I have a blue one from COS I like it so much, got one more, this time in ink. COS is my go to store for the kind of tops you are searching. They have two sale events per year, at least here in Canada. The summer sale is still on but might be over soon. Worth checking.

Mine has tops like the bottom two that Inge posted, and some drapery stuff as well as the book, but what they carry varied wildly from one store to another.

Thanks for the options, Inge. I love the blue vneck from COS!

Donna, cowl necks often work very well for me. I'll watch for those shirts. Thanks for the tip.

Chewy, I've shopped around Target lately and they're leaning a bit more boho than I'm looking for right now.

I'm short too with narrowish shoulders and bad posture which means I need to find quite a bit of structure with drapey looks. In F/W this means a dropped shoulder seam and fitted from the elbow down which means I can push up the sleeves without it looking sloppy. Last year, I found great Heattech cowl neck Ts like that at Uniqlo, but I don't see the same one on their web site today. :( But maybe they are still getting in their F/W stuff?

In addition to the styles in Angie's post, and the WHBM top, I'm also thinking:

- drape front and crossover tops: they have some structure built in, and they are often quite short in front (annoying when you're tall like me, but will work to your advantage as a petite;-)

- blouson tops, and tops with dolman or batwing sleeves in drapey fabrics that collapse back onto the body: oversized drape on the arms and up top, but they go in around the waist or hips, which provides structure.

- tops with built-in layering or pleated detailing, which often automatically creates some kind of structure.

- Peplum-style tops, tops with shark bite hemlines, asymmetrical styles...

Some examples below.

Stores: perhaps Macy's, Ann Taylor and Loft (they often have sales), H&M, Mango, COS, and ASOS are usually worth a look too.

Thanks, kkards! That top looks like exactly what I'm looking for. I'll keep an eye on WHBM.

Your recommendation also reminded me of a factor I forgot to mention...neckline. Scoop or V preferred. Crewnecks, not so much.

I generally find WHBM good for this type of top.....but with them I always wait for some kind of sale, I bought this top early this spring.,but I sure they do something similar for fall, it has a deliberate drapeness that's hard to see inthe picture

I'm building my fall wardrobe and realizing that my tops are lacking. I'm noticing most of my tops just look really over sized on my petite apple frame. I like oversized drape, but with enough interesting shape that it looks intentional, not just oversized. I'm also pretty hard on tops, so I'd like to keep my choices in the $40 and under range. I like the hang of both the sweater on the left and the gray top on the right in this collection of Angies.

Any suggestions of where to shop? I'm a 12, so I may be sized out of some shops.
