Aubergine: put on the cardis and take a bunch of photos, front, side and back view. There is nothing like it to really be sure. Maybe that way you'll discover a special way to wear it that is especially flattering for you.

I love them!

I'm short and have pear-esque hips and thighs, so I'm not sure I can do the really long ones posted here. I have a bunch that stop maybe right below my hips, though. I'm not the most clueful person about proportions ever, but I like to think this length makes me look a little taller and slimmer because of the combination of extra coverage in that area and the vertical line created when it's worn open. It also feels a little more current and casual than a shorter, more fitted cardigan to me.

Would like to maybe try a cocoon cardigan or other newer shapes of long cardigan if I can find one that works for me.

A-ha! I think I understand better: long, fitted cardis which stop mid thighs do not flatter a pear shape tendency, as Laura points out. And looking at my pics above, I can see that a second problem is the empire waist: any hourglass silhouette is lost while hips and derriere are wildly emphasized.

Whereas a long loose cardi in a cocoon shape (with the hem slighlty coming in as opposed to flaring out), or yet again a rectangular-line cinched at the waist, like Gryffin suggests, would be more flattering.

So glad to hear that they're back in style and trending. Being a tall inverted triangle/rectangle, I've never totally stopped wearing them anyway, but sadly I did consign one or two. They make a great winter coat stand-in in my temperate climate, too. Love, love, love Una's (though black doesn't love me back any more). Need to explore the cocoon/updated styles. Can't wait to see how people style them this year...hoping for ideas and inspiration!

Krishnidoux- it would depend on the volume of the cardi. I like a nice rectangular line with a low hip belt which adds hourglass tendencies. You could so a bigger cardi for more of the oversized look. I like it all but the slender dress mode is the dressiest application to my eye!! But no bad cardi!! That's the delicious part!!

I struggle with long cardigans as a pear because I feel like they emphasize my butt and thighs. I used to own a few but I don't think I do right now. They are so comfy and cozy in winter that I'd love to figure out how to make them work for me,

Shiny, love your layering idea! Will try it for sure: short jacket over long cardi... Do you do the max long cardi with super-cropped jacket?
I've had my share of history with dramatic shawl collars too... not always to my advantage either...
Your fitting tips are excellent. Although I HAVE looked matronly in fitted sleeve cardis too... example in the pics below. (I gave that cardi away).

Yes, I have a handful of them which I've collected over the years. I have two black cardigans with shawl neck collars -- one is a thin knit (added this year), the other more thick & chunky; a cream boyfriend merino; and a black ribbed knit. I love wearing them over dresses, or over skinny jeans, and at this time of year, they work as outerwear. In the winter they work under 3/4 length coats. I have on occasion been known to layer a shorter leather jacket over them -- just to be different (I think I got that idea from someone here on YLF!)

I find them very cozy and warm, like wearing a blanket, and as such great for business travel when you don't know how cold it'll be on the plane, or in the conference room.

All of mine are petite so they are proportioned for my size. I don't belt in general and though that could be a cute look, I prefer leaving them open and creating a long lean line. For some reason I think this gives me the illusion of slimming & height. For some reason I have it in my head that I can get away with dramatic shawl collars (which I love but don't necessarily love me back), provided the sweater is long enough.

As for frumpy & matronly -- it is a risk. Choose carefully. I don't think any of mine are frumpy or matronly, though the cream BF one does have an ironic bit of "grandpa" going on, which I kind of like.

Fit tips: look for styles that have very fitted sleeves, to provide structure. Loose sleeves quickly look frumpy. I do in general also prefer higher cut armholes, but I would definitely try a looser, deeper cut or dolman or sleeveless/vest style this year.

I'd love to add a cocoon style this year!

Yay cause I love long cardigans.
Oh, shoot, because I just gave away three or four cool ones I had bought in a French boutique in Morocco because I thought they were falling out of fashion. I also have the impression they can make me look matronly, if I am not careful.

