I'm in my twenties and I do wear crop tops but always with a high waisted skirt underneath, which can be an a line, pencil skirt, long skirt etc. I show a little bit of skin or no skin at all. I think everyone can wear a crop top, no matter age or body shape. You just have to look for what works for you.
I wear them either tight or loose but with a soft fabric, so it has a drape and flow. I don't like boxy voluminous crop tops because I have big boobs and I don't like how they look on me, on someone medium or small chested it might work but I like to keep a balance between my top and bottom half. So tight or loose but with a soft fabric and drape works for me. I've never done it with high waisted pants, perhaps I haven't found the perfect pair!
Hope this helped

I love cropped tops. They have been my favourite trend this year. I own 2, have one on lay-by, and will probably add a couple more over summer. I wear them either layered over longer tops or worn with high waisted skirts or pants. I don't have a photo of the latter, but here are two worn layered.

Thanks Gigi. I already linked to Angie's blog at the top where she discusses wearing cropped tops with layers. (I don't feel comfortable showing skin, lol.) She's got great tips and inspiration pics, but I was looking to find "real life" pics, too, for my own inspiration.

I think the best way to wear them is like Diana posted in her celebrity picks: with just a sliver of midriff exposed. If you expose the belly button, that I think is where the look starts to look more youthful than you may want.

If the crop top is a little longer, you can sometimes create outfits where the skin is not exposed at all while you are standing still, but when you move around (put arms up, bend over), that is when some skin is exposed. I think Angie has mentioned this in her blog in the past, but I don't know where. Maybe do a search on her blog for "crop tops" for more ideas?

If you look at the Link Love for this week, there is a link to fashion bloggers' husbands' comments about the bloggers' outfits. A few of the outfits showed the sliver of midriff with a crop top.

When I wear crop tops myself, I try to pair them with high-waisted bottoms so that not too much stomach shows.

I wear them now over layered over a cami or blouse. But I'm getting a tummy tuck in 4 weeks, so maybe someday I'll be ok with letting a *tiny* bit of tummy show.

Hmm, I was thinking purely shirts, not sweaters. I would do the long blouse under a cropped sweater for sure. With a shirt I'd feel the cami is better suited. And on a daring day would go for the sliver of tummy. But to each her own!

Yes Denise, #6 in particular is great. I'm going to try to replicate that one, thanks! But 4, 5, and 8 are accessible/doable, too, I like them!

I am not comfortable exposing any skin just yet, so layering will be the way to go for me. Thanks everyone, these are some great ideas.

Here are some of my cropped top looks since this past January. I wear cropped tops with a loose fitting top underneath -- not a fitted cami. When the weather warms up, I wear my cropped tops with high waisted pants (skinny jeans, Mom or high waisted boyfriend jeans, culottes and harem pants).

Hope this helps.

Sorry, I haven't taken outfit photos in forever. I'm 47 and I wear cropped sleeveless tops over button front shirts, like the examples that Inge posted. In the winter, same thing with cropped long sleeved sweaters. I might try an unlayered crop top with a high waisted bottom for the weekend one of these days, but haven't experimented with that yet. I fear that I will feel silly and scrap that idea altogether.

Hopefully, Viva will chime in. She is over 40, and she wears them as layered pieces beautifully. So do several others on the forum, as you mentioned, but I can't think of who just at the moment. Oh! Rae wears them, too, though she's not over 40. I don't think that matters, though, especially once you see how she styles hers.

I have a cropped sweater that I knit myself. I wear with a longer underlayer (it's mesh, so needs an underlayer anyway) or over a dress. I am not a fan of exposing any part of my belly, no matter how small.

Besides which, I'm so short waisted that most storebought "crop" tops just look like regular tops that are a little too short on me!

ETA: I do think that the cropped two-piece dresses that show just a sliver of midriff are a nice look, but I would not personally be comfortable in them.

I haven't seen this in real life except on teenagers. After 2 kids, I'm not going to be rocking this look without a layer underneath! I could see doing it in a monochromatic kind of way, but generally speaking I'm shying away from this look because I find the extra horizontal line to be unflattering on my short frame.

I am seeing such great cropped top looks online and in the stores. But how do people wear this in real life? Especially if you're over 40, as I am?

I purchased a few cropped tops recently and need a little inspiration to be brave and wear them outside the house. Cropped tops in my area and peer group is very fashion forward.

I think I've seen a few WIWs over the summer with some looks, but if you
are enjoying this trend, could you repost your pics to this thread?

I'm adding some of the tops I've recently purchased. In particular, the anthro top is longer but with split sides, so easy to wear (AND on sale!!) and the Forever 21 waffle sweater is surprisingly cozy.

Thanks for the inspiration!
