I LOVE both of these bags. I love bags fullstop. I have no idea if mine are dated or not. I'm hoping YLF ladies will let me know if I'm off the mark. Not that I watched her much, but I did catch an Oprah show where she stated it doesn't matter what size you are, a bag will always fit.

I definitely agree that it's tough to say what dates a bag, and it sure isn't color! I have two yellow bags that I love - one has been going strong for 5 years now. I tend to view handbags as works of art - a beautiful design will be beautiful no matter what the year, be it a classic piece or a modern piece. The one thing that comes to mind to date a bag would be too many trends combined - e.g. a huge, oversized, leopard print bag, covered in rhinestones and studs, with a large tassel will date faster than a simple, classic bowling bag. Throw low quality in there, and it will date even faster.

Absolutely, Ana. Some handbags, particularly those from the early and mid '90s look dated to my eye. Yet bags older than that can look 100% stylish. It's a combination of things for sure. Bad workmanship, a particular silhouette, and design details. It's hard to put it into words, isn't it?

Angie, I would love to know the answer to that question! : ) I can't really think of anything in particular that dates a handbag. Some seasons seem to feature certain elements more than others: studs, fringe, etc. and sometimes I think that can make a bag seem dated, but not always. Maybe if it's combined with a trendy shape? Or combined with poor workmanship, as you suggest. I don't know but some bags do look dated, right?

A colour cannot date a bag! Just last week I had my eye on a brand new bright yellow Chanel Bag. I fainted at the style - and price.

I'm also not sure that studs date a bag either. I have a 12 year old studded Prada bag that still looks stylish to my eye.

Hmmm. What is it about a handbag that makes it look dated? I'd say poor workmanship for sure.

I'm not sure that color really dates a bag, especially if it goes with a lot of items you wear. I think ClearlyClaire's post was really good. I imagine details like studs or the shape might date, but even that seems like a guideline rather than a rule. I love yellow bags. I just asked for one for Christmas.

I hope not--I bought a yellow cross-body bag last spring after being inspired by a YLF poster. It is a soft yellow, so I haven't used it as much lately--but why not cheer up one of the foggy winter mornings?

Most of my wardrobe is black, white, grey, blue denim, green, and aqua blue, with some bits of red. At the moment it's really mostly junk that I haven't weeded out or replaced yet, so I'm not necessarily all that attached to anything.

I have one (cheap quality) winter coat in bright red and a dark burgundy trench coat, but my nice quality wool coats are black or grey. I have a million scarves, too, so I'm sure to have at least one to coordinate!

I don't think a color you love ever dates. Pick the one you like the best and that will go with most of your things (or clashes happily with them). Those are both nice bags that you turned up. Good job!

I have a bag in the same green as the one you are showing us, and I love it! It acts like a pseudo-neutral and really brightens up a winter neutral look. And I love the yellow one, too!

Pick the bag that makes you smile. I don't think yellow bags are dated at all. There aren't that many people who are carrying them. Of the bags you posted I like the yellow best because of the shape. Both colors are great so it depends on your wardrobe, especially coats.

Yet more ebay trawling has turned up some cute bag possibilities. Normally I'm not all that thrilled by yellow, but I thought this one seemed kinda cute. The green one is a bit out of my usual range, too, but I thought it might be nice to have something a little bit different for a change. Almost all of my bags are black or red, and big enough to lug a bunch of books around. It might be nice to have something a bit smaller and more colorful.
