Retail generally is down slightly in Australia, mainly because of the popularity of on line shopping. Malls seem to remain fairly busy, and even more so in the evening and on weekends, but the small strip shops ( roadside shops ) are closing down all around our cities. The Malls offer greater variety, thermo controlled environs, eateries, entertainment, movie theatres, massage, beauty therapy, game centres, bars etc. and people enjoy this 'something for everybody' experience. I certainly think they are here to stay.

Dying mall in my old hometown for sure. Lost the anchors, and lots of empty storefronts (about 1/3). No mall in new community (pop. 16,000) but a historic downtown street-scape with cafés and shops (3 great shoe stores!) that has become a destination for vacation/tourist shoppers.

A new mall is almost ready to be opened in Sarasota FL, near me. It will have lots of light, outdoor restaurants, and a mix of regular and upscale stores, with adjacent hotels and office space, and movie theater. I think the idea for success is to make it a "destination". October, here I come!

Here in Allentown PA we have one small mall which shows no sign of dying, it has a newer outdoor part to it which has a few nicer shops. The nearest large mall is an hour away near Philadelphia and is the King of Prussia Mall which is huge and is almost too overwhelming to me.
If I need something super special I tend to look on line at Neiman Marcus, Saks , Nordies and Bloomingdales. I get some idea then I head down to the mall and look.
I grew up in the UK and I sort of miss the High Street shopping experience and especially London's Oxford St/Regent St. Having said that after the winter we had last year the indoor mall was quite a godsend !

Hmm, where I see malls thriving is where they have nicer and more varied stores. I don't know whether the other malls are failing because they don't have the nicer stores or if the nicer stores don't want to go there because they are failing. Mayfair Mall near Milwaukee is expanding. If they can keep the teen traffic under control, they will continue to be very successful. But as it stands, with the attached movie theaters, once evening comes the real buyers leave that mall because they are scared of the gangs of teens.

There is a strip mall being installed near that same mall that has a Nordstrom Rack, a Saks Off Fifth, and will soon have a DSW. I am not sure why strip malls are successful here, as it snows.

In Madison, the mall on the East Side is failing, but the mall on the West Side has much nicer stores and is installing a Nordstrom (the first regular Nordstrom in WI), so they aren't hurting.
Ultimately, people want a one-stop convenient place to shop, and a lot of the alternative models haven't provided that. Boutiques are interspersed in strip malls here; outlet malls are just that - outlets, and free-standing stores force people to drive short and heavily trafficked distances from place to place. A mall is really the only place where many stores are all within walking distance around here, so they can reinvent them all they please, but they serve an important purpose in some areas.

I love dead malls (there's websites dedicated to tons of urban decay and malls) - and I think the ones that survive are ones that are reinventing themselves. We have thriving ones here and ones that are dead/dying.

The dead malls look like they are stuck in the 1970's and are hard to get to (middle of nowhere, no anchor store, crime problems)... but the nice shiny upscale ones are always super busy (even if there are crime problems!)

I think the mall is here to stay, but it might be different in terms of their layout. I really like West Edmonton Mall because it has everything I want: movies, a nice place to have dinner with friends that isn't mall food, tons of stuff to browse and buy ... and ample parking! Oh, and the waterpark and indoor amusement park are cool!

The malls seem to be doing okay here in NZ, often at the expensive of the traditional shopping strips. I prefer the traditional strips with independant retailers rather than chain stores but do shop at malls. We don't have the extremes of climate - but on a particularly hot or particularly wet day a mall does have it's place!

Around my area here in Alabama we have two indoor malls in Huntsville;Parkway Place Mall and Madison Square Mall . Parkway seems to be doing okay, but Belk is relocating from the MSM to the newer outdoor mall/ shopping center Bridgestreet . So I'm not sure if MSM has one or two big keystone stores left.
I hope my store will move to Bridgestreet in 2015 when the lease is up. Where our store is currently ,we are in a shopping center with a Target and several discounters ( Marshall's , Ross, Steinmart) so prices seem much higher by comparison. Over at Bridgestreet a lot of the better and some designer brands are there already so we would seem normal to affordable there.

