Ms. Maven...I just clicked on your posts to remember who you were. I work in supplements at a health food store. Collagen works for many, though not everyone. You also need to be really faithful about taking it daily or almost daily. I like both flavored and unflavored--not everyone knows you can throw it into cooked food like eggs or soup. I am not sure I notice a huge difference, as I use it once a week or less. But what I CAN say is that my joints are healthy for my age, and that I at least know it is something my body needs, as collagen is lost by the body as we age.

For hair skin and nails, those are things that have many components, which people don't want to acknowledge. The best supplement I know for hair is BioSil, which does produce collagen, as well as elastin and keratin. It has been shown to increase hair thickness and growth, and it's available at health food stores and online.

Other simple fixes are rosemary oil--rubbed methodically into the scalp for a minute or so several times a week to open up dying follicles. Or a great clarifying shampoo, designed to do the same.

I've been using collagen powder for about a year now. Like LJP, I stir the unfavoured stuff into my coffee in the morning. I think it has made a difference for my joints. I started with Vital Proteins but when it got too pricey I switched to Organika. No issue with taste. I have heard that marine collagens might tend more to a fishy taste.

Vital Proteins has without question helped my nails and joints, and most likely my skin. I use unflavored and I put it in my yogurt with breakfast. I buy it at Costco.

My POV is that the studies are not yet conclusive - collagen supplement may help, may not. You'll need to try for yourself. Lots of good info from Selene Yeager and Stacy Sims - google them and you'll find their evaluations.

I use nutraafol for hair and skin. I like the results. My understanding is that it's better to eat things that help your body produce its own collagen. I'd like more in my face but have a problematic overabundance in my hands.

My mum does collagen powder… Dr Kelly or something. I sorta enjoy stealing her collagen powder to add to my drinks…

I’ve used Vital Proteins collagen powder and couldn’t tell you whether it’s made a difference for me. It’s not cheap, so I’m not sure it’s worthwhile for something that’s so hard to quantify in terms of results.

Thanks for all your input. Mr Maven was in a study several years ago, and afterward they let him keep his Renpho scale, (bioelectrical impedance measurement technology.) I've been using it as well. It isn't as accurate as Dexa technology, but it gives you a good idea of body fat percentages, protein, BMI, etc. I took a good look at my record tonight, and I'm in fairly good territory on most of the measurements. My nails are pretty good, splitting at times, but not too bad. My hair has always been fine.

The studies isabel posted, together with admonitions to talk with my doctor are all good advice. I'll put the powder on the shelf for now and do more research. At this point in my life, I'm not sure how much it would help anyway.

I have used collagen powder for years . Just buy a good brand , not from China , with an ingredient list you can read - ie not full of garbage fillers. The brand I use is Vega . I mix it in w my coffee in the morning . Just bought their new liquid version to try too . Does it “ work “ ? I don’t know . Maybe my skin and hair looks better than it would if I didn’t use collagen but who really knows ?

100% if you are taking any medications don’t add anything without reviewing with your doctor and/or probably more importantly with a pharmacist who has a list of ALL you meds, not just the ones you get filled at that location.

Maven, I am a big believer in not taking anything like this without asking your doctor. There are quite a few studies if you want to read up. I read your link.

So much depends on your health and your health history. IE....my doctor wouldn't let me go anywhere near this because I've had stomach cancer. And This seems to have potential GI side effects which I wouldn't get over easily.

I think you get my drift. : )

Here are some studies..... it does appear to be "limited".

I complimented my hairdresser on her long, beautiful, great looking hair she wore down for the first time I've seen her--usually she pins it into an updo or pony tail.

"Collagen," she announced! She buys the powder at the grocery store and mixes it with almond milk. "Don't buy the unflavored!" she warned me that it tastes awful, advised the vanilla.

I came home and did some online research. It might help hair, skin and nails, and there were numerous positive testimonials, as well as a few negative ones.

I also found warnings about negative effects on some people.

Who wouldn't want healthier nails, skin, and hair? I did buy some vanilla flavored powder online, but now I'm hesitating. Maybe I'll wait a few weeks before I begin taking it.

Series of articles on benefits of collagen, many of which can be had from diet alone.
