I personally don't like the look of a tulip skirt on me, as my body leans more toward a pear and it feel like too much volume on the bottom. I have a girlfriend that leans more toward hourglass although she also shares the attributes of a pear- but tulip skirts look great on her!

im totally confused! just thought i'd chime in...

tulip skirt: probably works best on rectangles. depends on how hippy the pear is, though.

trumpet skirt: i think these work on most shapes. i have one, which is my answer to the pencil skirt. it doesn't taper in too much before the flare. i'm thinking if it's not too tight, trumpet skirts can work on pretty much anyone.

That's it - I mixed up tulip skirt and trumpet skirt. I'm actually not convinced that a trumpet skirt is a good style for a pear shape, but I'm sure you ladies can prove me wrong, and I have to say I feel like I'm on very shaky ground here. But doesn't a "strict" trumpet skirt fit very snugly around the hips and then go in before it flares out again at the bottom? I'd think that a pear would want to avoid the tapering below the hips. But maybe I'm off. It's time for Angie to chime in and give us the expert advice?
http://www.sierratradingpost.c.....Women.html

(Oh, and now I also don't trust my stance on tulip skirts anymore. Maybe you ladies are right in that they'd add volume to the hips. Not sure. Personally I have doubts about the tulip style working well for most women; it seems a hard shape to work with.)

Confused...

Interesting, I thought a slim skirt with a flare at the bottom was a tulip skirt as well.

Referring tthe skirt that Plushpenguin posted, I think you would have to try on different skirts to find one that had the right amount of volume in the hip area. I'm sure there are some that will skim over the hips in a more flattering way.

Antje I googled tulip skirts too and found one like you initially described

http://www.fasshonaburu.com/20.....skirt.html
I think that is normally called a trumpet skirt, Hope that is ok for pears since I have one (have posted pics a few times)
But the majority of images were like this http://images.google.com/imgre.....n%26sa%3DN

phew what a long link! I think those ones would look terrible on pear shapes.(and anyone who isn't very thin and slim hipped) I agree with Maya!

Kim Kardashian has a very typical Middle Eastern/Armenian body type: short with a big butt (I'm allowed to say that because I too have the same issue :p)

(proof that I'm not making this up: http://hubpages.com/hub/Fashio....._Big_Booty)

Anyway, to answer your question, after Google image searching tulip skirts, I'm wondering if Antje and I are seeing the same thing. These look like the absolute opposite of what I would consider flattering for a pear:

http://images.google.com/image.....038;tab=wi

They all seem like they have a lot of fabric around the hips, which I imagine is what pears want to avoid.

Wow, I just searched for "tulip skirt" as well and found all kinds of different styles, none of which were what I expected. I think I was wrong and thought of a style that must have a different name (I was thinking of a skirt that's tight around hips and butt, like a pencil skirt, but that then flares out just at the bottom.) The ones I found as tulip seem like they would be good on a pear shape. So I stand totally corrected and take back my initial response!

Btw, I actually sorta feel like Beyonce or J-lo probably would look good in it, but not a more unbalanced shape, like mine or Kim Kardashian lol.

It seems like their a lot of variations of the tulip skirt. This is what I think of when I hear "tulip skirt": http://www.bluefly.com/Alvin-V.....-209888000 I doubt I would look good in it, but I could be wrong. Would a Beyonce type look good in it? I'm just wondering why so many people recommend this look for pears. What's the reasoning?

I'm an hourglass, but share the wide hips and butt with many pears. I do not think that a tulip skirt is a good style for us wide-hipped gals, as it emphasizes that area. My hunch is that it's better on someone with a slim hip/butt/thigh shape.

I've heard over and over that they are, but they're fairly rare, so I never actually tried any on. They don't really seem like they'd work, but I'm not sure. Since "Pear" can mean anything from a girl with a really small bust and shoulders and huge hips (like me), to a busty, bottom heavy hourglass like J-lo or Beyonce, I'm not sure which type of "pear" would look good in one. What do you think?
