I have an electric stove/oven with a ceramic top -- easy to clean. The kind Laura refers to. However, mine is white so I fuss and really have to work hard to clean it. Get the black. It's not induction so the top gets hot but it's visibly red when it's hot. It's also not as fast as induction, but I feel it boils a pot of water faster than my boyfriend's gas range.

The best thing about my unit, which is not new anymore, it's around 10 years old -- is the down draft. Down drafts reduce odors and smoke way more than up drafts, in my opinion at least.

I grew up with an induction stovetop, have one now in the place we are renting, and I farrrrrr prefer gas! Whether it’s a top-of-the-line model like in my parents’ second home or the bargain unit we have here, they rarely hear consistently—the burner goes on and off to keep it around the set temp. The numbers don’t mean anything. Eventually you get used to them, but that’s nothing like being able to look at a flame with your own eyeball and knowing if/how much you want to change it. You can’t just cut off the heat—they stay warm and keep hearing what in the pot/pan. My non-cooking son is annoyed by the way they meep and beep if something damp or wet or warm or whatever is put on they finicky surfaces. It’s not rare for condensation to run off the bottom of a lid I’m lifting up to check on what I’m cooking, land near the controls, and the stove turns off until I get it wiped up again. It is such a pain!

I have had an induction cooktop for 14 years. The electronic control system needed to be replaced, and because it sits under the flat surface it is a bit easier to literally fry the electronics.

DD and DS are autistic. DD has long hair. I worried about a gas cooktop which at decision time was at the level of her head.

Safety is a plus for children learning to cook, butt the top still gets very hot. It cools down quickly.

I agree with everything previously said.

I love induction and cannot imagine going back to gas. If you get it, you can find griddles, woks, and pressure cookers that will work on the burners.

I have an induction cooktop which is now about 6 years old. I have no complaints although I did have to replace some cookware. I would be hard pressed to go back to gas or electric.

I have had induction for 10 years. No gas on my side of the street. As Janet mentioned I also like it much better than a regular electric glass electric top. However it can scratch if you have something like cast iron dragged across the top instead of lifted. Super easy to clean. I like the look of gas ranges, as that specific look is more my taste but I don't enjoy the clean up.

We bought an induction cooktop six months ago and love it and would not go back (in our case that was electric). As others have said, it's much easier to make small adjustments in temperature, cooking meals is much faster, and easy to clean. Our cooktop came with several pots and pans and one of existing pans worked with it. We plan on getting a larger induction cooktop in the next year.

I don't know enough about induction cooktops to be sure what the requirement is for pans. I do know, when we built our new kitchen 8 years ago, since we couldn't get gas (in our area yet), I ended up getting the old fashioned electric coil burners, and they were hard to find! Many people tried to talk me into the glass top, but when I found out I wouldn't be able to use my cast iron pans, I was out.

So that would be the deal breaker for me!

I have never had induction burners but I will say if your primary dislike of regular stoves is the cleaning, you can also get a glass-top stove that is a regular electric stove. You don't have to have the special cookware but it's just as easy to clean.

All very interesting!DH and I were discussing replacing our cooktop just the other day, as only half the burners work and it's quite narrow. I love gas, which we currently have, but he suggested induction and lots of you have convincing reasons for it.

Our house came with a Jenn-Air range including two induction burners and a grill top. So it’s now 30 years old. I was not excited about the induction thing early on. We bought new stainless steel pots and pans in order to use it.

Over the years, though, I have come to appreciate it and actually kind of prefer it now. My husband disagrees. He wants to run propane into the house when we renovate our kitchen so we can have gas burners (what we have at the ranch, which is otherwise solar-powered). I do like seeing a cooking flame, but! I hate cleaning those gas stove tops — so many nooks and crannies and it gets so greasy. Induction cooktops are so easy to clean! I like that they are not hot unless a pot is placed on them.

I am not exactly a master chef. But we are cooking a lot during this time of lockdown, and it makes me appreciate ease of cleaning a lot.

I love mine! We have a Kitchen Aid and went with the wider width. I’m a messy cook so the pieces of onion, etc. that don’t make it to the pan can basically be wiped off the burner with a flick of the finger.
Fortunately we didn’t need to buy new cookware. My Calphalon griddle didn’t work on it so it has found a new home with a friend.

I love mine so much. Very fast and sensitive. You can melt chocolate straight on the burner at the lowest settings. Mine also has a timer function where it turns the heat off at a set time, which is nice sometimes, e.g. to make rice.

Only con: We had to have our power upgraded slightly because we also have air conditioning.

Love ours, not one complaint. Yes, your cookware has to be metal that a magnet will stick to, plenty to choose from out there. Super fast to reach boiling, super fast to back down from high temps as well. Better than gas to me because of the flat, easy clean surface. If you boil over, there are no nooks and crannies to spill into. Just efficient and easy!

We have induction burners at the bakery. You can’t bang around on them, can’t hold your pan up and over the heat... so technique has to change, if you do that sort of thing. But I don’t see why not otherwise.

I do!
Pros:
Very quick to heat up
Quick cool down

Cons:
Pots boiling over (see point one above)
And, no, I still haven’t learned after 6 years:-(
I was not aware when I purchased this stove that I would need all new cook wear because I had no induction heat cook wear.

I have used it for so long now that I forget what a conventional top is like.
We had to replace the computer board on it after about 5 years which was disappointing but that was affecting the oven part not the cooktop.
