YAY !!!!! Everyone is out. I was a bit annoyed that some news stations/internet coverage was stopped after the last miner was rescued, because there were still 6 rescuers down there. I couldn't sleep until I knew the last guy was up. So I finally got out of bed and turned on CNN and 10 minutes later, there he was, the last rescuer.

Really an incredible miracle at a time when I thought miracles no longer existed.

I am so proud that this country played such a prominent role ( did you know that NASA, among many other things, designed the Fenix ? )

And I don't even know what to say about those amazing miners and rescuers and engineers. I was particularly impressed with the shift supervisor who planned and strategized and thought to set up a "day" area and a "night " area to keep the circadian rythms going....really incredible, incredible presence of mind and ability..

Sparky, regarding the shaving kits helping them to stay sane, I completely agree !! When I was expecting my little girl, I was on permanent bed rest for 6 months. Many of those days were spent alone in my bedroom ( or watching Judge Judy and Dr. Phil ). My wonderful husband would leave everything I needed for the day on table next to my bed, including accessories !!! I would wash up, do my hair, pluck my eyebrows, put on my jewelry and often a scarf. I looked like a drag queen by the time my husband got home at night !!! But it kept me going and gave me a sense of normalcy and something to do.

Regarding the wife and mistress. The miner, apparently, left his wife quite some time ago to live with his girlfriend/mistress. And both women considered themselves married to him. Since he was married to the first in the Church, the Chilean government considered her is "wife". Eventually, they let the miner decide and he picked the woman, of course, that he has been living with.

I just happened to turn the TV onto CNN last night and they were covering it live when the first miner was pulled out - I stayed up until 2 a.m. watching them bring the miners up - I finally went to bed, but I recorded it - so that I could watch it today when I got up - I've had it on my TV all day - CNN provided aMAZing coverage of every single man being brought up. The footage (down in the mine) of the last rescuer (left by himself down there) waiting for the capsule to come back to get him was WONderful - he was also the first rescuer to go down yesterday. What an inspiring story of courage and commitment and leadership and love. I am so moved.

As it turns out, the mistress was there to greet him and not the wife, but the wife 'wishes him well'. . .
at least that's how a TV special put it tonite.

Its absolutely remarkable isn't it! I've been fairly emotional too...

When they pulled the first miner up yesterday my 4 year old and I were glued to the TV, and Miss 4 was telling her sister all about it last night when we watched the news. They have just showed the live footage of the last miner coming up now and she was clapping away.

I remember being glued to the tv in 2006 when we had 2 Aussie miners trapped underground for 2 weeks (found after 5 days) about 1km underground in Tasmania, and thinking how amazing that was... but this has affected me even more powerfully.

(Although I am a little curious to see how the man who had both a wife and a mistress waiting for him fares!!)

I watched half the night it was so emotionally. With all the bad things going on it is so wonderful to focus on something positive. I lost it when the first miner came out and the little boy starting crying. And then again when the older gentleman came out and fell on his knees and prayed. I was surprised to see how well they were all doing.

I lost it when I saw a mother hugging her much taller just-rescued miner son. I immediately thought of my 6'3", 25-year old son, who left the nest for college years ago, and I burst into tears! He lives close by, but sometimes I just long for his hug!

Yes, I've been watching too. I saw the live feed last night as they brought the first miner up. When his son burst into tears I did too. Absolutely amazing. It's such a testament to the human spirit - and to countries working together. I remember that initially they said the rescue couldn't happen until after Christmas. I'm still on pins and needles and will be until they are all up safely. I can't imagine waiting right now as a family member - so close, yet it still takes so long.

Yes, Sparky. I stayed up late last night watching it. So much emotion! I've got a live-stream video up and running on my computer.

This is the most important event in the world right now. Chile will set the WORLD standard for mine rescues. That is exciting!

MPJ ~ no, I just checked and he's not out yet.

I am working on my laptop at home with the live feed open on another window ~ every time the siren goes off, I am dropping what I'm doing (school volunteer stuff mostly) to see a miner come out.

They just sent a third rescue worker down. The bravery of someone voluntarily going all the way down boggles my mind. But now this means they have a total of 36 men to bring to the surface.

ETA: Ha ha, Isabel. I think I read that the miners got everything they asked for, including cigarettes but not alcohol, so I'm sure they got many items for grooming. Part of helping them stay sane, I imagine.

That's why I'm glued to the coverage, April. Nothing like this has ever been done before. No miner has ever survived so long underground or been rescued from so deep. It's a first in every way.

Did you know that the men survived with two days' worth of food for 17 days before rescuers above reached them via a small probe? For 17 days they had no idea if they would be found.

I am absolutely mesmerized by the rescue of the 33 miners (one is actually Bolivian). I am glued to the live feed showing the rescues as they bring each man to the surface through a tiny hole from half a mile deep into the earth, where they've been for sixty nine days.

They just brought up the fifth miner, a 19-year old boy. Unbelievably beautiful watching him come out of the rescue capsule and greet his dad.

Here's a link to the live video feed via NY Times: http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.c.....an-miners/
