It is funny how we question our own body image. I have a skinny pair I just ordered from a brand I like "Big Star" and am wondering a little to myself I they are "okay" because of my age. They are pretty fitted, more so than the other pair I bought which I realized later were actually "straight" but had some stretch too. I'm trying to decide if I should re-order the straights and return the skinnies. Either style would work with tucking into boots.

I hate second guessing myself too.

Viva, to answer your second set of questions:

1. Are you too old for skinnies? No. :-)
2. Perhaps you are hesitating because the term "sausage casing" sounds derogatory. But I at least didn't mean it that way. It's a humorous, descriptive term, but like a number of us have said, that style of skinny jean is really useful for tucking into tall boots. I don't think they will every truly go out of style now that we have the technology to make them stretchy enough that they're wearable (do you remember trying to stuff yourself into tight jeans in your teen years? What we wouldn't have given for a bit of lycra back then).
3. Can't answer the third question for you. You know your own weaknesses. I do know that I personally have bought quite a few failures on sale -- but that isn't always the case. I've had the the odd success. Ask yourself, 'would I buy these full price'?

Finally, are you excited about the pants? Are they flattering? if so, you may have your answer.

(Also -- is that true about the butt? Aargh. I'm not starting with much to begin with!)

I'm not necessarily buying them, but I am definitely still wearing them. I have loads of BF styles, but keep gravitating to the skinnies in the cooler weather. I'm like CocoLion, the skinnies keep me (relatively) honest. No joke. I agree that it's nice to mix in some structure. You do it well.

Everyone's replies are so helpful here. It's interesting what a range of opinion we have, and of course it confirms what I know in my fashion heart, that there will always be room for a range of denim styles, including skinnies.
I am still on the fence about these skinnies because some questions still nag at me:

-- Am I too old to wear these skinnies?
-- Are these the "sausage casing" skinnies that other people have given up, and if so, should I let them go?
-- Am I drawn to these because they are a premium brand on sale? (a classic hole for me to fall into)

Here's the thing. I do love slouchy pants and BF styles for their comfort and their boyish style, but sometimes I really crave structure -- and especially in the rear area (which I feel I've written a lot about lately!). At 51, I'm finding the butt is the first to go -- and I mean, really go, as in disappear. Good skinnies or fitted pants can provide some shape, while slouchy pants can look sloppy and add to the increasing sense of shapelessness that comes with age.

I'm going to try those pants on again before I decide for sure. Thanks all, and especially the pro-skinnies and the pro-high waisted skinnies who give me some courage to consider these jeans!

Yes! I left skinny jeans behind for boyfriends and other jeans but of late have come back. In 2012, I went crazy for boyfriend jeans because I was so sick of skinnies. I had just come off a major colored skinny jean buying spree, as well as printed/patterned. So I stopped buying skinnies for a while. Then I went on a novelty jean kick. Cross-over baggy crotch jeans, pajama jeans, Mom jeans. Now I'm back to skinnies but with a high rise. Less muffin top. Also, I purchased my most sausage-casing pair in September. The Rag & Bone high rise skinny in Heritage wash.

Skinny jeans keep me honest. If I wore boyfriends alone my weight would definitely creep up.

Love my AG stilts and have denim, white, black and grey. I never seem to tire of them and adore the fit. As for buying more....no....I feel I have enough right now. In saying that, I may change my mind if I spot AG's in an outstanding new shade.

I am not buying anymore bottoms! But skinnies will remain my wardrobe staples. Even the bodycon, comfortable stretchy but not sasauge casing ones. My legs are the better part of my body ... I don't do bodycon up top, so skinnies are really the only way I do bodycon :). It's a conventionally flattering style on me.

Not buying because I have enough, but I love wearing the ones I have. I have them in olive, grape, darkwash denim, and black brocade. The latter are very useful with silk tunic tops for work, worn with booties. The rest I love changing into when I come home, and I can tuck them into my Ugg boots for walking the dog (pre-approved by the Forum for the purpose).

I'm not going to buy more skinnies simply because I am out of money...I'm not buying more of anything! But if I had money for shopping, I wouldn't mind adding another pair or two. As others have pointed out, they're very practical since they allow you to wear knee-high boots and tuck the jeans. I also like how they balance out the fluid tops.

Not at the moment but this is because it is spring and I am not updating jeans right now.

