I'm not shiny - matte or velvety here. My skin is dry and I live in a very dry climate. In fact, I see very few people with shiny skin around here - maybe due to the extremely low humidity. My skin is shinier when we travel to locations with higher humidity (which usually makes me break out for a few days as my skin adjusts).

I have never thought of it this way before, but in reading through the answers I have realized that I am definitely a shiny person. I love silver and gold jewelry and prefer metallics as a neutral shoe.
I have had oily skin all my life which was a huge annoyance when I was younger and working full time because I could never get my makeup to stay on my skin for longer than a couple of hours. By lunch time it had disappeared. This may also have been a function of makeup technology back in the eighties!
I'm in need of long-lasting makeup at the moment and I think I have found a foundation that will work. However, it has been hard to get used to seeing myself with a matte face. To counteract the matte face I have gotten a wonderfully glossy lip gloss. I instantly felt more like myself when I added this lip gloss yesterday!

I don't know, I guess I'm a bit shiny? Despite the fact that my skin is getting drier, I still combat shine on my T-zone. I don't find it appealing in the least to see a photograph of myself with a shiny spot on my nose. My hair seems shinier some days than others, probably because it's color-treated and prone to frizz. I prefer lipstick and lipgloss that is moderately shiny -- I don't like extreme matte or extreme glossy looks on me, since I don't care to draw more attention to my lips anyway.

As far as my preferences for "shiny" in clothing and accessories, I love metallics but usually prefer to temper one shiny piece -- say, my silver tote or the metallic bomber jacket -- with other matte textures or subdued color in an outfit so the other items don't fight with the shiny piece. I also love fabrics with sheen like velvet, and of course the subtle sheen of leather too.

Oh I like velvet on me, same as corduroy. I do love this kind of texture, maybe I'm also more of a sheen vs. shine person. Same with metals, I like brushed silver, bronze and old gold jewellery, but not so much shiny metals.

Wow, I have never even thought about this before! I guess I am velvety (love that word!). I'm with Staysfit, I prefer sheen over shine. I have fairly dry skin and use moisturizer religiously but would say I still have more of a matte finish. I prefer darkened silver and bronze over gold, love velvet and corduroy. I like to think my hair is shiny but its natural texture makes it hard to tell. Very interesting conversation.

I think I'm mostly matte, but my nose and forehead get shiny. I like some shine but subtle in my clothes and jewelry. I would say sheen not shine. Does that mean velvet??? I like the words glow and sheen.

Team Velvet! And in keeping with what Suz says I was analyzed as an Autumn.
I am mostly matte or velvet with a bit of shine. Shiny hair, velvet skin with just a touch of shine and my lips are velvet with a small dose of shine. I prefer matte jewellery, clothing, stones, make up, etc.

I wear matte make up with just a small amount of shine on my lips. Glitter looks hideous on me.
I prefer amber over diamonds.
I like old gold and hammered silver jewellery.
I LOVE VELVET!!!!!!!

My hair use to be very shiny and neat. No need for shine products on my hair. If I teased my hair to make it look a little wilder within minutes the teasing would come out and my hair would be all neat again. I can go days without brushing my hair and it looks neat. I have made peace with my neat hair.

My face is shiny, hair not so much because of the hair structure. Your comment about make up made me realise that my problem with unnatural looking lipsticks might not be that no color suits me but that they are never shiny enough... Food for thought. I go bare faced, so I have no idea about powders or whatever.

Combo skin. Hair used to be super shiny and still is if air dried but heat tools and straightening suck it out. I actually like matte lipstick on and occasionally like a matte face with powder but I look best dewy. I do wear both shimmery and matte eyeshadows equally, though.
As for jewelry and metallics, I am down with shine and matte/texture.

I am pretty shiny, especially my forehead. My cheeks are maybe more on the satiny side. I have to be careful with oily moisturizers, because they will make my skin feel greasy all day--they don't seem to soak in if I use even a tiny bit too much.

The timing of your question is good! I have been wearing mineral makeup (powder foundation), and I haven't been noticing shine. But I took a few days' break recently and went makeup free, and the shine has returned. So now I know what the mineral foundation is doing for me.

