I wonder if FP is more for the music/hollywood set of young people who will spend more than they should on those types of clothing. I do see things that appeal to me sometimes, but the pricing has always kept me away.

Whitneyelisha, good points. Apart from not liking cheap fabric myself I love the artistic vibe of Free People and back in the day, would happily have splurged on something that made me look that cool, and did. That brand speaks to a certain tribal feeling of shared experience. I no longer have a lot of those experiences, so just enjoy the vibe on the beautiful others.
How we spend money on clothes says a lot about who we think we are, just as the clothes do.
I love that a younger woman is doing so well.

This is a super old thread, but I had to comment in regards to 20 somethings not being able to afford Free People. I'm 27 with a great job and my husbands in the military. I order off of FreePeople.com at least once every week. I guess the exception may be 20 somethings with kids, unmarried or in their early 20's still in college. But nowadays, a lot of us are making good money by 25 and having kids later in life so we have a few years to live a little less worry free when it comes to money and splurge on this UNIQUE brand. You don't find clothes/shoes/bags like this at a mall or TJMaxx...

Yes, they are very pricey. But there are 20-somethings who can afford it - I see FP clothes on students on campus. Maybe it's their parents who are paying the bills...

I did notice Angie

I think the price comes down to design mostly. I will never find anything even close to this at Old Navy:

http://www.anthropologie.com/a.....plateType=

If I had the money, I would MUCH rather get something like that than a boring solid color v neck from Target...even if it lasts just one season.

YEEEEES, Maya! All items made of T-shirty type knits or fleece type knits look like schmutters in a short space of time no matter where you get them from. It’s the nature of the fabric. This is why I cannot handle having people pay high prices for this type of item. There is a diminished return after a certain price point. Know what I mean, jelly bean? Marc Jacobs T’s are selling for $80 to $150, and the fabrication is no better than Old Navy. Criminal.

The overall quality of knitwear is a little better, and I have a higher price ceiling for that type of product. But I will not buy anything designer that is knitted (or an item of knitwear) unless it is on deep markdown.

The only type of knitted fabric that I will spend a bit of money on is mesh because its very resilient. I won’t even spend money on cashmere! It will still pill. (You make have noticed that I’m passionate about fabrications).

Don't all knits look like "schmutters" (what a great word) after no time at all though? I haven't found this problem to be unique to Anthro or FP. On the flip side, I have had great success with Anthro woven tops, so if I could afford them, they would have a much more prominent place in my wardrobe.

I find myself either loving or loathing individual items on FP. Some of the stuff is just outlandish and wacky, but other items put me over the moon.

As for people my age being able to afford it or not: I am never going to pass judgment on a situation I know nothing about, but in the case of many people I whose situations I DO know, they aren't necessarily "doing well" or able to afford what they buy. They are just careless with money. Sorry if that sounds obnoxious but I have seen a lot more of that going around than I would like. I can't say anything about it because it's not my place, but sometimes I REALLY want to.

Anyway, I think FP definitely offers a very unique look so while there may be a lot of other places for rich and/or irresponsible 20somethings to shop, they are never going to get the FP look from any other brand.

I think you’re spot on, Laura. I also think that the FP hand writing changes every season. Sometimes they’re really bohemian, whereas at other times just trendy. I think what gets to me the most is that FP (like Anthro) charge a lot for knitted merchandise that ends up looking like schmutters in no time at all. I can’t handle it!

However, some seasons I adore the FP collection, whereas at other times it leaves me cold. I see a strong resemblance between the 7 for all Mankind range and FP at the moment.

I understand the appeal, but I know that that locally (Midwest) the buyers who like FP get it on sale at Urban Outfitters, where it retails, or at a discount, at TJ Maxx, which at least for a while was selling it a season old, or at resale. I've had some FP that I've sold at resale, to a consignment shop with a lot of 20something customers, and I know how desirable it is. I can sell just about anything with the Free People label on it! But this market has a lot of not-at-retail price options, and savvy buyers.

I don't shop at Free People, but I had to comment because in DC we have two stores that market to the younger (early 20something) crowd: Cusp (which is Neiman Marcus' store for younger shoppers) and Intermix. Both stores carry very high end clothing and shoes, ranging in price from $300 a piece to well over $1000. Yet every time I walk into the stores I feel that the styles are usually too young for me (I'm 32), and I see a slew of college-aged girls shopping. I always wonder how they can possibly afford the merchandise, but apparently they do! I have never been able to understand it.

I own two Free People sweaters and I generally really like their style... but I definitely agree that everything is overpriced. Although, some 20somethings *can* afford to buy expensive clothes (not me!). Many people in my age group have great jobs and are doing pretty well.

I tend to find the brand in cute small expensive boutiques. I've never been in an actual FP store!

I agree, their prices are ridiculous, and I am not sure about target demographic. It seems like it's still a mainstream store, and rich kids have plenty of other options. Maybe their volume is not very big.

You got it Laura. I feel that their pricing should be closer to Urban Outfitters (another 20s store) than to Anthropologie (which is targeting 30s and 40s). But I guess as long as rich kids exist in the world, there will be stores that cater to them.

I am obviously a huge fan of the Urban-Anthro-FP triad so I get their catalog too, but I don't think I have ever bought anything from them except a dress that went on sale (and was being sold at UO). I couldn't even keep it because it was too small (I wanted it so badly I just ordered the only size left--a 0--and prayed that it would run big). I have a few things from Anthro that were on sale, or that I got for my birthday. Other than that, UO is the most accessible of the 3 stores by FAR.

Okay, I'm hoping someone will explain this brand to me. They see fit to send me their catalog, and I love their clothes and have that knit military jacket from them, which is great. I'm not their target market. Their clothes are designed for people in their 20s. But come on, the prices are outrageous. An embellished velvet burnout "dress" (actually comes to just below the crotch) for $148? What 20something can afford that?

Clearly I just don't get it. Does anyone else?