@Jules, there is a boutique here in Ottawa that sells the same brands as you mention: Pink Martini, Only, Juicy, etc. and I love it so much, because these brands have couture flair while remaining relatively cheap. That place is actually where I had in mind to go to get an oversize cardi.
@Gryffin: Those are great outfit ideas. So the cardi outfit has more of an inverted triangle shape, with volume on top, right?
@Roseandjones, I am drooling over your picks. the Plumo one wins my heart right away, although I know it would totally overwhelm a petite like me, and that the one from Next is a better choice. Which one is yours?
@Rabbit: That is very interesting about footwear + cardigan. Maybe this explains why some cardigan outfits felt matronly. I notice it was when pairing them with (low) office heels.
@Marley and Stylefan, could this be why for you too? Would you wear an oversize boyfriend shirt as topper instead?
@ Unfrumped, that is a clever analysis. What is a feminine shoe for you? I get you with belting, love to this myself, and agree too that it doesn't feel as current somehow. The silhouette of the moment seems to be round, roomy, purposely oversize.
@ Firecracker, thanks! Somehow I had missed that entry. And good point about arm hole area. It might make or break the whole outfit in terms of being current or not. I notice lots of them are eve Dolman sleeves.

The one I bought is quite different from my long boyfriend cardigans that I've been wearing for several years--much longer and a roomier fit through the upper sleeve and armhole area.

What rabbit said. And some of Style Fan. I have a couple and would like to figure out styling better. The longer length can be good for long torso/ cover hips for me, bimut easy to go frump or cut me in half. Cocoon or asymmetrical hem might be something I'd focus on for current look. And just the right pants and my most feminine or refined but still comfy shoe seems needed.
I also want to belt some cardi's to feel like I'm getting different looks from pieces, but I don't always feel that looks current, or am doing something wrong with styling.

Hi krishnidoux, I saw it at a little local boutique (I'm in Toronto, in the Danforth/Greektown area if you know it). Not sure of the brand. She has stuff by smaller brands like Pink Martini, Lilibleu, and Yumi to name a few that I seem to buy frequently. When I saw it I promised I'd go back without my kid for a proper shop but haven't made it yet!

In the beginning of my ylf time I did more big chain shopping (Gap etc) than I had for a while, because of the specific items I saw people wear here. But now that I have a bit more confidence in my own take I'm doing more local shopping, at places that carrry smaller brands. Also I am hoping to buy more stuff by local designers as well. It is more expensive but the cuts and quality are better, I have to admit! Do you shop locally in Montreal? Some great boutiques there too.

I think classic, but may benefit from being styled with some edge or an unexpected juxtaposition. I'm thinking that shoes and how the ankle is handled really matter too. To my mind, kind of like a sac dress, they tend to leave a lot of shapeless up top so need quite a lot of structure down below sometimes.

I think they would fall into the classic category - not always trendy, but a clothing item that could be considered an essential in many wardrobes. StyleFan - I too have never felt good in one - I think that maybe if I could find one that was cropped in the back that I could make it work, but in general they make me feel frumpy so I avoid them!

I think it is a great look on other people. I always feel like I am wearing a bathrobe. I don't know why. I can not find the right length or weight. Whenever I have bought one I end up getting rid of it. I never receive compliments. Okay I have finished my rant.

Can't answer except for my personal opinion. Long v-neck cardis can be work as tunics, dresses and cardigans. I always have some in rotation. The thinner and more fitted the more versatile for me since I can belt them, but I also like oversized. They work over leggings, leather leggings, pants, dresses - I find them invaluable. just my two cents!!

I'm seeing this look around too. I think skinnies with jeans are perfect for our climate much of the winter, so I'll be looking around for cardis that feel current. I saw an olive one in a sort of thick chunky square knit that felt fresh, need to get back to the store for a better look.

I noticed a some of Angie's recent picks were long, wool cardigan worn over skinny jeans. Is this a 2014 look, or just a timeless look?
Do you wear them?
