In my part of the country the yarn shops encourage you to come in and knit or crochet at their table. They have groups or clubs to join, or invite you to bring in a project you might be having trouble with so they can help you figure it out. They love to draw people into their stores and have you become a customer/friend.
I love to knit or crochet simple mindless things. I love the feel of the yarn. I think it is much more fun and relaxing than following a complicated pattern. I have made some fairly complicated projects and the satisfaction is really great with those when they are finished though.
Maya see if there is a yarn shop in your neighborhood. With your design background this may be a great new beginning for you.

I do - somewhat. I can knit and purl, and when I'm in practice I can alternate between them, but I don't really know how to make anything other than scarves. It might be a good "unemployment project" during downtime this summer. Unfortunately, the shop nearby that sold great yarn has gone out of business, so I have to travel a bit farther for supplies.

My friend Kim (Piper) Werker has made crocheting her career. She edits a magazine called Interweave Crocheting. She's published a bunch of books too. She has an online crocheting community that seems to have lots of patterns and ideas:
http://www.crochetme.com/

It is too cute. I'm always drawn to the little crocheted animals. Useless but fun to look at!

She also cohosts a show called Knitting Daily TV on public television (but that show doesn't air in my area) and has published lots of books on crocheting.

To be honest, I don't know much about crocheting, but Kim is a great person with a lot of personality. If anyone is doing hip and young crocheting, it would be her! If you check her stuff out, let me know what you think.

I know how to knit but I neither seem to have the time for it nor the money to buy wool. Even then I start on a project and never finish it! I also know how to sew, embroider and do cross-stitch but I haven't used these skills in years. Maybe when I graduate, I'll have the time to use these skills again.

Antje, I'm also prone to lose impetus when knitting or crocheting, but only because I always inevitable get stuck somewhere and there is no one to help me! My mom knits but for her it's almost a mechanical process. It comes naturally to her. She can't understand mistakes because she never makes them! Kellygirl, your idea might help a lot with this. Thanks for the info!

You must be more skilled than me though because I don't think I'm skilled enough to make a sweater. I can barely crank out a scarf. Actually, I have never even tried following a pattern. That's why I'd rather start with crocheting. I'm much better at it.

My mom taught me to knit, but I bought this book to learn crochet. http://www.amazon.com/Crochet-.....038;sr=8-1

It doesn't really have patterns for each project, but detailed instructions for each step along with illustrations. It's SO much easier for me to learn this way. i know most books will not be like this so I'm trying to get a grip on following patterns. I just couldn't find any patterns I actually liked.

I actually just enjoy aimless knitting. It's relaxing. Actually making something is too much pressure :p

BTW, I sometimes watch Knit and Crochet Today on TV. It's on a local public television station here so check your public stations where you live. They obviously require some knowledge of knitting and crocheting though, so it wouldn't be good for someone who is a beginner or knows nothing. I recently Tivo-ed an episode with the most adorable blanket. I want to make it for my kitty. Some of the ideas are goofy but others are cute, and it's nice to actually be able to see them working.

Oh what a wonderful thread! I've been a knitter on and off throughout my life; I knitted my own sweaters as a teenager and have knitted socks and scarves for friends sometimes. I've also crocheted a little, though not as much. I love the relaxing aspect of knitting/crocheting, and I love the idea of making something unique that noone else will wear.

The timing for your question is so great, since I -being out of work- have wanted to pick up knitting again, and happened to browse through knitting magazines at B&N last week. And there was nothing I liked! The pieces were either dowdy or looked too complicated for me. After many years of not knitting at all, I don't want to start on something with super complicated patterns or button holes or something like that. I'll definitely check out some of the resources recommended here. Hip knitting, that's what I want. Keep it coming!

And then we can support each other while we work on our creations. I have to admit that I start crafty projects very enthusiastically but am prone to lose stamina midway through. I've abandoned a few knitting projects in my life... (there is a half-finished baby sweater sitting somewhere in a box in the basement, which I started for my best friend when she was pregnant with her first child -- that child is now 14... I have since planned to finish it for several other babies in my life, all of them now age 5 and up ;-)) So any peer support/pressure is welcome!

Maya, you should check out an online community called "Ravelry." It is a wonderful resource for knitters and crocheters. There is no fee to join, all you have to do is sign up. You can view patterns from almost every knitting/crochet book along with the Raveler's finished objects. I can't say enough good things about it--it may even help improve your stitchery skills!

OMG I love those Stich 'n Bitch patterns! That's exactly what I had in mind. Thanks gals.

San, is your book for knitting or crocheting? I think I am better of starting with crochet because I'm not very good at knitting yet.

Inge, what kind of stuff do they have in that Pretty in Punk book? I saw a few images on Amazon of miniskirts and hats with little mohawks on them but I can't see those ever working their way into my wardrobe. Have you gotten a chance to browse through it? You can email me or post them here. Like I said, I'm not that good at knitting yet but I'll keep a list for the future.

I did a blog (list) post on knitting books a while back:
http://plankjeongeregeld.typep.....oeken.html

There are five English language titles. I found quite a few more, if you like I can e-mail you the titles. I'm sure you could find some of them in the library.

There really are some bad patterns out there. I know a gal who is addicted to making socks in beautiful colors. Socks are a nice small project, and you can knit them both at the same time on the needle.

This is the hippest book I know:

They have a whole series of them:

http://www.amazon.com/Stitch-B.....038;sr=8-2

Maya -- I am also a poor knitter, but I did buy an inexpensive pattern on Etsy for a mesh shopping bag (think Parisian string bag) that was not difficult even for me. It seemed like the perfect project since it was practical, environmentally friendly, and could accommodate my inevitable small knitting mistakes without looking bad -- unlike, say, a sweater, or socks. I also told myself that I would make a lot of these bags and give them as gifts, which would have been a great idea except that I didn't actually do it.

Besides working and being a hermit (or I suppose as a result of being a hermit), I learned how to crochet (and knit rather poorly) with my time off. This weekend I went looking for pattern books but they were all full of horrible floor-length granny square skirts from the 70's and other very dowdy and spinsterly clothing and accessories. I even found a book on crochet swimwear with women wearing yarn bikinis!

I think I'm most likely going to end up trying to make non-clothes items like scarves, blankets, and a tea cozy (when I get enough skill) since I can't find anything else. Does anyone know any resources or have any advice for where I can get ideas and patterns for something that I might actually want to wear and use? Like crocheting and knitting for hip young people? :p
