I am on the border of plus these days and I agree that something that draws the eye up can be really flattering. But blazers aren't the only thing that can do that - shoulder detailing, necklaces, etc. are also good bets.

I have fallen in love with knit blazers in the past year. They look as nice as a woven blazer but they are so much more comfy; it feels like you're wearing a cardigan but you look like you're wearing a jacket.

Welcome to the forum! You've gotten some great input already, but I wanted to say that I second taking photos of your outfits -- even if only you view them -- for awhile. It is important to remember that camera angles and lenses can deceive- so find a spot to take photos, and play with angles until you find one that is most "true." The camera has a valuable point of view (ugh, bad pun), and the mirror has another. Some things look better IRL, others shine only in pics. Having both bits of info to work with when planning a wardrobe is great!

Angie, by the way, would refer to you as a "pretty pear."

First, a big welcome to the forum from me too, chocolatethundergirl. Great advice from the other ladies.

These two blog posts might be a good starting point. (if you are a pear with hourglass tendencies it's very possible that mixing the "rules" for both body types will be just the ticket).

http://youlookfab.com/2010/04/.....type-2010/
http://youlookfab.com/2010/05/.....type-2010/

Here's an archive overview with all of Angie's blog posts on body type. Lots of extra info there :-)
http://youlookfab.com/category.....body-type/

Also: don't hesitate to ask and/or post photos if you need extra help/would like more input.

CTG welcome to the forum. I'd say your eye for balance is as good a place as any to start. The interesting thing about balance/proportion is that the mirror tells one story and the camera another. So that is why you will hear fabbers say time and again that the best way to learn is to post pictures.
You say yourfigure is impossible, well, it's time to ditch that word. There are plenty of generously built folk on this forum who make great style possible.
Anyway, as my dear old Dad used to say, "the impossible just takes a little longer."

Angie has some great guideline posts both about dressing your body type -- AND "breaking the rules" and playing against type. Check the archives on the blog page!

El Cee thank you for that detailed info... I will take it to heart- especially the piece about avoiding raglan sleeves.

Hi CTG! I am an hourglass with soft, rounded shoulders and a generous hip and thigh. Balance is one of my own personal priorities in dressing, but it is certainly not everyone's goal. I find that I can achieve balance by use of color but also by wearing a topper with a more structured shoulder. Blazers do not have to be your only option. As Golden suggests, jean jackets can give this balance. I also find that this fall's sweater coats/jackets, esp. the ones that have a tiny bit of shoulder padding or shoulder definition, work well for me. Moto jackets also work well with my figure. I tend to avoid toppers with raglan sleeves (bomber jackets) as they give me a slope-shouldered appearance and seem to draw attention to my hip area.

My goal is to look balanced. Have you tried classic jean jackets or cardigans? I think there are a lot great of options for toppers.

Hi there all... I went shopping yesterday for he first time in a long time with my impossible plus sized pear/hourglass figure.

I noticed that I looked the most balance in light colored blazers.

Is my goal to look balanced though?

Any other plus pear/hour glasses out there?

I'd love to see some fall trends that you think we can rock.