In general, I enjoy shiny things--coated jeans, metallic shoes, etc. But I tend to gravitate toward those more when my hair is straighter and sleeker, as opposed to when it is a little wavier. When it's wavier, I am more prone to choose textured fabrics.

I have oily skin which becomes shinier as the day goes on. Thank goodness for oil blotting tissues! I do like shiny makeup (I've never cared for the way matte lipstick looks on me), but as far as clothes and accessories are concerned, I prefer a more matte look.

This is sort of blowing my mind. My skin has always been very shiny, not in a good way, and I have spent most of my life fighting it. My hair is not so much shiny but now is sparkly - only since I stop dying it. For years it was dry as straw. Hmm, this might be a huge aha moment for me.

My skin is shiny too so I do find shimmery makeup works best although I go for matte powder and stay away from bronzer. I also like shiny accessories.

Clothes wise though I stay away from shine and sparkle. I can't pull it off. Shiny fabrics like satin emphasizes my bust and lumps in the worst way. And those wet look leggings make my legs look really wide. The one time I did look amazing though was at my wedding when I had an amazing purple silk charmeuse gown custom made and it draped beautifully. I do think some silks have a subtle sheen that can be really wearable though.

My skin is incredibly oily, so shine is a daily occurrence, no matter how much powder I might apply. I do try to keep the shine down, though, and have found that the brown paper towels often found in public restrooms often help with that. Even so, though, it is a losing battle. I'd prefer matte skin, but that is impossible for me; even anti-shine gels or primers don't work for me.

I love sparkly items and metallics, but I prefer a matte look for my skin. For lip products I lean more toward semi-matte or cream rather than really shiny.

But skinwise I used to be super shiny (and hated it) until a few years ago when I changed my skin-care process to not be so drying. I saw that in trying to get rid of the oil, my skin just overproduced it to compensate. I had to blot and repowder several times a day. Summers were awful. Now I remove makeup and also "cleanse" with just extra-virgin olive oil and facecloth. MUCH better.

I use powder over a very light layer of foundation. I've tried leaving a little shine, but I just don't like the way it looks on me.

Can I be satiny? My hair has always been glossy and I like a dewy lipgloss, but I can't quite embrace shiny or sparkly.

It took years for my oily skin to normalize. My makeup starts out matte but gets a little shiny after a few hours. It used to be an oil slick, though. I think the skin care products I use make a huge difference. I've learned to be gentle, as I've had some very bad reactions to Retin A and other problematic ingredients.

Shiny. My skin is less oily than it used to be but sun block makes it shiny. Any powder settles in lines and looks terrible. I try to keep my hair shiny and use Aquaphor under lipstick although in the past couple of years lip gloss has started looking ridiculous.

Smittie, that's GREAT, and quite the relief I bet. I actually have dry skin too, but it has normalized beautifully with the right care (which took YEARS to get right - my word). I use Caudalie skin care products now, which work really well. I moisturize heavily. I don't touch retinol and alpha hydroxy acids, which dry and have ruined my sensitive skin before. I don't cleanse in the morning, never go in the sun with a bare face, wear sunscreen daily no matter what, and use tinted moisturizer (no foundation). My skin LOVES humid weather. I need to move to Florida.

I'm matte, except on certain warm, humid Summer days when I can achieve a dewy look. From September to June, I'm very pale, velvety at best, dry at worst, and adding shine just makes me look ill.

When I saw the title of this post, I thought it was a wardrobe question. Interesting, because I'm definitely for matte/velvety clothing, too, with very small touches of shine. Super-shiny satins and patent leathers make me look, well--ill.

Interesting question and I like Suz' analysis ... I think I am more velvety, with perhaps a small touch of shine here or there. Funny as I finally broke down and got an in person color analysis done and was found to be a "velvety" soft summer (the deeper variety). So I think Suz might be on to something there!

@Angie-I did solve the water/skin allergy problem.
The issue was incredibly dry skin where regular moisturizer was not enough. Sunscreens exacerbate the problem because they're so drying.

I now use Eucerin original formula and Cerave for washing, both twice daily. (The same products you use.) Sunscreen daily. But I need a thick coating of moisturizer on before applying the sunscreen.

I'm pretty shiny in the morning and at night but it wears off!
