KK - I don't know what size you are but the LL Bean flannels do come in a "slightly fitted" version. This is fairly new; when I bought my last one several years ago, they only came in "relaxed fit" but I went down one size from what I usually take and it fits perfectly. And if you need smaller all over, they do petite sizing as well.

I'm 17 and I love plaid! No idea if it's "in style" or whatever - I don't really pay attention to that sort of thing. I just wear what I like that I look nice in. Also I'm from North America so I don't know if that makes a difference.

I actually plan to ask for a plaid shirt or two for Christmas this year! Only problem is I can't find one that's fitted nicely - it seems like all of them are relaxed and baggy, which looks really bad on me. Anybody know where to find a semi-fitted plaid shirt? That comes in petites? I was looking at L.L.Bean and Duluth Trading Co. - theirs seem nice.

Thanks for the input texstyle. I also love plaid and am a fan of Talbots, so you can imagine...

I find however there are two types of plaid: the more New-England-ish preppy plaid, like the ones found on cachemere scarves, Talbots and H&M stores, wool jackets and skirts, and the very casual, relaxed, unceremonious lumberjack type found on flannel shirts, Jack&Jones stores, some bedcovers and some traditional, iconic Canadian jackets. Both types seem to fall under the appellation "tartan" although I would say the first kind is closer to "madras" and the second to "check plaid".

I find I prefer the preppy plaid worn on its own, against other pure classic colors such as green, red, navy... so it stands out. Whereas I would wear the grungy check plaif in combo with another grungy-inspired item, such as: a turtleneck under the shirt, worn out denim, heavier lace-up midcalf boots, oversized grey or cream colour wool socks...

What do you guys think?

Love plaid for myself and I'm usually not big on patterns - I find plaid to be mostly casual, outdoorsy, classic casual. I have at least 3 plaid shirts I like to wear in cool weather and a couple summer weight like linen gauze I wear during warm weather.

La Ped, you couldn't have nailed it better as for my son. He currently lives and work in another country so his distaste of plaid may be because it feels too Canadian to him, and he wants to belong where his current life is. It's just that the way he threw out all of his plaid shirts made me think of me when I discard something I think is not trendy anymore.

I remember going "off" a lot of my favourite things as a teen/young adult. And that included striped tops and flannel shirts and some other things were too strongly associated with the New England prep culture I grew up around. Basically, if LLBean stocked a version of it, I wouldn't wear it. I got over that, obviously, but really it took moving to different parts of the world where those looks weren't Native Wear (as Rachylou would say).

Perhaps plaid just feels too (stereo)typically Canadian to your son at the moment. I know my husband, who's from New Brunswick, looked at me like I was crazy when I told him flannel was "in" a few years ago. Most of his NB friends call his flannel shirts his "grandpa shirts" -- they're all science/tech guys, so they don't really do trends.

Such good advice Jenni, so true. My Patrick is 21 too lol, and indeed, he is going through a massive style change. He who used to not pay attention at all to his appearance (Mr Practical, Mr Comfortable...), he who HATED shopping is very different now that he has experienced living on his own and getting his own things.
Karen, smittie, you are speaking wisdom. It's good to know I'm not the only mom feeling this way.
Angie, you look smashing in those colours! Very inspiring for the fall.
Rach, Jenn, thanks for the insight.

Krish, I think your son may just be going through a style change. My personal experience of parenting is that they can do that, now that I have no teens anymore with my youngest David being 21. I wonder if some of it is wanting to ditch a persona that feels too "young" to them, that feels like their younger self. This is speculation as I can't remember enough what it felt like for me. I do remember a really great decision Mum made for me, where she gave over control of her clothes budget for me, to me, when I was 15. I loved getting to choose. I didn't do exactly the same with my 3 but from about that age started only buying clothes for them when they were there. It is sad to lose the chance to choose clothing gifts and I did, and still do, miss it. I felt it was psychologically safer than either risking their scorn or wasting my money on something they would never wear. I was able to buy the odd small clothing gift later like a camisole for the girls. Now I watch Rebecca's boyfriend ( she is 26) buy her clothes gifts which she is perfectly happy with!

I try to only listen to my teen's fashion advice when she likes something. The scorn I take with a grain of salt, but I didn't buy her the plaid.

I love plaid, but don't own much. It is seems such great way to pattern mix with othe items. I agree with the classic status. And I'm going to add it to my list for fall.

Plaid shirts were super-trendy a few years ago. I think they've receded a bit (gotta make room for all those florals, I guess) but they're never really going to be completely out of style.

I really love plaid shirts, but wished they were just a little thicker.
I do think of the black and red ones as a bit 'junior', but I feel like almost anything can be styled in an adult way.

I'm with Laura G! There was a time in my life when I thought teens knew more about fashion, but that time is over. I think "try hard middle aged moms" are the true style experts. A teenager not wanting to wear something may mean it's over for the teen set, but who cares? (Except the kind and patient moms wondering what to buy them.)

Lots of plaid shirts in the stores in Scandinavia. But not all people love to wear plaids, just like not all people love to wear florals. Some people don't like to wear any patterns or prints at all. We are all different, and that's fine.

I don't know how old your son are. But you know, to young people it is often important to dress like their peers. So if none of his peers wear plaid shirts anymore, this may the reason why he doesn't want to wear one either.

Plaid isn't a big part of my fashion statement, but I like to have at least 1 plaid flannel shirt in my closet. I am currently on the hunt for one with some olive in the colour scheme.

My DH and both DS's have some plaid in their closet- but probably not more than 3-4 shirts each, and one pair of plaid shorts!

Yes. I live in Canada.

I hope they're not dated, because I just bought one! Mine is quite fitted, navy, blush, and burgundy. It's not flannel. More of a light rayon type fabric that drapes nicely. I think it could be dressed up a bit even with dark jeans, dressy boots, and the right jewelry.

Such an interesting question. I have been thinking that I should add more plaid shirts this fall but have not found any that I want. Also, they seem so teen girl because that is who I see wearing them, often as a light jacket.
I love Jenn's plaid dress and would get one if those to wear with tall boots.

Fellow Canadian here. I pointed out a plaid shirt I liked when shopping with the 21 year old, and she gave it a look of such scorn. It was dusty pink, burgundy etc - and apparently the minute you start messing with colour in a plaid shirt, it is no longer authentic. Just try-hard middle-aged mom fashion . Alright then. Anyways - I wonder if boys are not into it right now because so many young teen girls wear it?

I feel all-over unattractive in a plaid shirt - they look great on others, but I cannot make it work myself. I still see them at retail everywhere though.
