I've had my eyes done, but it was because the lids dropped so low that I couldn't see to drive at night anymore. I am terrified of surgery (and have had 5 big ones) but I wasn't willing to quit driving at night at the age of 48.

My eyes look much, much better now. I didn't realize how bad it had gotten. I am really happy with how they look. But I wouldn't have done it without a non-cosmetic reason. The whole process was terrifying and I couldn't go to work for 10 days. There was a very slight asymmetry in the results and that bothered me for a while. Five years later, I'm getting some buildup of scar tissue in one eyelid and I just try not to think about it. I've been told I'll have to have it again someday. Ug.

Dana, you say you've recently been more bothered by your nose. I'm not clear on this, but aren't you in Texas? Is this a move? Are there a bunch of "conventionally pretty" girls in Texas? If it weren't for the great new job, I'd suggest moving somewhere diverse! Not that I know anything about Texas. Just wondering.

If I had the money I'd love to get PS. My right nostril is bulbous, but not the left. So I'd like to fix that. Then, I'd love to fix all of the aging things, face lift etc. I don't have fear of it as I would only do this if I could afford good work. That would probably bring the total to at least $20,000. There is just no way I will ever have that kind of money again.

I have had botox in the past. I wouldn't mind doing it again, again it's a money thing.

IK I know this thread is 3 days old. And know, I haven't had PS. But I just wanted to say, my nose also makes me look more and more like my Dad as I get older. The shape of my nose (a little wide, with a squishy bulbous tip) used to make me self conscious as a child (a few WASP friends used to ask if they could "bop" my nose) and feel unpretty. In my early twenties my nose seemed to lean out a bit and get some angles which I liked. Now it's become more bulbous and also noticeably lopsided. Like Dad's.

But when I imagine surgically altering it, I am troubled by questions. If I got a new nose, what would it say? What would it declare about my heritage, my connection with my father? My respect for him and desire to pass on his lineage and legacy? What would it tell my children about that heritage? And about the validity of their own embodiment and appearances?

When I see people who've had things "fixed", I often wonder these questions about them and their families. I sometimes feel an altered face is rootless, disconnected from meaning.

I have one quite droopy lid that I will probably have done eventually if it starts to affect my vision. My dad had the droopy lids and eventually, he couldn't open his eyes. It seemed minor when he did it; out patient, little discomfort. Of course he didn't use make up to cover up, and neither would I as I never wear any makeup at all. When I have it done, I will have my Asian eyes "westernized." I know, you can be judgey with me about that but I have been self conscious about them ever since first grade when a kid pointed out to me that they were different. As I've aged, my eyes have gotten more narrow and because the one is noticably smaller, it bugs me.

Cindy, best wishes! My mom had the same kind of cancer removed from her nose, but never had cosmetic surgery to do further work -- it left a little indentation in her nose, but not too bad. I would not be surprised if I have to have the same thing done someday.

Glory, I hope you heal quickly too!

I had plastic surgery this past Friday on my cheek to remove skin cancer. I will definately have a scar but hopefully less because the plastic surgeon has done a good job - or so I hope. It looks pretty grim today. The scar will be about 1.5 inches long - hopefully it will cover well.

I will be having plastic surgery on my nose on Wednesday. Not because I want to. I quite like my nose. :)
I will be having skin cancer (nodular basal cell carcinoma) removed by my dermatologist in the morning then heading over to the plastic surgeon to have the damage repaired. I pray that the cancer hasn't gone into the cartilage. I don't want my nose shape to be effected or the scarring to be too obvious.

I have looked at a couple of your pictures and your nose seems fine to me. But I understand everyone has its own preferences and dislikes.

I have a narrow, long face with a substantial Spanish/Mediterranean nose. But I have no problem with that, would not change it. I am far more annoyed by a sagging jaw/neck that is a result of aging (I'm 47).

It is popular for girls to get plastics done as part of graduation gifts where I am - especially for medical school. Girls that go on vacation and come back with perkier boobs, or slimmer noses.

Just to second Elizabeth's comments - I think their lives have improved for the better because of it, whether it makes them more confident, or that they needed that extra little boost.

