I don't have any skinny jeans left, but I do have a couple of new pairs of very slim straights (tapered, actually) that I enjoy wearing. They are like what I used to think of as "my" skinnies, before I bit the bullet and got on board with the calf-sucking skinny-jean trend. I did like to wear those tighter ones, with tunics and long cardigans and tall boots over them. Now I like wearing the very slim but not super-tight ones again, with just about anything. I am pretty much off tunics and long cardigans for now.

It sounds like the ones you have are versatile and fit well, so if you've got the space, they're probably worth hanging onto, since it can be hard to find the right fit.

Dee, I was a skinny jean devotee and now I don't wear them at all ... I ve transitioned to straight, flare/boot, and wide legs. I do have a slim straight pair of black dress pants for work, and I kept one slimmer pair of jeans but I don't really wear them.

I am a believer is wear what you love, and with younger fashionistas wearing skinnies, there are ways to take style inspiration that feel fresher, if that's something you care about! If you have the room, I might pick your favorite few pairs and tuck them away until inspiration strikes. But also, if you feel you're over then, that's okay too! Fashion isn't static and neither are our style preferences

I have given up on skinny jeggings (as Angie pointed out the differences above). However, I still have skinny straights, see my Find below. They remind me of cigarette pants somehow--only denim. Clean, a bit 1950s, yet still modern. They are not jeggings or uber stretchy skinny legging type jeans from the last 5-10 years. However, they are slim compared to the very baggy and wide leg styles right now.

A slim straight leg is still one of my most flattering leg shapes. And I tend to balance volume on top with sleeker bottoms.

cjh- Yes, skinnies are not always very forgiving to any shifts in weight.
RobinF- Ha, I waited so long buying my slims that I only had them for about a year or two before the trends started shifting to a wider silhouette.
Joy- Always a challenge getting pants to fit right after any weight fluctuations, hopefully you can find some pull on jeans that you’ll like.
Suz- Yes, I never went to full on skinnies, slim was a close as I got and weather conditions definitely are a factor with my choice of jeans.
Jules- Yes, tall riding boots do work perfect with the skinnies, too funny about whether you’ll every get those pants back from your daughter now.
Pirouette- true, it does seem like mostly younger people wearing the wider jeans, but I am slowly seeing a shift to at least a looser fit even on some people who are little older. I too, still love my boyfriend jeans.

I never wore real skinny jeans. But I continue to wear boyfriend and slim jeans. I haven’t found any wide jeans either cropped or full length that I like. I realise that the wider jeans are on trend at the moment and look great on others. I have noticed an age divide between older and younger women where I live with the younger girls wearing wide jeans and older wearing slim or straight legs. I dislike high rise as I am very short and I find most wide legs have high waists. I think if you like the jeans you have hang on to them and wear what you feel good in.

I have a couple of old pairs of true skinny jeans in my closet that I kept to possibly wear under dresses this winter (so like leggings), but it didn’t happen. I do still buy slim straights: cords, jeans and a velvet pair which I wear in deep winter for practical reasons. I would have said no more true skinnies ever - except for I see riding boots are trending, and I already have a chocolate brown pair bought between trend cycles. On the other hand I did ‘lend’ them to my out of town college-aged daughter before I realized they were coming back in so I may never get those back! She’s laughing all the way to the thrift store that she got my boots before I realized.

Great discussion. I don't own any skinnies but I did enjoy them (or at least some versions of them). My slimmest jeans now are a pair of slim BF jeans, which I still adore as a style but wear mostly for around the house stuff at the moment.

Like Angie, I enjoy slim straight trousers (cigarette pants) more than slim jeans. But I'd wear slim (not skinny) jeans again really easily, I think -- since the style always appeals to me. (Skinnies less so because I don't care for that much stretch in my pants.)

I agree with those who say full length wide legs are impractical for wet weather. But the newer lengths and crops work well. This would not be too great in a colder climate than mine, though. I found wide crops too chilly to wear in winter back east, at least without insulating long johns they were. So I fully understand the practical reasons to wear slim pants of any kind in winter!

I still have skinny jeans in my closet and wear them some but am more likely to wear trousers. The sunniest predate my wider jeans and fit better after weight loss. Any new jeans must have wide legs. I don't get out shopping much and then must try on every thing. I wonder if my old short jeans still fit. I doubt it. All my summer jeans will be wider. I can not find new pull on jeans in colors in small sizes.

