I didn't know they were called velcro rollers, but I use them too. I usually blow dry my short hair, but sometimes don't get the lift I would like or the crown is flat. I use the rollers while my hair is warm and they work perfectly. Ulta carries them...very inexpensive and available in multiple sizes.
Way back in the day, junior high, I had a friend with very long hair that rolled her hair on empty orange juice cans with both ends cut out. They worked very well but sure looked strange.

I use velcro rollers at the end of my blowout because I just can't comfortably get those top pieces full of body without a major struggle with the round brush. It works GREAT! What I did was go on YouTube and watch tons of vids on blowouts and roller setting.

I just roll those top pieces in the velcro rollers, then give it a hot shot of air then let it cool why I do my makeup. So about ten minutes later I let it out carefully and arrange with my fingers.

Good luck!

MsMaven, thanks for sharing your experience with rollers! I've heard of rag rollers and should try to figure out how to do them. But maybe the sponge rollers are easier (?).

Joy, I know what you are talking about with the curling iron thingie. I used to have one when I was in high school—it was the same brand, in fact!

Adelfa, thanks for your input on the velcro rollers. Maybe I can find some cheap ones and do a test.

Crutcher, your hair sounds just beautiful! I wish my hair were truly curly, but alas, that is not the case. I did try rolling some sections of my bangs around my finger this morning and securing them with duckbill clips (they were a little big for the task but seemed to work OK), and my bangs did seem to fare a little better today than usual. I did have to take the curls out before my hair was dry (I had an appointment), so maybe if I wait longer I will get even better results.

I just love the idea of putting a few rollers in my hair and then letting nature do the work of drying it for me. Less effort is the name of the game here!

My stylish introduced me to a different way of curling my hair...large barrel curls rolled on your finger and secured with a pin clip...I have curly, below the shoulder hair...Of all the hot rollers, velco rollers, curling irons that I have used this is absolutely my favorite way to style my hair...I finish my wash, conditioning and just blot it dry...For success with my hair, it must be wet..not dripping but wet...Then I use an Aveda Damage Control spray...lightly over the hair...I have bangs which I comb out..After that I roll front part down all over my head...
When I am in a hurry, I have a dryer that I use...When I am just around the house, I air dry which works best...The result is a set that last curls all week...I absolutely love the way it looks and holds...
(My hair is curly and thick...)

DD uses velcro rollers on almost-dry hair to get lovely curves in her hair. I use them sometimes (she learned from me and possibly also stole my rollers). I use a combination of large and smaller ones. You could definitely use them on your length hair, I have.

Brush or comb each section before rolling. To remove, unroll just a little way and then gently pull straight out. You shouldn't have any tangling. Good luck!

I could have written MsMaven's reply. I sometimes use large round Velcro rollers but I like best to use what is lick a large round brush curling iron to finish smoothing and turning the ends under, plus giving body. I bought mine at a Beauty Brands for about $39. The brand is Helen of Troy and it comes in 1"and 1.5" sizes at my nearest store. Target has something similar but it is about $100. It is the fastest way for me to finish my hair after it dries.

I have fine straight hair and I occasionally use velcro rollers--and I always take some with me when I travel. I have a little plastic box ready to toss into the suitcase. It doesn't weigh much.

When I was a kid my Mom "put up" all of our--my sisters and mine--hair on rag curlers. Somehow she made lovely ringlets for us, at least part of the time. Eventually I graduated to foam curlers, then,at some point, learned how to make pin curls, and in the era of pouty hairdos, I had brush rollers. I slept on them every night. Even with home permanents we had to use curlers to straighten the frizz.

Then came the heated curlers and the steam heated curlers, followed by long hair with ends turned under with curling irons. Even in the 60s when we all grew our hair long I used those heated curlers.

Now my hair has gotten thinner and drier. I'm in the process of growing it out to whatever the natural color is and am trying to avoid blow drying. One of my sisters still gets a perm. Another has grown her hair long and wears it in a bun. For me, I use rollers, but if I want my hair to be perfect, I blow dry with a variety of brushes and then, if I have time, stick in a roller to hold a wave.

