kellygirl, I love being outside, but am very glad to be able to retreat to AC! And thank you for the lovely compliment. "Effortless" is a style guideword for me, but I might like "nonchalant" even better.

Joy, not the Palisade peaches!! That's horrible! I was in CO in May last year, so I remember that cold. :)

Lucy, for sure, I still need some cold-weather things for mountains and trips back to CO. A lot of the pieces I'm struggling with are more style-shift kinds of items. Somehow, I find that harder to grapple with that climate-related changes.

rachylou, the seasons may be subtle, but they're still there!

lyn67, you won't be surprised to hear that we chose this place specifically because of the roof and the view. I needed those mountains.

Angie, thank you, My dad is never going to be quite the same again, and that is hard, but he's still with us, and better off than our worst fears last years.

I second your call. Also, I know it seems crazy in California, but I took to switching my closet out winter and summer and find it’s just... lighter on the soul, easier on the brain.

Beautiful bandana!
About five years ago I moved from temperate Sydney (four seasons) to Brisbane (three seasons - warm, hot and extra hot). It never really gets cold in the day here, only a little at night.
However, I find I still need quite a few cool weather clothes. We go back to Sydney a fair bit, often for a week or two at a time. I also travel to other cooler climates for work, so I need both casual stuff and dressy work things for travel. I would never wear a wool jumper in Brisbane, but I still need a couple for travel.
Keeping things in a holding zone, until you figure out if you need them longer term, is a smart strategy, especially if you still like the items. You may still find they get enough use each year to justify keeping, I store my cool weather things in a couple of cubes and a small hanging area, so they don't interrupt my normal clothes!

I think you will enjoy the winter things you cleaned and put away when you get them out and see them again. I miss putting seasonal things away. And the thrill of seeing them again, but leave them out for summer camping trips in the mountains when it can get quite cold. Also summer evenings can be cool enough to need some warmth. We are still in winter but it is warming up although the fruit including the wonderful Palisade peaches are 90% lost due to warm ups followed by days of bitter cold. It may not be over yet. Last year we had snow and cold in May.
Your hair looks fabulous and lack of humidity and wind means you can wear it down most days. Love the silk bandana.

These are great! You make dressing look so effortlessly stylish--in that kind of nonchalant, SoCal kind of way. It's a bit different up north in the bay. Your work space is great but I can imagine it could get a bit toasty. I love sitting outside until it gets hot--then I run for cover. I love the bandana--it is a fab third piece!

Runcarla, it has been a crazy year, for sure. It's weird to think how completely different my life was this time last year, and that's not even considering the pandemic.

smittie, I feel like the furthest thing from a native Californian! Good to have clothing camouflage.

JAileen, I have thought a lot about what it would have been like if this had happened last year. It wouldn't have been pretty. I was barely holding it together as it was. On top of the move, my dad had a health crisis last spring and spent several months in an institutionalized setting, so I would have been coordinating his care long distance with my siblings (as poor Angie is right now) on top of everything. Counting my blessings. (And no, no umbrella up on the roof yet, as we didn't move in until September last year. It looks like curbside pickup at stores might open in the next few weeks and, if so, we'll get one then.)

Angie, despite copious amounts of sunblock, I'm even getting a tan from spending so much time on the roof deck! I never, ever thought that would happen. Looking forward to seeing what you bought.

torontogirl, you know, having my hair up like that is the one time I really miss having bangs. I'm glad everyone seems to like it. The fashion prompts are a good idea!

nemosmom, too funny! I still associate rain with spring, even though it's been YEARS since I lived anywhere with rainy springs. (Colorado's rainy season is high summer.) Old habits die hard.

CocoLion, it might be a little cooler closer to the ocean, not that anyone's on the beach at the moment. I don't find the masks with the ear elastics terribly uncomfortable, but my husband does. We got him ones with ties instead. I do have glasses-fogging issues, though, and that's the worst for me.

Sal, I think I'll just switch out wool and linen with the seasons and leave everything else be. Really, a good chunk of my wardrobe is trans-seasonal.

suntiger, the best thing about the awkward balcony is that it overlooks our neighbors' chickens!

lisap, let me know how the re-staining goes! I ordered just one pack to see how they fit/look and Ikea said they wouldn't be shipping until June... but then I got a shipping notice yesterday, so maybe they'll be arriving after all? Who even knows.

shevia, if it's below 80 out and not raining, I'm up there on the roof with my laptop. It's seriously my office now, especially with everyone else in the house home 24/7. My husband just got word that he should be expecting to work at home for up to a YEAR. We all have to carve out our personal space.

