Trekkie -- welcome to YLF and let us know if there is any way we can help you define your style!

I haven't really thought through my goals yet, although how to stay stylish as I age (turning 57 -- eek -- in 2015) will be on the list. As well as having a sensible wardrobe for for my lifestyle.

This is really an inspiring topic for me. I can't believe it took me so long to realize, but I finally did - how I feel in something impacts me just as much if not more than how it looks. So one of my foremost goals (especially with what I feel are drastic size and shape fluctuations due to endometriosis complications) is to only wear things that are comfortable.

Another goal is to continue on the path to finding and maintaining my true style self. For a long time I wore almost exclusively hand me downs and/or thrifted items. I would keep and wear things I didn't necessarily like just to have clothes. In the last couple years I've been fortunate enough to be able to start building my wardrobe as I would like it to be, and while that is a blessing, I'm also finding I'm not sure what my true style is or should be!

This is an excellent question. I have embraced the capsule formula. It makes everything in my wardrobe easer. Easy makes me happy.

I worked on my lounging/sleepwear capsule in 2014 and am quite happy with it. I decided for 2015 to work on my workout capsule. My workout capsule is much smaller and should be easier, but finding bottoms that don't "smile" at the crotch has been a challenge. I may end up trying lots of different brands in different sizes this coming year. I hope to find them earlier in the year rather than later.

Laura, I love your list. My goals are similar to yours, especially 1 and 2: trim/optimize wardrobe; and strive for better grooming everyday (not sure if I can be perfect tho!).
So thank you for the inspiring links in your first item.

As for grooming, maybe my goal is to be just a little less accommodated in my ways--to get out of my ruts. It's not that I'm lazy, but I'm usually so busy and tired that my outfits and appearance sometimes take a seat back (or many). Some days I realize I've left the house without even looking in the mirror!

And after reading replies here, I super appreciate the idea of planning purchases from both a budget and wardrobe/outfit point of view, so I'll adopt that goal too.

I am still sorting through my goals for 2015; however, they will include:

learn how to adapt my DC sensibilities (traditional & conservative) to my new Texas environs (DFW is bright & blingy)

transition a more traditional DC office wardrobe to a casual, work-from-home wardrobe

figure out how to dress for the Texas heat while remaining cool (temperature-wise) and still looking like me

Continue streamlining, simplifying, developing authentic signature style.

Continue wearing a column of color.

Buying only items I feel great in, and being very picky about them. Experiment with lighter colors and accessories.

Also, lightening up and incorporating more playfulness!

Thank you, everyone, for putting your replies - I am having so much fun reading this! There is a lot of inspiration and food for thought!

I am thinking now that I am going to play with a budget and/or an items calendar. I see where Mette and Mo have both planned out their purchases, and it sounds strangely like a fun strategy game. (Mette, I am so excited to see you're on this forum! I am a big fan of your blog!)

Elly, you said something so perfect: "Spend less time shopping and more enjoying wearing my clothes." Me too!

Suz, I am actually laughing as I type out this next part....Let me give you some perspective from outside of your own head: I think I speak for many of us, when I say you are the absolute epitome of what having a "refined signature style" looks like :D

I have enjoyed reading everyone's resolutions -- thanks, LBD for starting this!

On Laura's thread I said that I thought mine would have to do with developing a signature style. And on Windchime's thread about purchasing, I said my purchases would be focused on: 1. Replacement basics (e.g. undies, gear) only as needed; 2. footwear (because it's key to a great and current look and because I wear through mine pretty quickly); 3. a few key statement items per season.

So...putting these together, I want to say that I resolve in 2015 to focus my purchasing in those ways, with the underlying goal of refining my signature style.

Ok, I've given this more thought and feel the need to document - thanks again LaBelle for creating this thread!

1. As mentioned, start judging outfits by how I feel first and foremost. This ties into Ornella's great point about: "prefer feeling 100% me at the cost of appearing uninteresting". CPC (casual polished classic) will be my 'style north star' so to speak.

2. Start buying only 8+ items ... I've got plenty of stuff and don't need any more. I notice that there are a lot of "meh" items in my closet and I don't think I need to add any more! To qualify as an 8, I must EITHER really need it, or really love it - preferably it will deliver both, making it a 9 or a 10.

3. Try more of Angie's ensembles - seems like a good rut-prevention strategy.

4. Try more neutral-mixing. I think this may be a way for me to up my style in a comfortable, easy way.

5. Pretty much everything in Ornella's post.

We need some sort of reminder tool to keep us on these!!! :D

I resolve to post more pictures! I cannot get feedback unless I do, so I am going to strive to post at least one outfit photo a week. I know that isn't many, but it will be a huge improvement from what I've done previously. Because I received a new phone with an incredible camera in it over the holidays, it ought to be easier than ever to do.

I also resolve to shop my own closet and, before the end of 2015, to go through every single item I have and decide whether I really need to keep it or not. I don't strive for a small wardrobe, but mine could be much better curated than what it is now.