None of them play on a team of one, but I still do.

It's your nose, so do with it what you like, but...I thought you said you were happy with your face? I remember a post where you asked a question about what it's like to be "conventionally pretty". You said you were happy with your looks, but you don't consider them conventional.

For what it's worth, I've never noticed your nose. I can't quite picture what your face looks like at all -- it's been a while since I've seen a picture of you -- and all that I can remember is very dark hair and an athletic bod!

As far as nose jobs go, I don't know much about them, other than the range of results is huge. I worked with a young woman once who had had her nose done, and it definitely changed her life for the better. But what if you have it done and you don't like the results? And that's on top of the general risks of surgery.

I have drooping eyelids, so I might have to have that done if it effects my vision. My old stylist's daughter had a 10 year cosmetic surgery plan. I've had to go to a cosmetic surgeon to remove a cyst near my ear. That one, btw, left a scar, and the surgeon wanted to a "do-over." I said no way; if you didn't do it right the first time, no way I'm giving you a second shot.

I also had that hernia surgery a couple of years ago. I can still feel where they cut.

So here's my thing, having had two surgeries: 1) You risk your life, no matter what and this is not to be underplayed (my dad would have lived a long time had he not had heart surgery and just took naps; instead, he never came out of the hospital) 2) You risk it not being perfect, which esp. defeats the purpose of cosmetic surgery. 3) You are never ever the same again, IMO, and you can always feel it.

I personally reject the notion now of going under the knife for any reason other than disease. I think I have to save up on stamina for when I might really need it.

My thoughts: it is your body; do what makes you happy.
My other thoughts: I think there is a difference between minor (tightening) procedures and changing what you look like (some, but not all, nose jobs). Beware the Jennifer Gray phenomenon. Your friends and family love how you look right now (but I understand that you don't); if you go down this path, look at a ton of before and afters to make sure your surgeon will give you a look that fits you.

I haven't - but my Mom got her eyelids done. One of them was drooping to the point where it was starting to affect her vision. The results are beautiful! The procedure was done on an 'out patient' basis at the hospital - and she had to leave the bandage on for a couple of days, and then go back to have the bandage removed and have the doctor check it etc. One week of minor/mild bruising, which was easily covered with concealer makeup, and no pain.

From what I remember it was done on a Friday, so bandage over her eye over the weekend, back into the doctor's first thing Monday to remove bandage. The rest of that week she just used a specialty cover-up makeup to hide the bruising (the Cover FX brand worked well for this). For some reason, they did one eye at a time. I think the doctor wanted to see how the first one looked first or something? Not sure. So she had the "worse" eye done first, and then went back a few weeks/month later and had the other one done too.

It looks very natural and you cannot tell anything was "done", just that her eyes look much better than they did before with the drooping she was experiencing. I think she would have had it done a lot sooner had she known it wasn't going to be all that bad.

A nice SA at Shopper's Drug Mart recommended the Cover FX. It totally concealed the bruising without looking heavy or fake. I think she just hung around the house relaxing the weekend after the Friday eye procedure (with the one eye being covered with a bandage). Back to 'normal' the next week, albeit with cover up concealer until the bruising went away.

Oh how I hate my nose - too big and I have the bump. Add to that I have a thin face so it makes my nose look even larger. Add to that I wear glasses which accentuate the nose even more. Add to that I'm getting frown lines which seem to point directly to my nose. Add to that....well, you get the point, I could keep adding to that!

I went to a plastic surgeon about a year ago to see what it would cost (about $6,000) and I also wanted to get an eyelid lift ($3,000). When I went to the plastic surgeon, he asked me that since my nose bothers me so much, why didn't I have it done when I was younger? Well, hello, I didn't have $6,000 laying around when I was younger! And I'm not sure I want to spend it now at my age. After all, I've lived 53 years with this nose, maybe it adds character!

I never had too much of a problem with my profile, but I hate the bulbousness of my nose. There is plastic surgery to fix this--I think the unofficial name is nose tip surgery. They can slim it down and do stuff to the nostrils as well. I would want that too, because I have flared nostrils that are also asymmetrical. I had a free consult with a surgeon in my early thirties but have done nothing since. Maybe I'm chicken. I do hate this blobby meatball quality to my nose. And I'm sure most other people don't see it the way I do, but I think it detracts from making me look more feminine and refined.