Bandana look great on you and my shadow self has long hair that I can pile on my head just like that. I love the shot with you wearing a big hat and working on your Macbook. That would be me too.
I have been living with a long summer for many years now and you are quite right to put away the sweaters. It becomes impossible to imagine ever feeling cold again at some point and they look like relics. But keep something out for cold indoor spaces - just in case that ever becomes relevant again.

Great bandana and love your roof space! The other outdoor space seems awkward cause it's so narrow. Probably nice for sitting out and having coffee

Interesting that your style is changing - I can understand that in a new climate and with a new vibe! I also like to put my winter clothes away and vice versa. I could store them all in my closet but I like the routine of the changeover.

Years ago when I lived in LA (30+ Years ago) it was cooler. Not such long long summers. Frequently in the 70s. I know what you mean about July and August. It's much hotter here in Central CA too. 90s in April is crazy.

Outfits 3 and 4 are my favorite, black goes so well with your luxurious hair. The mask is cute, is it comfortable? They give me headaches.

Christina, I think it's less about the quarantine for me than about what my life in California will look like long-term. I've always had a little bit of an east coast/midwestern geek shadow style, especially in winter (see: Frye oxfords and navy cardigan). That worked all right in Colorado, but in California? I'm just not feeling it, but I might give it another year. And yeah, the summers are just too long to be looking at cashmere sweaters the whole time. Plus, I worry about moths.

Lisa, we are so lucky to have not one, but TWO outdoor spaces. The roof (in all the photos) is my sanctuary), but the balcony (behind me in #2) is this long, thin space that I can't figure out what to do with. I have my eye on some decking tiles from Ikea, and plants will help, but that's a project for when more shops are open.

Thanks, Becky! This climate is a huge learning curve for me.

Your strategies seem really sound for your changed climate/season cycling. Your outfits look great. I especially love #2, 3, and 5!

Every time I see pictures of your balcony, I swoon a little. SO Californian! And, wow, does your hair ever look great worn up in a bun - well, you have great hair to begin with , but it looks so cool like this. Using this enforced downtime to figure out different ways to manage ones wardrobe is something we all should be doing = Lisa, I'm talking to you , ahem.

Gorgeous bandana!

I am not surprised about the holding zone. In this quarantine situation, how can you assess which items you really want to keep?

it makes sense that you'd have to start storing your winter items. They'll just get in your way for the 10 months or however long you don't need them!

So...April happened, I guess?

If you don't count face masks (which I absolutely don't), I added one item to my wardrobe in April, bringing me to a total of five for the year. This silk bandana was dyed and hand printed here in LA, and it is beautiful. It's an easy, casual, and lightweight accessory to throw on over a summer dress or as third piece for a simple outfit.

Fashion things on my mind:

1. I'm calling it. It's summer. While it was cool and rainy for the first part of the month, last week we had a run of three 90°-plus days in a row. With highs in the 80s and 90s for the foreseeable future, I'm declaring it an early summer. It's fine. We had a long spring, starting back in January. (Insert eyeroll here.) I'm actually feeling all right about my summer wardrobe, finally. Ask me about it again in July, though, when I'm faced with another four months of hot weather still on the horizon. Luckily, that's about the time my last Elizabeth Suzann dress could arrive.

2. The overflowing holding zone. With no pressure to drop things at Goodwill anytime soon, I've been pretty liberal about tossing clothes in the holding zone. Mostly winter clothes. Fur vest? Wool skirt? Easy to put in the bag. But my navy merino cardigan, the Frye oxfords, that black fit and flare dress, the olive scarf? I'm still kind of attached to those things, even though they don't feel quite right anymore. I'm seeing how life feels without them, and giving myself permission to rescue them if I'm not completely ready.

3. Nowhere to go. I miss the challenge of creating outfits for varied activities. That's all. I haven't switched to athleisure or loungewear. I still get dressed every day, just the way I used to. I just miss that extra spark of creativity that, you know, doing things, brought to daily dressing.

4, Switching out. I've always been a big proponent of keeping my whole wardrobe in sight in my closet, but I'm starting to lean away from that. The weather isn't as variable here as it was in Colorado, and I think I'd prefer to have my wool items, at least, protected in cedar-lined bags for the long summer. This isn't a big project for me, just washing and folding three or four sweaters. They'll still be in the main closet, just in canvas zipper bags on the shelf.

That's all for now, I think! Attaching a few WIWs from the month...and one with my hair in braids!