Good question. Lots of brick and mortar shops are closing or reducing their size. Staples and Best Buy are two according to the Wall Street Journal.

It is hard for me to shop online.( Fit, color, fabric) And if I do shop online, it is only with sites that allow me to return at their retail locations. I think I will always prefer to shop in person, which for me right now is the second largest mall in the country. (so many choices!) Working women and Rambling Ann (above) may not have that option.

For many people, shopping is also recreation. Would that cover any Fabbers?

Here in Seattle University Village Mall continues to expand at an amazing rate. But unlike traditional and historical malls where the parking is outside in sprawilng lots and the shops are enclosed inside the mall, U Village increasingly is building multi story parking garages on its perimeters with the stores themselves in a walkable outside environment. The exact opposite of the traditional mall. Its success speaks for itself. This works in Seattle with our mild climate (well, except for the Winter rains).

I find it a much more pleasant way to shop - no sort of frantic dashing from one store to another in an indoor mall environment.

What I don't get is the last two malls built in the Salt Lake City area, and the new one they just announced this week, are outdoor malls. Hello, did you forget it snows here? It's not California, people. Who wants to deal with outer wear when you shop for clothes? So they aren't dead here, but we are always 10 years behind the trends. Where I live now, the nearest mall is 150 miles away, so the UPS man has worn ruts in my gravel driveway.

A couple larger malls here in my medium-sized midwest city are doing great; a third one which has always struggled recently had a complete renovation so that now the stores are all accessible from the outside rather than the inside. Now its parking lot is always full, go figure! Of course it also changed over many of its stores when it renovated.

The Galleria in Houston is humming right along. It's so hot here that indoor shopping is a relief. The Galleria is in the midst of a big renovation. Stores are closing and remodeling, then reopening. There's lots of space swapping going on. The other mall close by, Katy Mills, is an outlet mall that is beginning to get some better stores. Neiman Marcus Last Call and Saks Off 5th have been there for a while, but Kate Spade is set to open and today is H & M's grand opening. Some malls around Houston have really declined and some of the suburbs are going with the pedestrian friendly, main street concept. Seems we have a little bit of everything.

Well...we have THE mall here, that is, the Mall of America. It shows no signs of dying out. The only weird thing is that it was designed to have four main stores, but there are only three—no one ever decided to move into Bloomingdale's old space, which has been vacant for several years now. I can only imagine what the rent must be for that space...

And I've been to another mall maybe twenty minutes away, and it is usually crammed.

I agree with Suz: in places where there is a lot of inclement weather, I don't think malls will ever die out.

we are getting a big new outlet mall here, opening in the spring, and one old regular mall is being totally remodeled. When it is hot the malls are buzzing. Personally, I do not go there much, and the last few times I went the traffic was sparse. I think the ones with the big popular anchor stores and a nice food court and few good eating establishments will be around for a long time. Maybe other smaller malls in old neighborhoods will bite the dust.

We only have one real mall and it seems to be holding its own just fine. Some stores come and go of course but overall it stays pretty busy, probably because it's anchored by Dillards. With their headquarters here, we've got a pretty good store. That's really the only store that draws me to the mall. I much prefer to shop at the outdoor shopping centers.

They won't fail completely in busy urban centres in Canada, simply because there's a need for a way to shop without freezing your bum off. But for my own part, I'd be glad to see most of them go.

Locally in this small FL town, you bet. First went JC Penney, then Sears, then Belk. Kmart is the 'anchor' store, I kid you not. It's a Simon mall.
But in Tampa, the International Plaza is alive and well, and full of tony stores. So maybe it's locale dependent.

It's looking likely.

What do you think? Are malls failing in your area? Our local mall is. Shops keep closing all the time. The big mall downtown seems to be doing OK, though.