If I try to let my hair dry naturally, the ends stick out all over and it looks unkempt. I'm still waiting for the perfect hair body/hair wave invention.

Oh, and Gigi--I get the rollers at the drugstore.

Thanks, both! Kerry, I imagine they have velcro rollers at Target (?). And E, my hair is exactly like yours: baby fine and slippery. It's tough, isn't it? I did see some sponge rollers at Kmart the other day and was wondering how they would work. That was actually what gave me the idea to post on the forum. I will have to give them a try too! I'm excited to have some new tools up my sleeve.

I will say, E, that I always thought that my hair was straight, but when I quit washing it so much I found out that it was actually wavy!

Yes I have very fine hair! Super slippery too, the kind described as 'baby fine.' The sponge curler holds for me, but be sure to use a bigger sponge roller than the curl size you want, because as you wrap your hair around the sponge, the sponge gets compressed a bit, so your curl will be smaller.

(I've spent most of my life wishing I had wavy/curly hair, so I've learned several no heat style methods over the years. hehe)

Gigi, my Velcro rollers are just cylinders with Velcro on the outside, super light and come in many sizes. I use huge ones because I only want volume and "finished" ends and my hair is longish.

Kerry, how funny that you have rollers in your hair right now! LOL. Are velcro rollers the ones that are like long plastic rectangles with velcro on them, and the plastic has "hinges" in it so that you can roll the rectangle up into a curl?

E, I think I know what you mean about 2D and 3D. The 2D curl would look like a circle viewed from above my head (looking down like a bird's-eye view), but it would be flat when viewed from the front. And the 3D curl would sit perched atop my head as viewed from the front. I'll have to try that! Do you have fine hair? I think you mentioned what kind of hair you have in my other thread on makeup and hair, but I can't remember what you said. I'm wondering if the sponge curlers will hold fine hair well.

I use hair rollers to make my hair curly (I prefer the sponge kind w plastic that clips into place) since air-drying overnight on rollers/in pin curls is the only way my straight hair will hold a curl. If I brush out the curls, they end up doing the wavy, extra body thing. But I use fairly small ones; I haven't tried using the big ones just for volume vs curls as well.

If it's just for your bangs, and you just want some wave, what about just doing a pin curl w bobby pins until it dries? Make the curl bigger, so it's not tight, and if you want you can bobby pin it at the base so the curl stands up 3-d style (does that make sense? vs pinning the curl itself to your scalp, like a 2-d curl), which gives it more volume at the root.

I'm sitting here with Velcro rollers in my hair right now! I've used other kinds of rollers in the past but like the Velcro ones best for my hair type and the results. My hair is fine and heavy so the rollers give my hair body and a finished look that is better than styling with a blow dryer. The issue with Velcro rollers is you need to start with dry hair first. If I have time, like tonight, I let it air dry first. If it's morning I rough dry my hair with a blow dryer, put in the rollers and then do the rest of my getting ready. 20 minutes is usually sufficient to get results for me.

In my quest to look like I spent hours on my hair when in fact I just let it air-dry in the lovely Minnesota weather (hee hee), I have wondered if maybe using a few strategically placed hair rollers while my hair dries would help create some body.

I have very fine hair that has a little wave (it's type 2a for those of you who follow Curly Girl). My main issue is my bangs, which I am growing out. My hair's wave doesn't really show itself except at the ends of my hair (it looks pretty straight where it comes out of my scalp), so my bangs, being some of the shorter hair on my head, generally look straight. I'm growing them out to see if that will help them hold some wave (right now they're about to the bottom of my nose), but that may or may not work. And of course I may just decide I'm tired of dealing with hair in my face all the time and CHOP THEM OFF.

So, back to my original question: Does anyone use hair rollers when air-drying their hair to create body? I have midlength hair, about chin length, in case that matters. (I think some of the new velcro rollers and such need to be used on longer hair.)
