quietloud--I also have learned to not overly analyze clothing, but only recently.
star--thrift shops are fun enough with one, but with two you end up with things you'd never think.
suntiger--i've had to learn the hard way to build my wardrobe to my lifestyle. living in a couple cities, you think you need all sorts of snazzy stuff, but now living in New Mexico, I just need easygoing clothes.
angie--i'm glad you also have a husband who pushes you, but that must be a big job for him, since you work in fashion already...

I like the way DH thinks, Carol! What a fab little look to add to your style :)

kkards, Rachy and Jaime, I'm smiling at you!

Probably, though not in a good way- thinking of friends in school, like the one who suggested I get a perm like her. I do try some of the ideas from YLF, with mixed results.

My big style shifts have mainly been situational- different life roles. I wanted to be a lot more formal a few years ago for work, but now that I'm coasting along til I can retire (next year God willing), I'm not trying to impress anyone

My husband often suggests things that I wouldn't have thought to try on myself. Sometimes I'm positively surprised, sometimes it doesn't work at all, but I think what he helps me with the most is pushing me to trust my instincts about clothes and not over-intellectualizing everything.

Janet--I'm glad you had that lesson with your husband, and I know others have also said this website helps them so much. I love the feature of pinning your favorite clothes from the blogs--I always save stuff that surprises me.

Barbara diane--I know what you mean about material--I am also only comfortable with certain material. That class sound fun, and like something I would like to try.

I had my colors done, and later took a class that included them picking out an outfit for you. Initially I hated it because the material triggered some bad associations, but when I let go of that I realized I looked really good.

Annabelle—sounds like a good experience. In one of my favorite books, Madame Chic, the French wear their best thing always, and it does change your perspective to use your best things.

Rachylou—I think my mental space is stirring to try white shoes.

Jaime—great story. I am admittedly in lounge wear at home a lot, but I also like to study and get excited about fashion.

I’d have to say that sometimes being here on this forum has helped me push my style. It’s influenced me to experiment (with mixed results but always an education!), and sometimes adopt approaches and styles that I formerly avoided.

My husband nudges me a bit too. He’ll encourage me to try things on even though I’m pretty sure they won’t suit me. It even happened yesterday, with a dress in a little boutique. It wasn’t successful, but it also wasn’t a fail in the way I expected, so it was a good lesson.

That dress that won you over is adorable. Terrible length for me (long legs but not good-looking ones!) but I’m happy you discovered it!

Joy—wow—you must be tiny. I always get jealous of tiny women, but I know sometimes they want to be taller, too. Such a conundrum to find clothes you wanted, for so many years.

Judy—good story. We suffer so much as children—glad you had a good outcome. I was the opposite—allowed to wear whatever I wanted, while gingerly learning the rules over time.

Roberta—sounds like a great friend to have! My friends tend to keep quiet about what I’m wearing, because I was so bohemian growing up…very definite with my clothing. I usually have to ask when I want advice.

Kkards—I still haven’t gotten a pair of white shoes, but I can see how you’d wear them all the time. I do have a decades-old pair of white Sorrel boots—jazzes up a winter outfit.

An oft told story: when my 18 yr old twins were about 2, my husband (who is actually not into clothes at all), suggested (very gently) that perhaps I should move on from sweatshirts and sweatpants. I started researching, found YLF, and here I still am!

Shopping with a girlfriend (years ago). She encouraged me to buy a vibrant blue, patterned, sleeveless knit mini dress, that brought out a fun, youthful, sexy style that flattered my body and changed how I think about clothing. I had been generally conservative in "must match things I already own," "must be wearable on the regular" "If it's nondescript, people won't notice I'm wearing the same 6 outfits in rotation" and such. I never had a party girl wardrobe, and this friend pushed me to think outside the envelope, for day-wear. Why not have "fun" and "look fabulous" as aspirations every day?

During my elementary school days my two older sisters criticized every carefully picked outfit I ever proudly wore to the breakfast table. All they would say is: “Your wearing THAT?” And refuse to tell me what was wrong with it when I asked. So since there was no pleasing them, they actually pushed me into the have-to-please-myself camp. And I grew a thick skin. And now who has more fun with fashion ?? Thx sisters !

An advisor at college who hated my brown clothes of an aunts wanted me to wear things that “did not blend into the blackboard”. When I could afford to invest in a wardrobe, I looked for brights. Everyone at collage hated my clothes. Another prof said I looked like a little brown mouse. Another reason to look for brights and things that fit. At that time my best fit was the girls’ department. That meant wearing the same thing as the girls in my class ( sixth grade). Not a good idea. So everything got altered until Junior sizing appeared.

A colleage at the library did that for me. She would occasionally bring me something of hers that didn't work on her (she was five inches shorter than me). It was often something I never would have tried - kimono jackets leap to mind - and which then looked great on me. She also introduced me to cloth (velvet, tapestry) handbags, which I had never considered. And definitely a few other things! She could also zhuszh me to improve an outfit by at least 20%, ha!

She had/has wonderful style and is definitely the friend you want to go shopping with. My style ruts are pretty deep and hard to overcome, but she definitely had an impact. And when I gave away a lot of my accessories after I retired, I knew exactly which ones she would want.

Sometimes someone does us a favor by suggesting we wear something we would never consider, and it looks great. Then maybe we add the new concept to our sense of fashion.

Has anyone ever done this for you?

While in Italy, I asked my (now-ex) husband to tell me what I would look good in. I was looking at maxi dresses--he picked something like this. It was risky for my age, but just enough. I bought it and wore it many years. Makes your legs look a mile long.
