I feel like the first one is a bit dated not because of the gathered neck but because it has an empire seam below the bust. I'm just not seeing that feature much these days. That and knits seem to have gotten either a lot less fitted (normcore masculine-inspired) or a lot thinner and more drapey.

I agree with lisap. I think the gathered neck knit top in particular doesn't read that well. The other top I would call "drape neck" rather than a true cowl, though that may be splitting hairs or I may just be wrong. For that I'd look at the fit of the top overall, sleeves, fabric, length and if it is fluid and just super flattering then that could be very useful rather than sacrificing flattering fit for a a new top just to be new. Drape neck tops can work especially well at looking elegant on certain body shapes and for more dressy tops.
Sometimes it is so item-specific due to the little tweaks over time

I think it's more a case of them being less than modern and fashionable than the alternatives out there. They are obviously still well represented at the retail level, but tend not to have a part in a modern, current wardrobe if you use fashion editorial and higher-end retail as a benchmark.

I am trying to edit things down in my closet and am wondering if either cowl neck tee/tops or gathered scoop neck tops are considered dated?
Here is an example:
http://www.necessiteesonline.c.....k-tee.html

and another:
http://www.buckle.com/daytrip-.....7840ET1935
Thanks :)
