I used to use these for bedding when I lived overseas, and our closet space was very limited. That was 15-20 years ago, in a tropical climate. They worked great, although I always re-washed the bedding when I took it out of the bags, because they would get a plasticky smell.

Over time, the valve thingie had a tendency to annoyingly pop off, and when we moved back to the States and bigger closets, I donated them.

I'm guessing that the storage bags that are being manufactured now are not as reliable in quality.

Haha, old thread but I remember this.

April, I'm laughing because we somehow had accumulated a ton of pillows too. Set for guest room, sets for two futons that used to get used for guests with children, etc. And then my mom passed away and for some reason I brought home the pillows from her house... I ended up getting rid of a bunch a couple of years ago, donating them to the animal shelter for bedding.

This past winter I found our old space bags and used them for holding the bedding that came with our Airstream that we bought last summer (we replaced it with some that was more to our taste, but want to keep the original so that someday when we sell the camper the original bedding, TV, etc. will be included even though we removed them). Well, it's working OK, even though the bags have definitely not stayed as flat as they should. But for this particular usage, I'm not too annoyed -- they do the job well enough!

BTW, my space bags are holding up great. They are keeping a ton of bed pillows in a fraction of the space they used to hog.

Yes, why indeed do we have so darn many bed pillows. Well, because we combined three households into one, then endured a long stretch in which Mr. April's shoulder problems led to serial pillow auditions.

I know this is an old thread, but wanted to provide an update on the Target space bags... they work great! I just grabbed a few bags full of clothes from underbed storage after 5 months and they were completely in tact! I am going to buy more.

@Janet- yep, I had a bad experience with them too. I think mine puffed back up in less than an hour.
This was a long time ago though, maybe before I bought this house. Maybe they improved?

I think I am one of the lucky ones! I store my unused clothes in vacuum bags and, like Irina, never had a problem even with my knitwear. In my case, it's a great solution as my wardrobe is 80 cm wide! I have a bag for each season plus a dedicated bag for my holding zone and replace the clothes at the beginning of the new season.

I actually bought the Target version, in Medium and Large. So far, so good. There is a slightly different design to the part that you apply the suction to, and it seems to work well. I went into it knowing i will need to check on them frequently. Good luck!

Laura, Irene, Joyce B, and Cindysmith already told my expereinces. They work and can be great, but over time the air does leak back in. I thought they were the answer to my bedding storage problems. Turns out they are helpful for getting stuff into the trunk, but if I open it to get one piece out, I generally have to redo the bags for everything else. Some are heavier than others; I think the newer ones are thinner. I don’t think the ziplocks (=thinner) have ripped any faster than the others though.

Am I the only person who has put stuff in them and carefully followed all the instructions, only to look six months later and the bag is puffed out because air got in anyway?

I decided it’s not worth it for us. Better to find adequate storage space for things in appropriate air-tight containers and let go of excess stuff that takes up too much room.

Hate them. I live in an RV, so it would seem that I'd love them. I have had crappy luck with them, though. I don't care how much I spend on them, they always decompress because air gets in. That kind of defeats the purpose of having them, for me.

All of your comments are helpful to me -- thank you! Everything I was planning to store is woven so it seems like this may not be the solution I'm seeking.

Maybe what I'll do is take the down comforters and bed pillows out of their storage bags and use those storage bags for the fabric art pieces, while space-bagging the comforters and pillows.

Space bags used to be thicker, these days they are thin and tear more easily.
I do use them to protect items from moths, I pack them with scented soap and check for continued bag integrity every so often.

I use these bags to protect my wool sweaters and scarves from moths during warm months. Yes, it creases sweaters but I steam them after and never had a problem. I keep the bags in my spare closet and check for air leakage once in a while. What I don’t put in vacuum sealed bags - no items with details, no woven fabrics.

They work pretty well as far as reducing volume but they will leak air eventually, so I don’t know if they’d be a permanent solution. For moving or seasonal storage they’re helpful.

My husband is a little obsessed with them. Storage space is at a premium in our place, so he likes to suck the living daylights out of off season bedding, towels, etc., and stick the bags under our bed. He tried it with some of my winter sweaters last year and I've never forgiven him - the creases were permanent. In terms of keeping dust out , yes, they are great for that, but you'd have to research their website for guarantees re: mold and bugs.
