I have seen a number of reviews of denims (mostly super-stretchy high-polyester types) with this complaint, and none said the smell faded over time, no matter what methods were tried. A strong chemical smell would be a cause for concern for me because, besides being unpleasant, having such chemicals so close to the skin seems potentially dangerous. Many of the countries where these garments are made and dyed (China in particular) are extremely lax about regulations on toxicity.

I had a black denim skirt that had that smell. I ended up donating it. A textiles scientist at our local university told me that black dyes are unstable, so other chemicals are added to stabilize them and the smell is permanent. I actually sniff clothing now before purchasing to avoid this from recurring. I also have learned to never buy denim with a high polyester content because they feel hot when I wear them, tend to bag out and worst of all, they are lint and pet fur magnets. You may have a different outcome but for me, polyester denim is a no go. I also hate tencel, too.

I don't have the problem but I just read that Debbie over at Recovering Shopaholic ruined a denim jacket that did have that smell and had to throw it out but now knows a better way. You could email her and ask what does work without ruining the garment.
http://recoveringshopaholic.com/

I will give them a good vinegar dose and if not, I will have to pass them on. The smell really annoys me alas. I will report back.

I really was not sure what you meant when I read your title. After all, I spent my younger years in the 60's and 70's and cannot tell you how many people I knew that refused to wash their jeans. I live close to San Francisco. Anyway, I purchased a Top Shop top from Nordstrom and could not get the smell out and ended up returning it.

Hmmm, I have never experienced that with jeans or anything polyester. But I double the vinegar suggestion. I use it all the time for our clothes. Good luck !

IME the dye is the most likely culprit. Ive had it with dark blue and black denims. I've not had much luck getting that smell out unfortunately.

Thanks everyone... BTW they came with that smell so don't know if its the denim dye or the polyester and elastane in the denim. I did just look and the jeans are 14% polyester - yik.... has anyone else had this with jeans?

Activated charcoal? Seems to be the be-all, end-all of odor removal. I think it takes some time, though.

Never tried it on jeans, but old-fashioned washing soda works great to deodorize sweaty gym clothes.

Vinegar usually works well for eliminating odor. Another possibility would be oxy powder? It works well on a lot of things so maybe would work.

I have experienced that and eventually it just aged out from washing and wearing. But if it happens again, I would try a long soak in vinegar water. I don't know if that would do the trick but it has helped when I've been given clothing with heavily fragranced laundry detergent smells. Good luck! I can't stand stinky clothes...

Angie, I started doing a wardrobe edit and something up for consideration are fairly new old navy jeans... which have a strong petrochemical smell even after several washes, hanging in the sun etc. Has anyone else found this with jeans and is it fixable.... Thanks!