I don't love my nose either -- it has a slight bump in it and resembles my dad's rather than my mom's, unfortunately. Between that and my not-so-taut chin, I dislike my profile.

In the abstract, I would love to have something done about my drooping jawline -- when I'm not smiling, my jowls are getting way too apparent for someone who is not even 50 yet. But I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to this stuff. I worked myself into a mild panic attack before my surgery (the first of my life) this year.

However, the surgery and recovery went well so some of my fear is allayed. I'm not sure I will ever choose an elective cosmetic procedure, but I would be more likely to now than I would have before, knowing what I do about how my body heals.

To me, it depends on how many previous necessary medical surgeries a person has had before one goes under a non-medical procedure. If I had never had a surgery before, I would do it.

No, and I have actual 'physical flaws': ptosis on one eye. I just can't be bothered (plus, I've heard it's a recurring issue and people can have the procedure done about ten times before they just suck it up and live with the fact that they have ptosis). It doesn't cause any added sight problems either.
One of my closest friends would like to have her nose 'fixed' but I don't think she should. Yes, she has a special nose, but it gives her face character! It's HER nose, and her father's, not some defect. I don't know, I have an average nose so I guess I'll never understand what's wrong with having a bigger, more prominent one. All I can say is, as long as it's not too much (and none of yours look too much to me, ladies), it gives a face personality!

I have contemplated the idea of a nose job. Mine is also big and manly for my thin face. I'm probably too much of a scaredy cat to ever do it, but the thought has crossed my mind. But boy, the leap of faith to trust someone with your face is a really really big thing.

I had a cosmetic procedure done after a problem with a botched lumpectomy when I was younger. So now I can tell people I got a boob job! HAHA.

I wouldn't be opposed to doing my nose! Fairly common, I think.

(edit: sorry if the following is not quite coherent - it's been a very long day, and I can barely see straight! I will re-read and clean this up tomorrow. Good night, ladies!)

I am of Italian descent, and I had a nose job when I was 16 years old. I got the large bumpy Roman nose - the one that added character to my grandfather and his father, and the Italian men, (and even on my brother), but completely overpowered my face. All they really did was take the bump of bone off, that was giving me an real 'eagle's beak' sort of look. Otherwise, my nose is still the same width and structure that it was before, with strong 'lines' down the sides.

The surgery wasn't bad - I went under completely, and while I was told to rest for at least a week after, with no music, I was pounding on the piano a day and a half later. I didn't have any pain, but it was super-weird when they took out the packing!

The one thing is that my nose healed slightly crooked. I may, someday, go get that fixed. But I can live with it :) I was surprised to go into the Louvre and see my nose on a Tuscan Madonna from the 5th or 6th century! The same lines down the sides of her nose. I have to say, it made me feel somehow great, because my nose isn't the sort of nose you see in film, or television, or 'pretty' art.

I have never, ever regretted having it done, it completely changed my life - at 16 years old. :)

(I do, however, feel that botox isn't a great idea, as there are no long-term (25+ years) studies of the population of people who have been injected. At this point, my vanity has not yet outweighed my willingess to take that risk)

I had my neck and lower eyelids done two years ago. Super happy with the results and would do it again in a heartbeat.

I haven't, though I wouldn't rule it out. My mom had her neck tightened and she maintains it was the best thing she ever did for herself. She didn't look different, just younger and slimmer. FWIW, though, I have never noticed your nose in photos.

I hope Bert and Ernie don't get nose jobs. They would end up like Jennifer Grey.

I have not, but my bff had her eyes done a couple years ago and is super happy with it. It was subtle - nobody guessed she had anything done, but everybody said how great, happy, relaxed, young she looked.

With the nose - do you care if people notice the transformation?

I'm saying nothing about your nose because I can't visualize it and never noticed it.

Funny story, my sil booked in for a nose job & my sister who hated her nose asked her what sort of nose she was getting. My sil said "One like yours."