It's funny, in stores I still see racks and racks of skinny jeans. They don't interest me any more. Because I have to size up for my waist, skinny was never all that skinny on me but still too tight for what I want these days. I would love some wider legs but haven't found any that work for me. I'm so behind the times that probably by the time I do, they will be back out :)

Janet- You are so right, skinny jeans were so dominant and there was rarely anything else on offer, that’s when I also finally succumbed but it took years to find a pair of slims that satisfied me.
Sal- Yes, for many skinny/slims still feel just right for them, so no need to change jean silhouettes.
RachelNZ- University can be formative years for figuring out our style but its also a challenge branching out to something new and different just when you thought you had it all sorted.
Jenni NZ- I think I’ve worn the whole gambit of jean styles over the decades. Wide legs and flares in the 70s and 80s, mom type jeans in 90s and 2000s, but the skinnies/slim just took over in the 2010s and there wasn’t much else to really choose from. I’m really happy that we now have a large variety of pant silhouettes we can wear
Star- I did get used to the slimmer jeans eventually, but in the last year or two there’s been a big pivot to looser fit, and that’s my preference now. Too bad about your vintage flare jeans, its hard to know when a style will suddenly make a resurgence again,

My true skinnies all went away. Sadly I gained five pounds over the three years of Covid and a hamstring injury, so that was a big factor in donating them all. Five pounds often doesn’t make much difference, but in those jeans, it really did.

Happily, I’ve always loved the loose straights and wider legs (I was a teen and college student in the early 70s, Jenni!), and found some great fitting ones at Old Navy and JCPenney, at good prices over the last couple of years.

I have a black pair that are more slim than skinny that I wear very happily. I have one pair of true skinnies that do not fit currently but they are staying in my closet. I like the wash and, of course intend to fit in them some time ;). I prefer a slimmer leg though in general. Currently wearing Levis 521's mostly. The same ones that I asked Angie's opinion on. I still was not convinced but suddenly am enjoying the looser fit. I hacked a pair of vintage levies flares/boot cuts into shorts and now regret it as that particular silhouette is suddenly more trendy. I very rarely have regrets but I had to edit them out of my closet after the hack as I am off shorts. I see you have decided to hang on to your and I think that is wise considering you don't actually dislike them.

I don’t wear skinny jeans as such, not since the 80s I think. My only pair of jeans (white) are probably straights. But I wear slim pants nearly all the time. Finally succumbed to one pair wide legs (ponte pants) only last year. I don’t think I will ever be a convert to wide legs.
I wonder if there is anything in the theory that you might have a soft spot or go back to the styles of your early 20s? That was the early 80s for me. I had those stretch stirrup jeans.
That was a great decade before the responsibility of 3 children in the 90s.

I still have a pair of properly skinny jeans which I wear with boots in winter plus have some slim sateen pants which are also probably considered a skinny style by others.

I found it really hard to broaden out from them as they became really dominant just as I went to university so all of my adult styling years had been based around that style. Like others, many people I know continue to wear skinny/slim jeans exclusively.

I still have one pair, somewhere between a skinny and a straight. I am wearing them today for the first time in 2025 with an oversized shirt (will take a WIW soon).

I never loved skinny jeans but for a time they were so dominant that I could barely find anything else in denim, so I succumbed to trend. Now when I try to put on any jeans that touch my calves, I have an almost visceral desire to yank them off!

I have one pair of slim jeans left — my washed black moto jeans from Peruvian Connectipn. They are a little snug at the moment but I’ll keep them because they’re such a specific style they feel a bit more like me. But otherwise I think I’m done with skinnies for good. I enjoy my wide, bootcut, and loose boyfriend jeans too much!

Slim cat- I agree there’s no point in keeping something that doesn’t make you feel great wearing them.
Brooklyn- Skinny velvet to lounge around in does sounds very luxe and decadent indeed.
Angie- I too remember how slim jeans just became skinnier and stretchier as the years passed. My jeans are not true skinnies, just a slim fit. I also liked how Lisa’s slim jeans looked in that post too. It gave me pause for thought.
Ophelia- Yep, skinny jeans in hot weather doesn’t work for me either and figuring out sizing is always a challenge.
Jaime- You’re right, many have never stopped wearing skinny jeans despite the trend towards wider styles.

I never actually wore skinny jeans. Mine were slim straight and I have one pair still. I will reassess their fit sometime in May and decide if want to keep them. But they are 8 years old so maybe it’s time.
I believe we should wear what makes us feel fab. I don’t wear skinnies or full length wide or flared jeans because I don’t like them on me.

I enjoy all styles of jeans and have a wide variety represented in my wardrobe.

I only wore my skinnies once this past winter season, but I really enjoyed them with my knee high boots. You can see the outfit Angie mentioned in my WIW post WIW - Keeping It Simple (outfit #4-#6).

