I love the idea of simple "dress"ing, but I'm having more difficulty these days finding dresses that flatter and suit my real life. I enjoy them completely on others!

I feel much like Janet. I don't know how to shop for dresses! Plus I think of them as something I have to live up to. I don't seem to have this feeling as much with skirts and tops. Trousers are my comfort zone (when they fit, that is, and when the weather permits).

I have one wearable dress right now (see below). I planned to save it for "special" but I'm short on summer officewear so it's in the rotation. I don't look as good in it as the model does!

I would feel more this way if it was easier to find casual dresses that fit me, are flattering enough, and work for my style. Once I find the right dress, it makes it soooo much easier. But it's a slog to find dresses that work for me!

I wear lots of dresses in the summer, partially for this reason. Like others, I don't tend to wear dresses as much in the winter because they aren't as easy to accessorize for me.

In warm weather, I totally agree. Dresses and bare legs are just so easy and put together. But when the weather is colder, I have trouble with dresses catching on tights and riding up - so dresses become too much work for me.

I wear dresses a lot to work, for the reason you mentioned. It's just easy peasy. A couple of years ago I deliberately switched my attention to separates, so I can get more variety out of my wardrobe by mix and matching. Recently I was shopping with a girlfriend and I showed her a pair of pants I was considering. She said: I can't be bothered with pants or skirts because it's too much work to figure out an outfit. I just like dresses.

For me, I have to be in the mood for a dress, which puts a damper on how many times I wear one. So they're not "easy" in the sense that they aren't an FFBO. I find I stand out too much at work in a dress (I work mostly with men) and heels, and since I'm almost always at work, my dresses only get weekend use.

I wonder now if I should be looking for really low-key dresses and pairing them with oxfords to downplay their femininity...hmmm...

I do feel the same way about dresses to some extent - and live in them in summer when not at work. These are usually sack dresses

At work I'd wear dresses at least once a week, if not twice.

I am constrained by having a long torso, so even though dresses are quite flattering on my pear body type, they often don't fit me, as the waist hits too high.

Very pretty dress! I love the jewel tones and your choice of shoes.

Like others have written, dresses are much easier for me in spring, summer, and fall. I hardly wear them in winter because my legs get way too cold.

I do find I have to consider footwear pretty carefully with dresses--presumably because it's not hiding under pants!

I also agree that I feel more strongly about this in the summer months. I wear pants a lot more frequently in the winter. That said, I would rather wear a dress rather than a skirt with hosiery in winter, because I find it annoying sometimes to have two waistbands.

Una: you're right, body type does play a role! I can see that dresses aren't often a great fit with your body type, mainly because a lot of them are designed for my body type (hourglass/pear), which is a big reason why I default to them, and why I find buying pants quite difficult. I'm envious of your lean legs/thighs!

I haven't thought of dresses that way because I always need to pick a topper for the a/c. I'm in and out of the cold all day so figuring out which will be both attractive and practical is a chore. I think it's almost like picking bottoms.

I run cold especially in the cooler air of mornings, so the challenge for me with dresses is finding a topper that will work. I like tops + bottoms so I can calibrate how warm/cool I will be. Today I'm wearing a sleeveless dress since I'm going out to the suburbs where it will be in the 80s this a.m. and it will be that warm at home later this p.m. Oh, and this year I bought a 3/4 sleeve collared linen dress (summer oxymoron?) so maybe that will be the answer to my cold neck and arms.

"I wear dresses because I'm too lazy to match top and bottoms."

That was me, this morning. Tops and bottoms are so complicated. You have to get the top length right (or tuck, which is complicated), pants are often harder to fit than dresses, etc., and the top and bottom have the coordinate. Why not let the manufacturer do all the coordination for me? I was going to wear separates this morning but didn't have the brain space to figure it out...so I wore the outfit in the finds below instead.

So I frequently end up looking "fancy" even though it's out of sheer laziness
