I am so glad Angie chimed in. After I posted, I thought about it some more and realized that I find those clogs (my black ones are the same as in the picture, which I didn't notice before) stylish as long as they're part of a stylish outfit. I couldn't phrase it as well as Angie, but was planning to come back to add that.

My brand new Birkenstock clog-things that I bought to use as house slippers ~ now, there is NO WAY they could be part of a stylish outfit! Comfy for padding around the house, but not for use beyond the front door!

I think it all depends on how you wear it, like Angie said. I just bought a pair of loafers -- soft, square-toed loafers -- in a fabulous metallic design, and I am thinking I just might be able to make them work if I do it right.

Okay! I have VERY strong opinions about the original Dansko clog which is pictured!

It all depends on HOW it's worn. If this particular clog is worn in the typical Seattle way with too short jeans, white socks and a T-shirt - I'm going to slit my wrists. But if its put together with sass and style - I can happily live with the look of these clogs. I pop clients into this type of footwear from time to time and make it work

I had a pair of Dansko clogs for years. I don't think they're stylish, but some of their styles have improved. They're also not comfy in the sense that you sink into them, they have great support but are very firm on your feet. The sole is fairly heavy. Plus, the lack of ankle support makes them a little tricky!

I'll second everything Claudia said. I have a couple pair of the professional clogs and find myself reaching for them when nothing else seems right. The little bit of height means I don't have to hem my jeans. Some of the colors are really fun, some are boring, and some yuck. I like the way my metallic copper ones look peeking out from under denim. They were great to wear when teaching. I could be on my feet all day and never think about my shoes.

Anne, I have the one's you pictured in your post. I wear them in the kitchen. They make me taller, easier to cook, and who wants to spill on nice shoes? They are very comfortable and work ready. And practical. Mine are several years old and going very strong.

In what I think is the same footbed, they make some cute ankle boots too. Love this one, but they don't make it any more! (if you see a size 38 in black, let me know): http://www.shoescentral.net/wo.....ather.html

This is the current one: http://www.clogscentral.com/da.....hOff.html#

I think they'd look great with a skinny pant.

Anne, a while ago I posted a question about a pair of Danksos that I ended up not getting, but you can check out what people said about them. They're not true clogs since they have a back to them, but they're deeply Dansko-esque. http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....nky-for-me

The shoes were these: http://www.6pm.com/dansko-tori-black

Rheostaticsfan - I think the red shoes and the boots are nice! Sandals ... meh. I think it's the clogs that are getting the low marks for style quotient.

I just bought my first pair of Dansko's. Not clogs. I think they're cute in a retro way. Am I kidding myself?

http://www.zappos.com/dansko-r.....odPage2a:0

These are less cute but I think wearable:
http://www.zappos.com/dansko-m.....odPage2a:0

I would classify those as a practical shoe which could look okay as part of the right outfit. There are times when a ballet flat or even loafer may not be enough.

They may be easier to drive in than boots!

I have had those same thoughts about them, Claudia. I see women wearing them all the time and I think a lot hinges on what the entire outfit looks like.

I must defend these clogs, which are not without their positive attributes:

1) comfy, warm, can be worn with thick socks or no socks

2) perfect for slipping on under bootcut jeans to run errands when there is slush and puddles on the ground

3) ease of slipping on and off like slippers

4) they give some heel height

5) there exists even less attractive mucking about footwear for bad winter weather

The defense rests.