I wear my one pair of skinnies (black and quite tight) a lot in winter and spring and summer. On me they need careful styling and are not my best silhouette but I find them perfect for rugby practices and games with waterproof boots, errands with black or camel ankle boots. I need a heel (small is fine) but don't love them on me with pumps or heeled sandals.

Absolutely! Just not skin tight skinniest. I love to tuck them into boots, and think they're the perfect replacement for leggings.

My fussy feet are now demanding more comfortable shoes. Apart from boots, I'm at a loss what to wear, as I can no longer wear anything with a high or narrow heel, and can't do flats.

Tough call.
After wearing them for years, I spent a good part of the summer in haram pants loungewear, and bought a pair of silky EF trousers, and my first pair of BF jeans (hopelessly baggy after one wear). When I went to put on my high-waisted skinnies today, they felt sooo tight and body con. I felt a bit uncomfortable, not only physically, but because I've got used to concealing my figure a bit. In the end, the jeans came off, and I ended up wearing a flowing dress, with black merino wool tights (very comfy) and black functional walking shoes. I'll keep the skinnies because they'll have their use in the dead of winter, but I don't see myself investing in another pair anytime soon.**

**Unless my 7FAM jeans get a hole. They're my only jean essential.

Yes, but I have been having doubt in my head the last few purchases. How much longer am I going to be attracted to skinny jeans with styles going the other direction? To my defense I spent the last two years looking for longer non-ankle/cropped length skinny jeans with no success. So when I found some this past month I kind of stocked up (jeans & cords). Granted I did not go for premium denim this time around. Something was telling me that I should wait and not invest in a possibly waning preference.

Yes. Because I have an apple belly, pants that fit in the waist always fit looser in the thighs and hips. So skinny jeans arent' a sausage casing fit, they are more a slim fit which is what I prefer. I just find it more flattering than than bagginess in the butt or leg.

I love my skinny jeans and just bought a white pair from BR last week. I find them great for tucking in my tall boots and for wearing with booties. I have boot cuts but I need to wear mine with a heel and find that I am always unhappy or uncomfortable with the way all my heels feel so I just don't wear them much. I am buying my skinnies larger especially the white ones as I don't enjoy the sausage look on my thighs. I would like to find some very narrow straight pants but think I will find the footwear thing a challenge with them.
PS. I wore my white jeans in winter for the first time last weekend with a cognac sweater and cognac boots !

Viva, I have those same J Crew jeans in black, and I love them! In fact I'm wearing them right this minute. They are so comfortable!
They do stretch out some, so be warned...

But, yes, I still wear skinnies. I've been wearing a lot of oversize tops, and the skinnies balance at the larger top silhouette. They're also great in the winter for wearing with boots, so I don't see myself giving them up any time soon.

For fall and winter, yes. They're a must for my casual, boot-friendly outfits in wet and cold weather.

I do have a pair of boot cut jeans in rotation, but the hems get so soggy and filthy in the rain that I tend to ignore them unless it's a dry day.

My two favourite pairs of skinnies are a bit more relaxed on the calf and I have one pair of tapered skinny jeans that I wear with tall boots.

Skinnies are a staple for me. So easy to tuck into boots.

Viva - I not only just bought the most divinely comfortable 1969 gap always skinny skimmer jeans but I duplicated them. I did buy them one size up, so they are in the relaxed skinnies/boyfriend skinnies - skimming/cigarette not tight but with a narrow ankle motif (I never have work tight jeans, if I'm going that route I'll wear leggings). I always wear booties and the jeans hit my ankle so they are perfect to roll, with boots or booties. I've wanted the perfect gray and black jeans for a long time. For me this is it. You just can't beat the versatility of the silhouette and I will be wearing them for a long, long time to come!!

I am very well stocked in straight legs, and still buying relaxed skinnies and tailored straight legs. Love them. Not doing body con skinnies ever again. EVER again.

Not buying them, because I'm very well stocked. But wearing the heck out of them.

Yes! I wear sausage-casing skinnies as a replacement for leggings. Looks great with a tunic. It actually feels like an upgrade from leggings. I usually wear them with boots. Not sure how I feel about wearing them without boots or a tunic but I guess I'll decide come spring. For now, they works so well with my Mom on the go style and in my biz casual environment.

Definitely. Baggy is too unstructured for the office. At least, for my office.