One of my bigger goals is to spend less on clothes and more on jewelry. Nothing makes me as happy as jewelry, so it makes no sense to continue to invest in clothing (that I may or may not wear) or impractical shoes (I am notorious for this). And I have more than enough handbags to last a lifetime!

I think my main resolution is to go through my large wardrobe and see what I really love and what I can live without....

Second to that, would be to really look at Spring/Summer and build a better wardrobe in that area..A few pointed toe flats are in order here as well.

And lastly I'd like to find 2 LBD's one for warmer temps and one for cooler seasons...

I really need to get my recent weight gain under control and get to my desired weight before purging... so hoping to have that done with next 3 months...Just in time to pack up Winter and take out Spring things...

I've got my shiny new fashion mission statement (thanks, Staysfit!), about building a wardrobe so I can then get on with other things that are also important.
Beyond that, I want to:

Stick to my budget

Start collecting antique jewelry. I've always wanted to do this, and yet I've never really given myself permission. So this year, I've allocated a starter amount that might get me a small, modest piece like a locket. I decided to do this because I could spend the same money on clothes and not have them in a few years, but if I forgo something, I could spend that on something that I can keep and hand down.

Feel like me, but a more stylish me!

Be considered in what I buy and not buy more than I can actually wear. There are, after all, only 365 days in a year.

I didn't make actual resolutions. I did make a fall/winter 2015 shopping list but I think that's different. I think my style mission statement which I have been working on comes closest. That would be an overall way of thinking, and then I would set small measurable short term goals as I go.

Thanks for starting this. It will be really helpful for reflection throughout the year.

2014 was a year of fun and experimentation, with a lot of
overspending, time sucking returns, and the successes and failures to
match. In 2015 I want to focus on having a wardrobe that works for my lifestyle, fits, and brings me joy. My resolutions feel very functional, but I love thinking about 2015 as the year of wardrobe happiness, and will set that as an overarching theme.

Buy less and wear more (Thanks KL – I had a paragraph written to express this, but you summed it up perfectly). Only bring home/keep things that have a high happiness factor

Make an effort to do more brick and mortar shopping when I do plan to buy, to minimize the number of cycles required to get it right.

Prioritize alterations and repairs to get the most out of what I have

Identify a set of essentials needed for each season, and make sure I have these in my current size ready to wear at the start of the season

Navigate the fine line between shopping for my
fantasy life and being covered for irregular events (interviews, weddings,
funerals, dates, parties, etc.).

Get bold enough to post my first WIW, to give back to this community from which I have gained so much. To those of you who put yourselves out there regularly and share your style, thank you for your gift.

I want to pay more attention to my casual wardrobe and to "gear" (two separate categories, in my mind.) I've been focusing heavily on finding items for work and my professional life. I work a lot, so it makes sense that the work wardrobe has been the first priority. I wasn't allowed to wear jeans until high school, and my mom always dressed nice, even at home, and I never really got a sense for the value of looking fab and casual at the same time. It would be good for me to buy a few tops, for instance, that are only appropriate for casual wear. Right now, almost all the shirts and sweaters I wear "casually" can also be worn to work.

Well, not really a resolution - but I'm leaning more towards trying black footwear again - and maybe a black and tan bag or even an all black bag! I know, I know, with blonde hair it can be overpowering, etc. But I've tired of searching for the perfect "bookend" light color shoes with poor results. I don't love cognac shoes or accessories on myself that much. And the denim blue and deep red sandals I tried for variety didn't get much love in my closet. Plus, my ivory and taupe colored bags keep getting blue on them from jeans. Ugh! I don't like fussy anything.

So maybe I just want to simplify the bag/shoes for at least some of the warm season. Just like many in cold climates tire of black in winter, I tire of white/tan overload in spring/summer.

This spring/summer I'm sure I will continue to wear my white UGG slip ons (in both white/tan and the striped versions) and my tan sandals and pewter ones from previous seasons, but black sandals might be "new" again for me.

I think.

Pretty much what Gaylene said. I feel pretty good about where my style is now, so I'm resolving to only wear what I really love, and to only add to my closet what I really love and will wear. I'm getting more real about what gets worn and how much.

I'm in a shop less mode right now, and I intend to continue. I'm pulling back the shopping budget this year, as we're planning some lifestyle changes in coming years. I feel like I've had my indulgences the last few years, and I'm not exactly going on a shopping ban, but for the first time in my life, I'm keeping a running tab of what I spend (and what I sell, since I'm selling some of my nicer unworn items on eBay -- I gotta say, it's nice to see that total of what sold in the last two months and how it offsets any future purchase).

I have a few things I need to either alter or somehow figure out how to style, or they need to leave my wardrobe. I'm not enjoying seeing things that frustrate or confound me when I open my closet door.

It might sound a little against the grain, when so many people here are concentrating on stepping up their game a bit for the new year, but I actually want to coast a bit. I'm enjoying the fact that I can throw together a pretty good outfit in just a few minutes because my closet is playing nicely right now. I updated my eyeglasses last year, and I sold a few handbags to make room for new, updated ones that reflect my current tastes better. I have also been slowly doing the same with footwear (just shipped out two sold pairs of boots that no longer make me happy, but they're making someone else's day!). I'm satisfied with my hairstyle, for the most part, because my hairstylist and I tweak the color and cut every time I visit. My beauty and makeup routine never change much, and it works for me. I've been polishing my nails more lately, which is a little extra kick that doesn't take too much time and is fun.

