My best friend is a very textbook pear shape with tiny shoulders, chest, and waist, but a very round bottom and wide hips. She also likes gauchos. I can understand why she wouldn't feel comfortable in clams, but I still think a pair of walk shorts would look much better. There is just too much fabric swishing around for my taste.

My DD looks adorable in these, and loves them. She doesn't like skinny or tight jeans. She does like skirts and wears those a lot in the summer. But she likes culouttes (when she can find them) for the ease of skirts and the practicality of pants. The ones she has basically look like an A-line skirt on her, until she walks, then you can see they were actually flowy pants.

She's only 5'2, but if the length is at the knee the balance looks right. (She does have longer pairs which probably do make her look short-legged, but she couldn't give two figs about it - she does have a lot of style, in her own unique way, but she is first and foremost a comfort dresser!).

One thing to watch out for - you want the crotch and thighs to be loose. I think you want them to fit more like a skirt than pants.

Does that make sense? Or am I confused, and these are not what you are talking about?

I don’t have clients in gauchos any more. It seems to be a dated look. But when you walk around Paris and you see classy older woman wearing culottes, it totally works. In Europe, culottes are classic.

I think the key is that they have to really flatter your body type, and I agree that they are hard to wear because you look short-legged fast. A visual would help.

Hmm, I gonna have to disagree. I don't know if they are out or not. However, they are definitely not universally unflattering. I own a pair of pants in the gaucho cut (very good quality linen pants with very wide leg opening) and I think it looks great on me (and hence pear types, I would assume).

I do not think they lasted more than one season, I am glad I never bought a pair, very unflattering!!

Even when they were "in" they were terribly unflattering. I agree with you that bermudas and walk shorts have replaced them, thank goodness.

I've been talking with some friends about the whole gaucho style. My take on it is that they're not really "in" anymore. It seems that bermuda shorts have taken their place, but I could be wrong. What do you think?
