Hi Joy when I was holidaying at Waikiki beach in 2016 there were plenty of one-pieces on the middle-aged. What ( kind of) shocked me- didn't know I was still a prude until that moment- was the G-string bikinis on the gorgeous teenage girls such that you could see their entire tanned buttocks. They looked naked from the back, and I think my son's eyes ( he was 19 at the time) were probably on stalks. Thought I'd mostly got over the prudishness I learned from my mother but it would seem not

Joy- I wear a rash guard often to prevent sunburn and they are very common. Here it is about 50 50 with bikinis to one pieces.

Oh gosh, Joy, I may be exaggerating or projecting a bit! I personally felt self-conscious the one time I wore a one-piece, but YMMV. My midriff is not what it once was, but i don’t feel majorly self-conscious revealing it (whereas I always wish there were a way to cover my thighs in a swimsuit! LOL). I realize other people will have varying flattery or coverage preferences. I didn’t mean to seem so absolutist about it.

I think either a tankini or a two piece with a rash guard would be totally fine. Really it’s about what makes you feel most comfortable!

Ack! We are going to be staying on the beach in Maui soon. My midriff is full of huge deep purple bruises from insulin injections, not a sight I want anyone to have to look at. I plan to take a tankini and one piece. Would a bikini with long rash guard be more acceptable?

Thanks for all the ideas! I will start researching further.

I’m not enamoured of the idea of wearing any kind of swimsuit these days, but the truth is once I’m in the water or on the beach I kind of put that behind me. I know that I’m now an “invisible” (at least to most people) middle aged woman and I’m not going to be the hottie on the beach. Frankly, the only one really paying attention, other than me, is my husband. And he loves this suit (as do I).

Also, just making it clear that the bikini thing is only for beach vacations that take us to places where literally no one wears a one-piece. Seriously, wear a one-piece in Cabo or on a beach in Maui and you will feel far more self-conscious than in a bikini because that’s what everyone else is wearing, regardless of age or size!

We don’t even have one of those trips planned right now, but I’m planning for the future. Last time we did one of those trips, it was very last-minute, and there is no way I could have found a suit before going.

At home, for swimming laps I have a serious swimmer suit, and I have a couple of cute but covered one-pieces that are good for when we have family and friends over to swim. So that capsule is in good shape.

I appreciate all the suggestions and sentiments!

I have to echo Sal, living in a warm city with amazing beaches, we wear swim suits regularly. I am pretty sure when I am at the beach no one is looking at me, there are too many hot bods to get the attention. I am very quick at leaving the surf and getting to the safety of my towel and beach caftan.

LisaP - whilst I am OK with wearing a swim suit, I have been to Japan and the idea of being naked in the communal baths means I will never go...I know I am missing out on a cultural experience, but I would be so uncomfortable, that it just is not for me. So I do sympathise.

Janet I love your swim suit and will keep an eye out for you in the Aussie brands.

Well Lisap I may have been in my 30s when I last wore a bikini! Tried a tankini in my 40s and found the bottoms annoying somehow, elastic top of them seemed to slip down abdomen. So one-pieces it has been since 2006. I just bought one last week, my first since 2013.
It's a German brand called Sunflair. I just checked its website, Janet, there are some great bikinis there!

I actually got a bikini this last year and wore it once. I realized that the parts of my body that I most want to cover aren’t fully covered by a one piece anyway. Then I found one I liked. This was a huge change from how I felt before, though, so I understand how you feel, Lisa. I love the beach, which I grew up with, so it’s a bathing suit is a necessary evil for me anyway.

Janet - that suit is soooo good. I love the sporty/sexy vibe. It is very Bond girl. I wish I shopped for swimsuits enough to weigh in on a replacement.

lisa p - I haven't owned a bikini in many years. I am right there with you. My two-pieces have all been tankinis. The general public does not need to see that much of me. But as Angie says. never say never. Maybe we just need to find the right one.

I think living in a warmer beach oriented climate makes it easier to get used to baring your body in a swimsuit. On the beach here last weekend I saw so many different girls and women in such a variety of shapes - ages- some swimming in more covered looks - and some is very revealing. I love seeing the 80 year olds swimming and the 20 year olds posing for instagram shots - there are a lot of out takes!!

