Mine have no back strap, just two straps across the foot. They make my legs look a little thinner (not a good thing) but the comfort factor outweighs that. Having only two straps reduces the clunky look in my opinion. They do not look dated to me. I think your question may reflect your style aspiration more than any datedness of this sandal. Personally I have been trying to move away from more rounded toes to a little more taper, or I would wear it myself. But that's just me--and it may be you, or where you're headed as well.
