It must been too specific a question. There must some place online where they talk about subtle trends like this. Probably more with people who are designers.

Does anyone have any ideas of blogs or sites where I could look?

I've been trying to search for an answer on this and am just getting nowhere. Someone must be discussing it. I just can't get the right search phrase.

I remember back in the late 80s and early 90s when I (as a teen) wouldn't wear some button-downs because the collars were the width of several years before, rather than the newer, narrower width. I'm sure they're still cycling back and forth, like everything else!

What got me to thinking about this was a suede jacket I'd loved and worn a lot for a while. Then last spring when I was changing over my closet I realized I'd hardly worn it the last winter. I was about to give it away when I ran across this jacket at Ralph Lauren.
http://www.ralphlauren.com/pro.....Id=4328760

It's at a much higher price even on sale than I would want to pay and I have other jackets to wear now. But looking at it I tried to figure out why it looks so great and my old jacket just didn't look right anymore. They are both zippered. Mine was a little shorter but not dramatically. Then I realized it was the collar. My jacket's much wider collar looked outdated.

These little changes must sneak up on us. But my thought is if I could predict how things will change it would help me in buying basics like pants, jackets and shirts that would last longer.

I can't wait to see Angie's feedback on this, simply because I'd never thought of it. Great question!

When I buy something like a basic white button front shirt I want it to last a while. I usually get Lauren or Foxcrot but I got a shirt at a local boutique in the spring. I'm finding that one just doesn't feel right to me so tonight after thinking about it and not going to sleep I got up to measure the width of all my collars. I found the RL are the narrowest, then Foxcroft but the blouse I got locally has a much wider collar.

How do you know what to buy so it will last a few years, be classic in a sense? For example collar width seems to be going narrower. Are there other things I should watch for?