Just the right vibe.
I have a thing about belts on a suit when they hit at just the right place -- a little low - I think they visually elongate my short torso.

I'm tiptoeing in here to have a peek. I got a gift certificate to a really lovely Nordic spa for Christmas, and it requires a swimsuit . I haven't had one on in a couple of years, and am dying a little inside. Am I the only woman here who could not even conceive of wearing a two piece, never mind ANY swimsuit at all ? This makes me rather depressed. I love the kinds of bikini you showed above Janet - I think I last wore one when I was about 45. Sigh.

My first thought was looking at lingerie brands that do a good job of making bras for a larger bust, like Prima Donna, Panache, Freya... (many of them make fab swimwear these days too).
This brought me to the Bare Necessities website, and they have an awesome selection of swimwear at the moment!

I focussed on the bikini tops for this search, but if you don't like the bikini bottoms shown in the pics, there are usually more options available in the same pattern/colour.

Seafolly, Jets, Milea are all terrific Australian brands- I think Australia make the best - functional, good quality and flattering.

I have a milea bikini - it does have a bra style top but in navy self stripe fabric it feels sporty.

I share similar preferences-this year here there were lots of very very cheeky pants out- but those days are over for me. But after extensive shopping last year I realised pants with too much coverage are also not the best on me - I loved them but a traditional non string pant is the best.

I tried on a couple at Athleta last year but was not feeling them — I think maybe the fit of the bottoms was off or something. But I like the vibe. Maybe I’ll try again but I want to get a few pounds off me first. I’ll take a look at Title 9 too. I fear those “athletic” suits are cut more for athletic bodies, and mine is definitely not an athletic shape. It’s hard to find that kind of styling in a suit that fits significant curves. That “Peony” one is cute, but I’m trying to get away from the bra-style tops. I may try it anyway. If it’s cut right (and doesn’t just look like a bra with a print), I wouldn’t rule out the right bra style top.

Thanks for the recommendations, Krisch and Carla!

High waisted bottoms are not for me, even when I was at my lowest weight —
I’m too short waisted. Boy shorts are a hard no as well. I do well with a bikini with butt coverage but relatively high leg openings (saddlebags make bottom fit really hard for me — many leg openings pinch, but when I size up the butt is baggy).

I often need bra sizing in swimsuits but this style works for me I think because of the substantial band under the breasts and adequate bust coverage. The vertical lines created by the deep V style halter are really flattering on me.

I am also really picky about prints on swimsuits these days — I want sophisticated without being dowdy, and I like rich dark shades and jewel tone solids too. I know, I ask a lot!

While I can't tell you where to get it again, I recommend Ralph Lauren as their cuts seem to fit just nice and classy https://shop.swimco.com/en/bal.....i-top.html and https://intl.ralphlauren.com/w.....national_G

Last summer around the pool nieces and friends were diplaying lots of new looks that were very flattering to many shapes, involving crisscross and "wrap" bikini tops. High waist bottoms are also big, and they do look good with a 1950's vibe.

Rachy, thank you! Inge, you are the BEST. I love it too. Maybe if I can find a solution to brighten the white in the suit, I can keep it in service a while longer.

Inspired by Angie’s admonition to start swimwear searching now, I have a quest for an eventual replacement for my favorite beach vacation swimsuit. This bikini is from Rod Beattie Bleu, and it’s been my favorite for about five years now. Something about the sporty-sexy vibe really works for me. I think the stripes and sportiness somehow offset how undeniably curvy my body shape is. I also like that this style has just enough coverage for my taste without being too much or too little. And, it’s my perfect color scheme. Hubs loves this suit.

Alas, after these years of wear, it’s starting to discolor a little from sunscreen, specifically on the white portion. I found my exact suit (but many offerings were separates) on eBay, but the separates seem to be in a mishmash of sizes which are not necessarily mine.

It doesn’t seem like it would be that hard a style to find, but it is. If anyone out there sees anything similar, I’d love to know!
