I just noticed this thread. Rooibos was my favorite non-caffeinated beverage for quite a while (Madagascar Vanilla by Celestial Seasonings). My new favorite is Roastaroma by Celestial Seasonings. It is a little more savory in flavor, with chicory that Star mentions contributing to the taste. It may fall into the flavored-tea category that you don't like, though.

I love tea but also cannot handle caffeine later. Recently I have discovered chicory. It's caffeine free and has a slight sedative effect so best to have at night if you not going out. I have not drunk coffee for more than 20 years. Chicory is a little more like coffee than tea in taste but I am enjoying it. It speeds the metabolism naturally too.

Seconding Barry's tea! Nothing better. Yorkshire is pretty good too; their decaf is easier to get for me and it's my regular. Except for one full caf in the morning, I drink the decaf all day long!

Thanks everyone! I'm making progress.

I decided Angie's Twinnings would be first up as it was easily found at my grocery store. They didn't have Lady Grey but I did buy Earl Grey Decaf and English Breakfast Decaf. Both are better than other decafs I've tried so I'm definitely making progress. Of the two I prefer the English Breakfast so that is reinforcing that I mostly want just tea, and not extra flavor.

Next up might be UmmLila's Palais des Thes to try some herbal blends. (If you see this, I've sent you a message with some questions!). It's mostly next to try because I see a gift box with 6 different kinds, makes it easy to do more testing.

I am drinking an amazing herbal/green tea blend this morning for my headache. Advil took care of half of it, the tea the rest. These are power herbs that work on multiple levels. Tastes good, too. But the green tea inside is caffeinated. First pic--Detox

You might like any herbal tea that is more bracing, without caffeine. Like sage, or dandelion.

Finally, NOW brand came out recently with a tea line--I have their Green Kick, much better than most green tea. Here is their decaf green tea. Also, for every two boxes bought, they donate a box to food projects.

Thanks ladies! I will check out the brands mentioned above. I think I can even get some of them in grocery stores so I'll start there. Barry's is new to me but Twinnings is ringing bells.

Angie, Teapot!! That's funny.

And it's nice to know of you other Teapots here. For me it's been Matcha in the mornings for the past 5 years. I even start thinking about it the night before! Mine are from Kettl but I've also heard good things about Tezumi. Haven't tried that company yet. I definitely can match the coffee culture attitude but with Matcha.

Augusta, I'm not a big fan of chamomile so I don't think that's what I'm looking for. But thanks.

Last year I decided to give herbal teas a try again, mostly for the same reason - something hot in the evening and no caffeine. But also because I am lazy and tea bags are fast. Because I can't stand sweetened tea most blends are out. Don't remember all, but peppermint is ok, rose hips will do, but I found the best for me is chamomile, and more readily available.

I buy Healtheries, Red Seal and Pukka. I like Twinings for English tea -and Dilmah. Not sure how many of these are available in the US though.

My current favourite is three Ginger with ginger, galangal and turmeric. I also like pomegranate.

I don't prefer Stevia or agave either, Peri. I prefer the taste of white sugar or Splenda.

TEA IS LFE!!! Right after hubs and doggies I cannot function without tea!!! I am very, very fussy about the taste of it, and how it's served. The US does not have a tea culture. It's a coffee culture. I miss pukka tea culture!!! Although we have tea culture at home because hubs is as much of a teapot as I am. That helps!

I don't enjoy herbal tea or rooibos. I drink caffeinated tea 95% of the time. I drink Hong Kong Tea, Sri Lankan Tea, and South African Tea, (Some British teas too). I buy all these teas online because I can't get what I want in stores. Or I drink Jasmine, green, oolong and darjeeling when I'm in the mood for that type of Asian tea. That I can get in stores! We have brilliant Asian grocery stores - and restaurants - in Seattle.

To answer your question: I DO drink caffeine-free tea every night. It's Twinnings - Lady Grey and Earl Grey. Maybe you'll enjoy that too. Cheers!

Nodding with LJP -- the David's teas are super sweet. Not for me, although I do still occasionally like their Saigon Chai and their Moroccan Mint (a mix of green and mint).

There is a very fancy local tea company called Westholme whose teas I really like, but they are a splurge for sure.

I admit I have not tried their decaf teas. And it looks like those are currently sold out. But I really like all their other teas (black and herbal) that I have tried.

The other company I use is Silk Road Teas. Their West Coast Peppermint is an excellent herbal tea -- just peppermint.. But it looks like you can't order now from the US. ;(

And then there is Murchie's. Traditional English style teas, mostly. They do some decaf options -- quite a few, in fact. These are less artisanal, more standard, I guess I'd say? But decent. I like

David's teas are very sweet - and when they first appeared here I bought a lot from them, but don't anymore. Your instincts are correct to avoid them if you want a pure, unadulterated tea.

I'm asking for recommendations for excellent decaf tea. That may be an oxymoron.

I mostly drink Matcha and I'm a snob about it. I order from Kettl. I like really good green tea also. The problem I'm trying to solve is that I'm usually wanting a hot drink in the late afternoon or evening and can't do caffeine then. I used to have an okay decaf black tea but it's been discontinued. Since then I've only found really bad ones. Must be something in the decaf process that ruins the taste.

I'm drinking Rooibos lately but I've grown tired of it. I dislike flavored tea like Republic of Tea offers...ex Ginger Peach Decaf or Vanilla Rooibos. I don't mind true herbal teas if I could find one I like...David's Teas sound interesting until I read the ingredients and they put Stevia in almost everything, major yuck!

So, any recommendations for either plain decaf tea that is actually good or for an herbal blend without extra flavorings or stevia added?