I'll admit my wide legs and bootcuts with scrunch are currently in heavier rotation than slim, straight, or skinnies at the moment. But I know my preferences will change over time and I'll reach for skinnies again when I want a change of pace.

My skinny jeans fit, are in good condition, and are comfortable. It was not easy to find a pair that checked all the boxes for me. Plus, I have room in my closet to store them and I'm fine if they aren't worn often, I don't mind having a larger sized wardrobe. I also really enjoyed when I did wear my skinnies this season. For all these reasons I'll continue to keep mine for now.

Interesting question Dee! I have been contemplating the undeniable truth that very many women around me still wear stretchy skinnies. Not because they are "back" but because they never left them. Which leaves me wondering how they ever switched to them in the first place. Younger women tend to wear wide legs and baggy jeans.
Anyhow, I am definitely wearing slim jeans but not stretchy skinny jeans these days and would hold onto and wear yours whenever you feel like it .

I’d keep them if I weren’t me, lol.
If you like them & they work for your purposes & climate, & you enjoy wearing them of course, hang on to them!
Personally I don’t ever intend to put on another pair as long as I’m living in the brutally hot, humid location where I seem to be stuck.
They’re still selling though. Interestingly, I’ve seen loose, all cotton, low rise jeans in juniors departments. Those are my dream jeans. I’d buy some but don’t have enough motivation to figure out the sizing again.
I’ve also noticed the price of clothing continues to climb. If I find any packed away, I’d keep them for that reason alone, if only it wasn’t sweaty, sticky torture to wear them.

I remember when skinnies were ALL the rage, Dee. 20 years ago. And low rise too.

BUT!!!! To be accurate, they were more like slim straights back then - not skinnies like we know them today that are skin tight like leggings with higher rises. Skinnies became tighter, stretchier and skinnier as the years went by (to compete with leggings).

To answer your question, no skinnies in my wardrobe! Not for 9 years. Don't want to go back - for now. Not even for the equestrian look as a horsey-person. Yet, never say never ;) - I see that Lisa sported that look recently and I loved it all over again. Soooooo, the jury is out.

I've tried on many slim straight jeans this year. They are skinnies to me. Thought that was how I wanted to evolve my denim look. It's not! I kept taking them off and feeling unhappy in the look.

I DO wear slim straight tailored pants - and never stopped doing that. Have a few old styles that work well. I prefer RELAXED straights though!

I have a lot of wet weather to contend with in Seattle. Soggy hems are no fun with slouchy wide legs and long flares (I wear those in dry weather). The wet weather problem I solve by wearing: wide crops, wide legs at the shorter full length, relaxed straights, cuffed looks, and barrel jeans. Sorted!

I was never a huge fan of skinny or slim jeans on me. I much prefer slouchier and flared styles. But slouchy jeans and flares are not very practical for wet weather. So I still have one pair of boyfriend jeans (they fit me like slim jeans) that I wear in wet weather. I also have 2 pairs of velvet slim jeans that I wear as loungewear at home in winter. Wearing velvet at home feels very decadent.

My slim straight jeans only used in cold/rainy weather - otherwise I'm in wide leg jeans or relaxed straight . Of course CA climate is mild and wide leg jeans are more comfortable and easy to wear.
The lightest blue straight leg jeans got donated last edit since I don't feel great in them anymore ( they were from Lucky Brand Sweet mid rise ).

Runcarla- I also like wearing my Levis 501 straight legs too, although slimmer than a baggy fit, they definitely aren’t as skinny/slim as the ones I have in my holding zone. Those fit right around my calf.
The weather really plays a part in the type of jeans I wear too. I won’t t wear my wide leg jeans when its cold and slushy outside, but straights and slim/skinnies are quite practical for those types of conditions.

Not only should you keep them - you should wear them! They have already moved through the in-out cycle, and are back!

My favourite jeans are high rise straight/slims (Finds #1), but I like my baggy ‘mom’ jeans too. I have one pair of wide legs. They are more of a ‘fashion’ item and worn the least.

Remember when skinny jeans were all the rage? It took me years before I finally bought my first pair. However, now that pant styles seem to be a bit looser and wider these days, and I'm wondering if it's worth holding on to the last couple of pairs of slim jeans/cords that I still have?

I'm not actually feeling the need to wear them right now, but they still fit me fine and aren't actually that old. I enjoy wearing my straight-leg baggy jeans the most right now, but I could potentially end up wearing them more if style trends change.

What about you? Do you still have skinny/slim jeans in your wardrobe?
