Thanks for the kind words! I probably will purge the shirt in the fall when I go through my closet. It's not one of my favorites anyway and now even less so.

I have a shirt that I've held onto (even though it is faded and not really in style anymore) because I was wearing it the day that my cat Max died unexpectedly 10 years ago this month. He died in my arms and so for a long time I could imagine that I could smell him on the shirt. Now, I just wear it once in awhile when I'm puttering around the house or drawing or writing. I also always wear it on his birthday.
I have not been able to wear the dress that I wore to my father's memorial service 18 months ago - its just too fresh and hurts too much. I think that eventually I will be able to wear it again - I really love the dress. It is a DVF wrap dress and a classic - I don't think it will ever go out of style.

Oh gosh-- I do something similar. Instead of associating a outfit of item with one particularly bad day, I tend to associate items with bad or good periods of my life. I can tell you what I wore to each service at the "year of funerals" that occurred 2 years ago, but I don't hold it against the clothes. However, outfits I vividly remember wearing (even just once) on any old day during a dark part of my life while I was in a bad relationship have fallen out of favor. Ones that received any sort of comment I should have burned because they bring up everything I was feeling.

Definitely. Today I was going through my closet and came across the dress I wore when I baptized my niece. It's not something I think I will ever plan again, but I can't throw it away because I associate it with that happy occasion.

A friend ended up giving me a brand-new dress she had purchased after she wore it to her cousin's funeral (he died expectedly at a young age). We were poor students at the time and the dress was pricey, but she said she just couldn't wear it again. You are not alone in this. I'm sorry about the bad news you received.

It depends. I have absolutely no idea what I was wearing the day that my friend committed suicide 6 years ago. I had worn those clothes many times before, and while most of the details from that day remain vivid, my clothes simply had too many associations attached to them already. I also got dressed that morning without the intention of it being a sad outfit.

However, there was a memorial service of sorts at the school that night, and I remember deciding to wear gray sweats and my brand new green and pink chuck taylors. I wanted to be comfortable and didn't care what I looked like (hence the sweats), and I wanted to be happier, and thought the shoes might bring some joy to an awful day.

The shoes have since become my "happy shoes". I choose to wear them for things that I know are going to be happy (and casual and somewhat goofy, what an absurd pairing of colors!) AND for times that I know are going to be sad or tough and I want some happiness (both from the absurdity of the shoes, and any happiness that has stuck with them from the happy events). I wore them the first time I hung out with my now boyfriend of 4 years!

I think you should do whatever will make you happy about the clothes. If you'll think about the bad news every time you see them, I would donate them or sell them and do something happy with the profit!

I have my two summer-funeral dresses--I wear them to work, too, but I don't know that I'd wear them out to dinner. (My winter funeral clothes tend to be just aggregations of dark layers--stuff I wear to work all the time anyway, so those aren't as strongly associated.)

I also had a pair of lucky underwear (tried to make sure to wear them on the days of particularly difficult final exams, etc.) but then I happened to be wearing them on the day a good friend passed away. I still wear them, but they aren't my lucky undies anymore.

Sorry to hear about your bad news. I hope the news won't spoil these pieces for you, but I definitely understand your aversion.

I have the completely useless and maddening ability to recall without photos exactly what I wore on any given day, especially vacations, times I purchase something fashion related, nights where I go out, and days something significant happens. I say maddening because it is so easy to box pieces in with this type of fashion recall. I think everyone does this to some degree or another.

First off-- I'm really sorry about your bad news. Whatever was painful enough to have such strong associations had to be really hard.

But in answer to your question: absolutely. I have one dress that I think of as my funeral dress, and I can wear it for other things, but they're always somber events, never joyful ones.

I had a great LBD that I wore to my father's funeral. Never wore it again. Absolutely associate clothing with a strong situation. Why not purge them and move on? It's a cute outfit on you, but if you'll always remember the association it's not worth hanging on to.

I was wearing the outfit below when I got some bad news. From past experience I know I probably won't wear either of these pieces again for a looooong time. Anyone else associate the clothes they were wearing with good/bad events that occurred while wearing them? It's not just bad news for me, I also held onto the dress I was wearing when my husband proposed long past the time when I would ever fit into it again.
