Just to be a spanner -- diamond marketing has a deceptive history of false scarcity and price fixing: The Incredible Story Of How De Beers Created And Lost The Most Powerful Monopoly Ever

It gets worse: Conflict Diamonds aka Blood Diamonds (Amnesty International) ...The retail sector in particular fails to provide sufficient assurance to consumers that the diamonds they sell are conflict-free.

As MsMary mentioned moissanite is an excellent alternative. Myself, I am happy with CZ studs.

A thought on size...

Mine are 0.25 each and I have big "lobey" ears, and I'm a big tall gal, but the quality of the stones is very good and they have their own special oomph in a subtle way. Very appropriate for my work environment (rather conservative finance). I guess I'm saying, go for quality over size. Also I have an amazing husband who gave them to me several years ago!

ps they have a screw backing so are more secure.

I have a pair of moissanite studs that cost about 10% of what real diamonds would cost, and I love the way they look. One of the things I love about them is that I am very concerned about "blood diamonds" and my conscience is clear wearing my moissanites. You can, of course, get non-conflict diamonds and you can also avoid the issue by buying antique diamonds.

I do think CZ's look cheap, especially over time.

I am completely laughing but also feeling pity at Beth losing a diamond earring to a chicken!

I always prefer "real thing" jewelry to anything else. Comes from being raised in a gold-loving middle eastern culture. I never thought I liked diamond earrings till DH got me a pair of rose gold and diamond hoops that I wear about every other day for the last two years.

I wanted some for years and finally bought them about 14 years ago, when I worked at Nordstrom and bought them at Anniversary Sale with my 33% discount, which made them about half off retail. They're very nice quality, set in platinum and I wear them about every other day. Worth every penny.

I don`t wear studs but I wear earrings. I am not a stud type woman. I inherited my mother`s diamond studs and my first husband bought me pearl studs so I do have them. But if I did wear them I would definitely get the real thing. No question about that.

I never even really wanted diamond stud earrings...and then my husband gave me a pair for Christmas years ago. At first I wore them from time to time, but grew to really love that they completed every outfit, no matter how dressy or casual. I don't know what size mine are, but I think they're just right -- not so small as to seem insignificant, not so large as to seem ostentatious.

So I do think they're worth it. I have an old pair of CZ earrings that are smaller stones, set in a silver setting, and they were good enough for me for a long time, but once I had the diamond ones, the CZ's hardly ever got worn.

For what it's worth, Peri, I can tell the difference. :-)

But let's assume, for argument's sake, that nobody could tell the difference. I still think they are worth it, for the same reason that beautiful and expensive undergarments are worth it to the woman who enjoys wearing them. Nobody sees the undies, except her mate, but knowing she has them on under her everyday clothes makes her feel fab. If owning real diamond studs makes you feel fab, they are worth it. It's almost like having a pleasurable secret.

I think they're worth it. I used to have a very small pair that I wore regularly. They were my go-to earrings to fill the holes or to add a bit of everyday sparkle that went with anything I was wearing that day. I still miss them...I lost one to a chicken that pecked it right out of my ear. :)

Hi Peri --

Are you a stud earring person? I'm not. So that's the first thing to contemplate

Plus I have big ears, and have assessed that I'd also need at least a 1.5 carat size in each ear so the poor thing doesn't look lost in a sea of lobe. If you're serious about that size, I'd probably "invest" in a pair of CZ and give them a trial run before committing to such a significant price point.

Also seconding Blue Nile and other Pricescope.com=vetted jewelers. Good Old Gold is both online and B&M, and when I was active on PS I saw a lot of awesome estate/vintage finds from them -- though they also sell new.

I ask myself this same question every few years. I am not a fine jewelry collector but part of me would really like a pair of diamond studs. However, whenever I stop to think about it I get caught up in the question of value (are they really worth it?) and also the ethical dilemma. I'm intrigued by the potential for estate goods, which would offset both of those issues and also add the intrigue of past history, which I am drawn to. Danusia, thank you for that auction site info -- it looks like an amazing source.

I have to say "yes." But let me back that up. I bought my first pair shortly after my divorce. I spent a fortune (relatively speaking) at a time I could not necessarily afford a splurge. I have since bought bigger and better diamond earrings, but I wear those initial studs more than any other pair of earrings I own. I could happily wear them every single day for the rest of my life. Here is something else, they are a source of pride for me. They boost my self esteem like the more expensive one do not.

For comparison I did buy some CZ earrings. I hated them. They looked cheap (the setting; the size; the lack of depth and clarity). My CZ earrings did not look the same as my real diamonds. I was embarrassed to be seen in them. I tossed them in the garbage.

Now I know many women that happily wear their CZ earrings and I am happy for them so it really comes down to you and what you think.

My hubby had me a pair of diamond studs made over ten years ago. They were expensive at the time, but very beautiful stones, and they were made to match my engagement ring (for a man who is not often romantic, when he does go that route, it is usually big time!).

They are my favourite thing, partly for sentimental reasons but i also love the way they look. I wear them everyday, and never take them off. They are my equivalent of a tattoo, I never get tired of them, even though I am a commitment phobe in most other wardrobe areas :)

So I guess it depends on what you want out of them. Also, if I was purchasing diamonds now, I'd probably try to research an ethical source. But really I have no need for more. (Also, if you never take them out, you don't lose them, lol!)

Just wanted to add that I never ever buy my fine jewelry from a bricks and mortar store. I actually buy through online vendors and my larger diamonds are certified and come with a complete certfication which has been verified via a friend who is a certified gemologist. She is the one who steered me towards buying online since these online stores simply do not have the overhead that a bricks and mortar store has.

Also, I recommend this site if you are looking to buy estate auction jewelry http://www.hamptonauction.com

Peri, a good classic size imo is between .5 and 1.0 tcw. If you really want to make a statement go for the larger ones. You can check out how the different sizes look on ears in real life settings check out the website http://www.pricescope.com

I have studs in .75 tcw in a martini setting and 1.5 tcw in a rose gold bezel setting. I also have diamond huggies in platinum 2tcw each earring has 5- .2ct diamonds.

What Anne said and what Staysfit said - I am a little absent minded so do not trust myself, but I think for others they are a total classic that can be handed down. But look into their origin!!

A bit off topic, but if you can find a jeweler you trust who deals in estate or consignment jewelry the cost can be considerably less.

For myself, I seem to lose earrings relatively often. So I wouldn't be springing for diamonds!

After splurging on mine a few years ago i can never feel as good in anything else. I would easily be getting towards cents per wear already.

I bought some real diamond studs myself, small, but real, to wear everyday, last year. I have worn them more or less every day, certainly for work and LOVE them. I feel it is a classic and straight forward, not distracting but will catch people's eyes who look carefully. And as they are genuine I feel an e tea bit of credibility- can't be right but it works for me!

My mum bought me up to think that pearl studs were The Only Earings and that diamonds were too cool for my skin colour. I disagree!! Pearls go funny after a couple of years.

And if money were no object (how nice would that be!) I would have drop diamonds square cut to match my engagement ring ...

Interesting to read people's views