So my big "resolution" for 2015 is contentment and balance. :-)

Good luck to all of you on your resolutions, and happy new year!

The replies here are wonderful! I see the overarching theme here is 'joy'.

I think 2015 will be The Year of Happiness.

To clarify... When I track wears, it isn't CPW or how often I wear an item. I note what activity I did that day, if my outfit had a 'vibe' or theme, I rate how I felt on a scale of 1-10 and I jot down every piece of the outfit, down to the socks or tights, and the color of my nail polish if I tried that. If I think of variants that would improve the outfit, such as different shoes or topper, I note that as well.

This has been so useful on the days I am stumped. I can find a similar activity in a similar season and repeat the outfit, and feel good about it.

my no. 1 NO impulse buys no matter haw great a deal it seems to be.

No. 2. keep receipts and tags on all purchases,,try on several times, and take a photo before deciding to keep or return..

these are my biggest mistakes, as I get something I love and then it just doesn't fit or feel great but I end up being stuck with it.

For 2015 I am going to try to :
1.Add a Statement Jacket for Fall and Spring - maybe some use in summer.
2. Focus on footwear - no black - add one pair of shoes and two sandals. Unknown what to do about sneakers or steel toed wear.
3. Focus on the bottom half : Add two or three pairs of comfortable, good looking pants - unknown what these are.. am thinking slight flares or boot cut. Also to add two pairs of printed capris.
4. Start wearing more of my closet- understand WHY I am not wearing certain things... and what I would need to bring them back. I think pants are going to do alot here but not sure... there may be a couple of Goodwill bags.
5. Find a bright yellow long cardi... waterfall or ?? to wear with two dresses.
6. Try adding necklaces... not sure how.. I have a couple of Dollar store items but not sure whether to go short or long.
7. Post a WIW once a month. This will mean closing a gaping leap in my current technology OR getting my 14 year old to do it and transfer it over.
8. Look at the whole outfit rather than pieces.
9. Find a pink long cami to wear with a specific printed waterfall - to get use of it
10. Try to eliminate some closet duplication- like why do I have 7 pink dresses and 9 black and white prints dresses.
11. Try to find one doable copy cat a month.
12. Try to add a scarf to wardrobe - not just for keeping the snow out of my mouth but to actually wear normally.

I'm basically with Gaylene. Why wear what I don't like or that doesn't feel comfortable in (style wise)? I think I've culled all that which isn't "me" from my closet, so whatever I do from here on out will be a new direction.

Hmm, resolutions I think are:

Be more mindful about what really does or doesn't feel comfortable.

Look after my nails more and to keep well groomed (a bit like your resolution)

To keep on sewing more of my own clothes instead of settling for less comfy bought ones.

I like your grooming resolution! I've actually already been working at that the past few months, so I will continue to do so in 2015 and make it an official resolution.

I also really want to figure out how to style my hair well. I've been growing it out, and some days it's just nasty. It requires a lot of trial and error to find the right products and right styling methods, especially in the winter, when the air is super dry and sucks every drop of moisture from my hair...

For clothing, I want to buy fewer pieces but only things that are really important to me, like items that really make me feel awesome or else a quality item that I know will be a workhorse and work with lots of outfits.

Thanks for starting this thread! Happy New Year!

I love what both Shevia and Thimblelina wrote -- T's is so simple yet really encompasses everything, and Shevia has the foresight to focus on that beautiful statement made by Ornella. YLF is full of inspiration.

Overall, for 2015 I'd like to learn how to live "in the now" with clothing. Shopping for the life I'm living right now, with constraints of my lifestyle and budget, and purchasing only what I need and can wear NOW. I want to buy items evaluate them, wear them, love them, and be able to get my return cycle figured out to where I can shop a piece or outfit at a time without having to shop all season long. I'm still figuring out how to shop without the luxury of B&M options nearby or expedited shipping.

Spend at least part of one day shopping B&M in 2015.

Continue to regularly clean my closet and evaluate whether or not pieces are working for me.

Post WIWs.

Continue to experiment with accessories, trends, shapes, colors, etc.

Have a week's worth of serviceable clothing for all seasons.

Continue to have fun with fashion within the context of who I am.

Spend less time shopping and more enjoying wearing my clothes.

It is 2015 already here. I guess you party goers are just getting going. Today is a regular work day and I went to bed at my regular early :-). Anyway, my goal for this year is to start posting WIWs again regulary. I still regularly buy and sell clothes as a hobby, but I want to use what I will call the Ornella test to decide what stays in my closet:
The moment I saw it I knew I could easily spend the whole winter wearing mostly it, it’s both basic and interesting enough...It made most of other clothing I was seeing around me unexciting, and pushed me to shift more pieces from my own wardrobe to donation pile, thus liberating me.
