I think that if you live in a hot climate, an above knee length skirt on an "older" woman (I'm 51) can be a more age-appropriate casual look than shorts. I do have a couple of very casual, above knee skirts that I wear when other people are appropriately wearing shorts, like on vacation. But I'm short and they are not that much above my knee.

Cciele I will try to find time later to style it. I only plan to wear it as Mo suggested. Very casually in my beachy neighborhood with metallic jack rogers & a scarf with a loose summery top.

I also think it's more a matter of context rather than age. Perhaps we can see some styling ideas?

Janet these aren't as short as they look. I didn't have time to try on. They start at the hip.

So personally I purged all of my denim minis (actually all of my denim skirts, period, but that is a different story) a couple of seasons ago because I was never wearing them precisely because they felt too young. I have issues with that though - I look really young and am always getting mistaken for a student even though I am 32, so I try not to dress that way too. Anyway, the minis were getting to feel too short for comfort anyway, and with leggings I think they looked even more young.

Just my take though.. and Mo is right, if you live somewhere beachy or casual (unlike me, who lives in a urban environment and works somewhere full of students), it's probably a much more all-ages vibe.

Mo you look great in that pic! I will probably take your advice & purge the frayed one. I haven't worn it in years anyway. Come to think of it I haven't worn the dark one for a couple of years either but I don't want to be too hasty. I think asking on YLF & getting a feel for what suits my body & new ways to wear things needs to come before a mass purge.

I prefer the first skirt to the second. It looks more sophisticated. *I* would purge the frayed one for sure. Looks like a juniors.

I don't know how old you are, but I am wary of any skirt that is wider than it is long. But I'm old.

For me, once I start to question myself, it's a sign that I'm probably ready to move on. :)
That said, you do live near the beach and in a casual world . . . situationaly it might not be inappropriate. If you pair it with a tank top and platform flip flops, as a 19 year old would, that would definitely be juvenile. FWIW, here is mine in South Beach (I was 41 at the time)

Here are pics of the skirts I already own. Should I purge any of them? I am comfortable with some clothes that others my age wouldn't wear, like short shorts (not shorties though)

I'd say they are a younger look, if not exactly juvenile. I am an over 40 who wears one, but honestly I think this is the last year for it. I'm planning on moving it to my beach cover-up capsule. Actually, the last times I wore it were both in Miami on the beach and hiking in Tahoe by some waterfalls. Both times over my swimsuit. So I guess I already moved it to that category unwittingly lol.

I hope not because I wear one on occasion (weekends only). It's dark wash but has some tiny distressing and isn't really mini on me because I'm "vertically challenged". But it's a few inches above the knee and I think it works in the right setting.

Does it depend on the wash? Is a dark rinse one OK. Is a faded distressed one not? Are they both too teenager or unfab?
