While I always wear the same size, I see a difference between summer and winter fitting. But I guess that is normal. I have no kids so far so do not know what will happen then.

Per what LaP said, my feet grew a size when I was running long distances. They haven’t really decreased again, so I continue to wear a larger shoe size. My feet didn’t change size when I was pregnant.

In the past 6 months since I started running and also walking a lot more, my feet need extra volume so I’ve gone up a size when buying new shoes in some brands (that’s aside from the athletic shoes when buying up a size or two is recommended anyway.) I think there’s simply a lot more blood flow to my feet since I’m working my legs so often.

I use alpaca inserts in some of my winter boots. They insulate well and they do add some volume (like the shearling inserts, they compress over time). There are lots of sellers on Etsy if you can't find anything locally.

My feet grew during pregnancy and are shrinking a bit now that I no longer carry DS on my back (for the first four years we did a LOT of babywearing). The size change, alas, isn't enough to go up or down a size, and because it's only my forefoot wides rarely work. It just seems I always have a range of shoes, some of which fit loose, others tight, so I try to base my sock choices for the day on what shoes I want to wear, depending on how much extra space I have in my shoes. I'd say I'm consistently an EU40, it's just that some 40's work and some don't.

I've had the same thing happen as a long-distance hiker. After a month or two of backpacking, it's common for feet to go up a size, but for most people they shrink back down after the trip is over.

Thank you, L' Abeille, for your information. I have not lost weight lately so it is probably aging. I just did not expect it. There are lots of llamas and alpacas around here so I will be checking out the farmers ' markets.

I went up 1/2 size, in either length or width, with each of my 4 pregnancies. I think that is pretty common; as the ligaments relax in late pregnancy (to allow the pelvis to stretch), the arch drops and the bones spread.

When I lost weight, I was surprised to find myself walking out of my loafers. (This happened before my waist got an inch smaller...) I think that foot shrinkage with aging would be from loss of fat or muscle mass, including the padding, sadly.

My daughter found alpaca insoles for her Blundstones at the farmers market too, from a guy who raises alpacas. They are wonderfully warm and cushioning.

Run Carla, I was also wondering where you got the alpaca inserts. Thank you. Some of us may want some. Inserts are a good idea.
I am glad that I'm not alone with changing foot sizes. Laura, I have lost an inch in height but thought that was due to gravity working on the spine as well as osteporosis.

I used to wear size 9.5 narrow. I think I’ve worn size 10 for 25-30 years, and am now a medium rather than narrow. That’s probably due to weight gain, more than anything.

Vanity sizing might be part of it. I went down about a half size when I lost a lot of weight. I notice a fair bit of difference between the beginning and the end of the day, especially if I've been on my feet a lot, and in different weather conditions.

Most people shrink an inch or so in height when they get older, so it makes sense that your feet would somewhat compress in as well.

If the printed sizes haven't changed (vanity sizing), then my feet have shrunk, definitely. I used to be a 8.5/9 in trainers and an 8 in most everything else. Now, I'm a 7/8, but never larger, depending on brand and style of shoe.

Joy, I don't think I have a single pair of shoes that I don't modify with some sort of insert to enhance their comfort. I have alpaca (warm) for winter boots, gel inserts, Superfeet for arch support, etc. I actually slip an insert into new shoes I'm considering to see how well they will accept modification. You might find a cushy gel insert not only enhances comfort, but helps fill out the looser shoe for your smaller foot.

Why not try an insert, especially a warm one, for your white boots and any shoe you really love, that seems too big now?

Thank you, Angie and all. I am used to shoes fitting differently in summer and in winter but this is just strange. My feet are always cold so do not swell noticeably in summer. Yes sizing in clothing has changed a lot over the years. I wonder if shoe sizing in the industry has recently changed to accommodate more women having bigger feet. I would not think that the white booties could have stretched much already as I have barely worn them...maybe twice, then the weather called for taller, more protective boots
I really appreciate you each telling your foot change story. I need to have the wonderful SAs in Nordstrom's shoe department help. The last time I was told that I should be getting narrow widths. I seem to do best in regular width shoes that run a bit narrow. It does not help that my left foot is larger, and I suspect, wider, than the right and my arches are back a bit farther than normal. Pads on the bottom are definitely thinning as is my skin.

Yes! My feet have shrunk in the past few years. Now a half to a full size smaller. I suppose it could be because of giving up alcohol? Less swelling / lower blood pressure maybe?

Joy - I have flexible flat feet. My feet "grew" 1/2 a size after having my son. They I made the mistake of wearing ugg boots to keep my feet warm and my arch collapsed further and I developed a neuroma. I found a great podiatrist online (thetaorthotics.com) who basically does orthodontia for your feet, sequential orthotics to get the arch back in position. Because of that my feet are now 1/2 to whole size smaller. Also Angie is correct we lost fat in our feet so it can make them smaller although loosening ligaments and collapsed arches can make them longer and wider. It's individual. But I wish I knew how important arch support was a decade ago. I would have saved me a boatload of discomfort!!

I wish my feet would shrink! I was an 8 1/2 before I had kids, then went to a 9 1/2 to 10. My feet were narrow. Come my 50s and they got bigger again, now 10 1/2 to 11. My metatarsal has widened because of bunions, so while I still have narrow heels, I now wear an M instead of an N. 10 1/2 is a miserable size--many stores stocked only 1-2 pairs, now more available online. I still wear 10 in Sketcher and Vionics.

I had no idea feet change size over the years.

When I was young women's shoes came with heel widths and foot widths. I remember my Mom had size 7 with narrow heel and medium width forefoot, whatever that size was called.

So funny you mention this ,
Before I had children I was a solid 6 or 6 1/2 ..every time .
Then I went to a 7 pretty consistently.
After I retired last year and moved suddenly ALL my shoes seemed big . I would walk right out of some of my pumps.
Every new pair of shoes and boots I have bought in the last 16 months have been a 6 or 6 1/2. That is a solid size smaller.
I was baffled for a minute , but then I realized ...I have stood on my feet the better part of 40 yrs. as a stylist ....my feet were probably swollen !
So YES ... my feet have shrunk back to their original size since I retired .

My feet shrank half a size to a full size after I had my second child - so weird!

First Joy, shoe sizes are inconsistent, so there is that. Generally, footwear - (and clothing) - is larger and wider than it was 20 years ago. A size US4 20/30 years ago is a US0 today.

Second, cold weather can make your feet smaller - and conversely the heat can make them swell.

Third, your feet truly shrink when your old shoes are too big. Is that the case, do you think?

To answer your question - YES. My feet have shrunk in width and volume over the years, but not in length. Zero padding and minimal arch and instep.

For awhile my feet (after children) grew a size, but now they seem to be shrinking. Anyone else? My new white booties are a 7.5 rather than my usual 8, that is with socks. I tried on 8s at the Rack and all were too big. This was with so-show Smart Wool socks over tights. I saw some Doc Martin’s I wanted but they were too big every where. I could not lace them to even look like they fit at the ankle. Do they run large? There were no smallest ones to try.
My white booties also seemed too big today. I had to buckle them in the tightest hole and could go tighter but the studs get in the way where I would have new holes made in the strap.
