I guess I'm an even split. My place is LOTS of color (no surprise there), and each room is a different color. But there aren't many items in the main rooms (one room is a spare room that always seems to get the placeholders so I am omitting that one). Often people comment how little is in the place, yet it is enough. I'm not a fan of clutter if I know I have to move and clean it. (There's no way I can stand and shift around each little statue to dust every month) My closet is the opposite, a big mess but I am striving to tidy and organize that too. But when you look at the actual items of clothing, again there is lots of color in there.

I'm afraid I'm both. Lots of clutter, have a hard time letting go of old papers, etc. BUT I haven't hung some of my curtains yet, I prefer mostly neutrals in the house instead of mostly colours... so I'm tepid?

I do think there is some truth to what you said bj1111. I am not sure what you mean by "cluttered" (my house is not dirty or piled with junk) but I do have books and pottery and 4 complete sets of dishes and lots of "things". But my home is where the kids all come to color Easter eggs and to bake brownies and watch DVDs while eating popcorn. I think my home feels more confortable then my friends who have a more stark or modern bent. One of my neighbors does not have a single item saved from her son's infancy. Her husband even tossed out her College Dipolma! I guess there are extremes on both sides but "warm" people might be a bit more "open" to people as well as material things.

there's a supposed relationship between personality and one's home, with the stereotypical cluttered home owned by warm people with engulfing personalities while the spare (or ordered) home owned by cool people with reserved personalities. does anyone find this to be (somewhat) true for themselves?

I like to think I'm pretty well balanced, but I probably tend towards the cool side. I have a lot of pops of color in my house, and am usually wearing several accessories. But when in doubt I tend to keep things simple rather than overdoing it, and I don't like clutter!

Wow - this is so interesting! I guess I am warm - veering into hot! I love "things". I collect too much and I do not hang "a" painting - I hang groupings of paintings. My tabletops are done as an assemblage. When we first moved into our neighborhood the children would line up at my door every holiday to see my house decorated for each occasion. I overdo it with my wardrobe too. Even I know I have too many shoes. I am making a true effort to "cool down" though. Just this morning I told my best friend that I am going to have my closet purged by the end of August - a fresh start for Fall. Kristine - I am going to read that book! Thank you for starting this conversation.

Visibly I'm a minimalist at home, but I have hidden pockets of clutter. So I'm cool with hot pockets.

I think I am a little too warm :-\

I am actually drawn toward minimalism in home decor, but in real life that is not the way my house is :-\

I wish I could cool things down in my closet!!

queenie - I admire your zero tolerance for clutter! I need someone to train me, or inspire me, or something. . . It is frustrating that I married a packrat and gave birth to three packrats. So in self defense, I have gotten better, but it does not come naturally and I am outnumbered. . .

What an interesting concept!
Based on this, I'd be a member of team Warm both in terms of my home and my closet. Just las weekend, actually, Corey embarked on a massive cull to rid our apartment of the clutter we'd accumulated over the past couple of years. It's still ongoing, but we're loving the results so far. Even though our preference is for a more minimalist approach, it never works out that way. I love fussing voer details like making sure carpets, couches and curtains all work together. I wish I had art for our one huge long wall. The same goes for my closet. I'm striving for a smaller wardrobe now, and YLF will help me achieve this, but there's no lack of selection in there at the moment.

Interesting queenie! I think in my house I'm overall well balanced also, but the book helped me see how I was creeping into too warm. My garden was way too warm. I was really into gardening for years so I had tons of plants everywhere. I cleared out a few and left some negative space and it was actually much nicer. Maybe as we work on an area it's the process of finding balance between warm and cool.

hmm, I think I'm just right actually...
in terms of my house I have zero tolerance for decorative clutter, but that doesn't mean I don't have carefully chosen and placed decorative pieces.
Now my wardrobe is a bit of a different story and if I had to choose I'd say I tend a bit more on the warm side as I'm always thinking 'just one more_______ and my wardrobe will be complete" BUT, then again my zero tolerance for clutter also keeps me constantly weeding out pieces that are no longer working for me.

I'm reading a book called Apartment Therapy. It's an eight week program to get your house in order. One of the ideas is that people fall under warm or cool. Warm people have too much clutter, too many things, an overload of color. Cool people don't have enough in their homes, not enough color, they might not hang curtains or buy flowers.

I thought this might carry over to fashion also. In some areas of my life I'm warm, but in fashion I'm cool. If I had a downfall when I started at YLF it was probably that I didn't pay enough attention to accessories or have a big enough wardrobe. I like things "clean lined and simple", but I have to be careful not to turn that into boring and predictable! I don't like clothes shopping (although I'm getting over that, ha ha). Strong colors don't usually resonate with me, but I'm learning that using them in small doses is a good way to wake up my neutral wardrobe.

Does the idea of warm or cool make sense in your own style evolution?
