the category of seeking a breast reduction (I've never been big, because as it has been mentioned, a D cup is NOT that big on many people), I would take issue with the idea that most people undergo major surgery in order to fit into clothing. That's awfully presumptuous, IMO. From my understanding, reductions are often done for medical reasons including back pain. While a well-fitting and supportive bra can help with that, it cannot completely alleviate it. I believe that the decision to have a reduction is a serious one that a woman makes with her doctor, not her stylist.

I did not have good results with the Herroom calculator. I found my correct size by using the measuring guidance on Reddit's abrathatfits. Here is a link to their measuring guidance - http://www.reddit.com/r/ABraTh...../fit_guide. Here is a link to their super helpful forum - http://www.reddit.com/r/ABraThatFits/.

Following their guidance changed my life - seriously! In the right bra (correct size AND correct style for my shape) I look like I lost 20 lbs! I can wear button downs. You can see my waist. No strap grooves. No backaches. No headaches. Amazing.

I was shocked by the size at first - 28 GG. Yikes!! But it is all relative - band size to cup size. I am 5'7" 125 lbs, and over 50 so the girls are heading south, but with the correctly fitted bra I can defy gravity.

Even within the same brand, the bras fit differently. Wacoal fit me the best but some styles I need a 34c and some I need a 32D. I go into Nordstrom every year for a fitting because I have found as I age my body changes so much.

Oh, yes, bra sizes do vary depending on the brand and style of the bra. We have a few good boutique bra shops near us and they have been life savers in the fit department. I most typically take a 32C, but can also take a 30D, depending on the style, Now that I have a favorite style that fits perfectly I hope they never change it. It's wonderful!

Answer is no. Bra shopping is on my list. I've gained a handful of pounds since January. My usual bras are fitting tight - they look passable under a fluid fit tee shirt but are getting uncomfortable around the band and not ideal under a more body con top.

I am on the fence about replacing, since it is a major -- but very worthwhile-- investment-- or focusing on losing the few extra pounds instead.

Oddly enough I have one bra right now that is comfortable and looks good under body con tops. And it is a Victoria's Secret 34B. Same size as my expensive Chantelle 34B's, which are fitting too tight, and which I stocked up on years and years ago, fit just right and way better than the VS's, which I purged down to just one last bra...

Meanwhile this summer I went bra shopping for DD#2, who is 4 inches taller and way more busty, and while focus was on finding her new bras and not me, I tried on a few of hers and found that in some brands (don't recall which) I fit very well in 34D's. (She is in a 34DD).

Janet, you're right, I saw your last outfit post and you don't look huge, your rib cage looks tinny. I don't think bra sizes say a lot of about bust size, people get scared of D+ cups because of the usual sizing system.

Oops, did not finish. I was measured and told the woman what kind of bra I wanted, e.g. Full coverage, t-shirt bra, etc. i like to have a few different types depending on what I will be wearing over the bra.

The SA pulled a few for me to try on in first a 36 D and the cup size was to small. Moved up to a 36DD and while the cup size was fine, the center bottom panel did not lay flat against my chest. Found a wacoal that worked and then raised my arms over my head and the bra stayed put (the bottom of the bra did not ride up. They kept the girls secure so to say). Tried on another Wacoal that I really liked but the 36DD did not quite fit perfectly so I tried on the 36DDD nd it was perfect.

I tried about 10 bras before finding 2 that I loved. I am still looking for a racerback, but they had none that fit well.

Bra fitting is tricky -- as Lara says, it's not only about cup and band size but also how wide or narrow set the cups are, whether they accommodate more shallow or fuller-at-the-top breasts, etc.

I'm also a tricky size, and it's not necessarily apparent from looking at me. I have a medium build but quite a narrow ribcage and band size for a woman of my size. Consequently, it makes my cup size sound really big. I don't think people would look at me and peg me for a 32E or a 30F, and yet those are the sizes that work for me.

I find that a specialized local lingerie store can be the best for fittings.

I was measured at private lingerie shop 3 months ago. I usually get measured every couple of years and it was good to find that it did not change. That said, I measured 35D. The bras that fit me the best were Wacoal. One in a 36DD and the other a 36DDD.

So getting measured is not enough. You have to try on the bra to make sure you are getting the perfect fit. I tried on at least 10 before I found 2 that truly fit me. The bra just does not have to fit the gals, but the middle of the bra should lay flat against your body. And then there is the true test, raise both arms in straight up and make sure everything stays put.

