Oscar Wilde said that "to define is to limit." Why define this? There are infinite ways to be cool and be perceived as cool.

Plus, it seems like the participants had to expand on a word that has so many usages...Saying "he's cool" could mean he's "attractive on some level" or it could mean he's "on good terms" with me. "Don't worry about him, man, he's cool." Or it could mean he's "distant" and not warm in personality. It doesn't really seem like the distinction was made during the interview process, so I don't see that the study proves much.

The funniest thing about the article is how obviously uncool it is to try to reduce coolness to a few factors. It is an art not a science dude! (Just rewatched The Big Lebowski on the plane because I am just that cool ;-0.)

This is funny. Just a few weeks ago, on two separate occasions, my husband was told by two very different "kids" that he and I were the "coolest" parents they knew (one of these kids is 13, a friend's son, the other 23, and a friend of my stepsons). And you know what, I guess we are. But we are totally goofy. My husband is a big kid. He has a blast, and he is generous with all our friends and family.

Coolness is funny to me. I was So. Not. Cool. as a kid. I was a geeky, unathletic, fairly shy kid. I know I'm way cooler now.

But I remember having a conversation about coolness many years ago, when I was still in my 20s. I had concluded that truly cool people don't care if they are perceived as cool. They're too busy being their true selves -- that is what makes them cool.

I used to be "cool" - but I'd rather be someone who commands respect, but isn't harsh - especially for my patients and the students who come through the system. I'm "cool" enough to cut them some slack, but not the resident who expects them to do zero work.

I think other kid's parents are often more "cool" than there own parents (in their eyes at least). Maybe because they see you in a different light. Fewer house rules? They don't feel as judged? You wear jeans and their mom wears track pants? It could be any of a few things. Back in my youth the "cool" parents would invite me for coffee and actually talk to me like a real person. Or maybe even let me have a 1/4 glass of wine at dinner. Or they could have had a great game room in the basement where they let us be kids and didn't intrude except to offer snacks.

You know, I don't agree with either definition of cool. I always thought the cool person was the one not watching others to see if they are cool or if they thought he or she was cool or not.

Hmmm. I would not claim to be cool in DD's eyes nor has that ever been my goal. I'm thinking of a couple of adults to whom she looks up:

#1: Many, many children, youth, and young adults seek her out and she has housed them when they feel they have nowhere else to go or have run away from home. She loves them completely and unconditionally and they know that. She is also wise (and has a master's degree in child development). DD says she is helpless to refuse any of this person's requests. DD is also friends with this person's daughters who regard their mom as most other offspring regard theirs: No big deal.

#2: A teacher whom DD didn't have, but one she's observed: A male African American who inspires otherwise underachieving boys to accomplish more than they ever thought they could and gains their respect, who knows their music and their moves, and has been gifted and offered many opportunities by his generous and richer friends. Apparently, this guy's demeanor is *cool*, lol.

I volunteer and work at my kids' school a lot, and most of the other kids think I am "cool"; they tell my kids that. My kids think that is hilarious, because they do NOT think I am cool at all. I would have to agree with my kids. I am not cool, nor have I ever really been or tried to be. I am at peace with my geekiness. Deb, no matter whether a parent is cool or not, it is GREAT to have the kids congregate at your home and to always know where your kids are and who they are with. We live out in the middle of nowhere and the kids love to bring their friends here. They spend most time outside. All I do is provide snacks and mostly leave them alone, but they think it is great.

As for the article, I agree with it. My kids use the word "cool" simply to mean "good" or something they like or approve of; there is no counter-culture association with it whatsoever.

But on the positive side, to my kids and their friends, drugs and smoking are NOT cool at all, nor is "irresponsible" behaviour in general. I hope to see that definition of cool last, at least a long as my kids are in school.

You know what I kept thinking, when reading about the study? I kept thinking, "I wonder how many cool people participated in this study?" As in, how many people actually revealed the secret of their coolness?

My ex-boss once guessed a girl's computer password. He did that sort of thing all the time. What was fascinating was that he succeeded in figuring all these things out, but his reasons were always completely off base. He never once succeeded in replicating, for example, the thought process behind a person's choice of password or, actually, constructing a proper syllogism. But he came to the right answer.

I don't think what it means to be cool has changed at all.

Also, if you're own kids think you're cool, I think a person should worry a little bit... maybe a lot

When my kids were growing up their friends thought I was cool, my kids thought I was weird and embarrassing. I did not care because our house was where they congregated and I knew most of the time what all of them were doing in their lives, friends included. It made me feel better because I knew they were somewhat safe. Who knew they did a study on coolness? This is an interesting article about the study.
