Yay! I think either of those dresses would be fab And yes, it should be fun. I mean, there are speeches and so on (kind of like a graduation), but the pomp and ceremony are so cool and so out-of-the-ordinary for my daily life, at least, that it left a lasting impression on me!

Now excuse me while I go try and figure out how this hippie girl got to be the expert on all things military...

I think the blue dress and a topper would be great as well.

Hm, Debora, a jacket is a good suggestion, especially with the weather. I will have to see how my jackets work with the dresses... so far I've only tried a knit blazer, and I know the draping might fight with some necklines.

Claire, I don't think anyone would mistake me for true military! Much too flabby and contrary, lol.

Yes a ladylike dress is totally perfect. Love the blue one. As long as you don't wear anything so military inspired that you look like you're impersonating an officer, you should be good! Enjoy it and have fun; happy birthday!

Rae, a dressy day dress will be perfectly appropriate for this type of event! I second Nancylee, nothing too sexy or skin-baring. Most likely there will be a reception after the ceremony and possibly a receiving line.

"Uniform of the day" pertains to the military attendees. It is whatever uniform that the base commander has designated for wear on that particular day. Military personnel have a whole range of uniforms, from utilitarian (fatigues, flight suits) to service uniforms to mess dress (military tuxedos for very formal events). "Civilian Informal" pertains to the dress code for the civilians attending.

Hope this helps!

ETA: we posted at the same time! The Anthro dresses look good to me. I might consider adding a jacket. Do you know whether it will be an indoor or outdoor ceremony?

Have fun!

Daytime wedding... cool, that's not so bad! Maybe one of my draped Anthro dresses? They have high necks and low hemlines. Not with the boots, of course.

MaryK, you make it sound like a really fun event! I do love a good brass band.

I'd definitely wear a dress, Rae....but nothing too sexy since most of the crowd will probably be conservatively dressed.

Men wear suits, ladies wear dresses. Honestly, the dress code is kind of like a daytime wedding! LOL

You are going to have a blast. I went to a Change of Command once at Pearl Harbor, of all places (I was staying with a friend whose dad was a Navy captain) and it was awesome. Much pomp and circumstance and an actual brass band.

Oh, and the military personnel will be in their uniforms for sure!

DH and I are going to a Change of Command ceremony for our good friend in a couple weeks. It also happens to fall on my birthday, so I wanted to dress up a little. But I noticed on the invitation, in one corner, it reads:

Uniform of the day
Civilian Informal

I can't suss out if this means the military people wear the "uniform of the day" and civilians dress "informal" or if "civilian informal" is a code that means the military people don't have to wear their uniforms that day. I looked up the term, and civilian informal seems to mean a business suit... however, nothing I read said anything about who the dress code applies to.

Any insight? I'd prefer to not wear a suit on my birthday, but I also will not purposefully break the rules for this event.