It is worth getting the proper fit in a bra, because you will look great in your clothes.

Yes, it's a very interesting discussion! I myself am quite small (I normally wear a 32A, because that's easily available), but I think I am actually a C cup. My proper size I think is closer to a 28C. But since those aren't around, and since it's even still moderately hard to find a 30B, I just wear a 32A.

I hope your mom takes your advice!

Marley:
The thing is, I do need a context, if the 32F doesn't fit me I obviously won't wear it, but it is actually the equivalent of my 34DDD, just with a smaller band size and bigger cup. I read they're good in Nordstrom but based in my experience in other stores, the "fitting ladies" never fitted me well. Almost all stores don't know what to do with +D cups. I don't really take them as experts, they are just trained to measure you and give you advise according to what the store is selling.

I think it takes someone who has been trained to fit bras to help you find the right one - rather than reading something on the internet and deciding that that is the size that you wear. Instead of going into Nordstroms thinking that you already know what size bra you need - I'd go into Nordstroms and have an expert measure me and recommend a size for me!

Bra fitting is a recurring topic on YLF. This thread has loads of information.
At my last fitting at Intimacy, I ended up with 3 different sizes. Each company sizes a little differently, so I never buy a bra without trying it on.
Nordstrom does have a very good selection and a good return policy if you need to order online to find your size. Good luck!

ETA: fixed link, I hope

I've read that the majority of women use the wrong size of bra and I'm really curious about how the girls in this site feel about this topic.

I want to share with you a pair of personal experiences and thoughts.

Today, I noticed an ill fitting bra that my mother was wearing. I asked her what size it was and she told me a 38C. For context, she used to be obese (she's really proportionate and tall so IMO, she never looked like it). I know there is a better method to find your bra size, but I measured her, and her under bust is 35 in and her bust is 40 in. So, I rounded up the band size to 36, leaving a 4 in difference between her under bust and bust, A, B, C, D. That's a D cup. "Mom, I think a 36D could fit you better". She started laughing and made disgusted faces. "I can't be a D cup. I don't have big boobs. In my youth I used to wear a 32 band, then 34... but a D cup, never". I joked with her about her negative reaction to a D cup. "Mom, that's not a bad thing! Do you think that about me?". "No, no, you look great", she said.

I told her she should check bras in that size next time she went shopping. She said that was something she didn't care about. I convinced her. "In my opinion, a D cup is not even big. Totally normal, mom". She then compared her reaction with some people that wear the wrong size of shoe because they don't want to feel like they have big feet. Which leaves me to the next question: Why would you won't care about your bra size? It's just as wearing an ill fitting shoe, and It can leave you to health problems. I don't even think we're in vanity territory here. It's basic stuff.

Anyway, even I am wearing the wrong size. I measured myself, 30 in under bust and 37.7 in the bust. According to this accurate calculator that I found, I should be wearing a 32F (That calculator goes through cups like this: A, B, C, D, DD, E, F, FF, G, GG, H, HH. It seems really realistic because I'm wearing a 34DDD and finding problems with it, when I bought them they were the best option in Macy's that I could find.

I blame the lingerie stores. Not all of them, but a lot, like Victoria's Secret, Maidenform, etc. Their measuring system is BAD. They do things like measure you above your bust, or add 4 inches to the band. They produce a narrow range of bra sizes so they just want to put you in what they have. I have had bad experiences there. Like going out of the dressing room with the bra the lady insisted was my size, a 34D. I asked, "really, do you think is my bra size?", with my boobs all squeezed up. That was rude, actually, but quite funny. The poor girl had nothing to do with it.

So, things short, I'm going to Nordstrom in a few days to see if I have luck finding a 32F. I've read that it is one of the few stores in the US that carries a wide range of bra sizes. I've never ordered a bra online, but after my experience in Nordstrom, maybe I'll try my luck in that area. Here we go.

I'm not against plastic surgery but I think things with people who got breast reduction could be different if they tried their right bra size first. Also if they tailored their clothing. I don't understand going under surgery to fit into certain shirt. Clothes are supposed to fit you, not you to fit the clothes. All body types are tricky, give a try of tailoring your clothes.

I say, measure yourself now! Find your true bra size and tell me how you felt in it. I know for experience and as a girl with big boobs, that proper fitting can boost your self-stime a lot. You'll look slimmer as you get a tinny waist, your boobs will look perkier (and even smaller if you got big ones), your back won't hurt, clothes will fit you better, and you will feel better.

Love,
Dixie
